I like how Egypt had pretty much just figured out what gunpowder was, while your leaving the planet on giant space ship. Imagine the stories those soldiers told to there families when they got home.

Science victory with one city. Bunch of nerds gathered around the fire one day 4000 years B.C. and decided that they will dedicate their lives to leave their planet on which other nations war upon each other. :D Kinda interesting.

If the strat hinges on you getting the Great Library, the Oracle, the Hanging Gardens AND the Terracotta Army, it's a terrible strat. I guess he played this on a very low difficulty. On Immortal or Deity, the AI will have those wonders before you have their techs (except for the Oracle, that one is usually doable if you focus it alone)

This wouldn't work normally. I mean you start with capitol next to a Mountain (Hubble plus observatory, and tons of jungle which gives you ton of science, and with the coast a good enough defense early game (early and mid only). So You basicly had the best possible start for your strategy and you won't always be that lucky. Also, the diffuclty was low, and so the IA wasn't much a threat, but even though walls of Babylon would secure you until artillery, after that it's just game over. with 2 artillery and a parachutiste or even just a trirem you'd be dead in 3 turns. Sorry for the poor grammar.
@WallMarx
@WallMarx 10 жыл бұрын
Plus a lot of ppl would try to get your capitol with all the wonders built in. And the diffuclty must have been pretty low since the barbarians didn't pillage shit, and that's what they usually do.

Playing just one city is a handicap for science victory (probably for any other victory too), even for Babylon and Korea. An couple of extra cities will contribute more science than their 10% increase in beaker costs, plus they can send food caravans back to your capital, or production caravans while you're building the first few space ship parts (you'll rush the last part with gold or a great engineer) If one city makes for an interesting game, though, go for it; there's nothing wrong with that. My earliest science victory since I've been keeping track was in 1918 (don't remember how many turns) at Emperor level as Poland with about 4 or 5 cities. I'm trying to get one before 1900 A.D. Might have to move up to Immortal or Deity for that (the AI's get tech bonuses, so that pulls you along too until you eventually surpass them)

Personally I enjoy Japan, their units fight just as well when heavily damaged which can get you out of situations and their Samurai unique unit replaces longswordsmen and are very powerful for the 1st-2nd quarter of the game. Use them well and you are set up for the final half of the game with a strong chance for the win.

Songhai is really good too, you get 3x the gold for killing barbarian camps. I would also say that if you go for domination victory, ally yourself with as many city-states as possible, especially the militaristic ones. Go for the patronage perks, this also helps with songhai because you can take out barbarian camps for city-states while also gaining a ton of gold.

I did it! I won!!! Took me 6167 years, and a late war with the Inca, and heart pounding toe to toe with Darius at the end, but I got it! My very first Science Victory. Very satisfying, indeed. Much much more so than any Diplomatic victory. Ya know, XCOM squads and giant death robots are pretty cool. So are donated units and volunteer foreign legion armies.

I've been working on this strategy past couple days, on level 3(?) just to test it out. It's going pretty well, mostly. I am on an Amazon map, so there are jungles everywhere, which helps science greatly. I have kept my army very basic, only for academies defense. Basically just 3 units: two warriors and a scout. Most barbarians just decided to go away once they saw there was nothing to pillage (I only did two tile improvements besides the academies). I made sure to upgrade my units as I went along because with science being so high, I was consistently 2-3 eras ahead of everyone else so I had superior military units. I just recently defeated a Danish war with two infantry, an artillery, and the city. I did end up having to found a new city late game in order to get a tile of aluminum so I could build the spaceship parts. That's what I am still working on. Problem with the jungle map is that there is virtually zero production tiles. I am having to make production internally with buildings like workshop, windmill, watermill, etc. I don't have any hills to mine. So, production has been slow, which is likely why I am in late years. Idk how it is in god's and kings and vanilla, but in bnw I am having to backtrack technologies when I get to certain points that won't go any farther, so that takes time as well. I can't just go straight through to most things. Snd once I got to modern era, the techs started taking significantly more turns, as opposed to just 1-4 prior to that. Definitely having like 9 academies and jungle tiles helps a TON. But again, the production issue..... Jungle is a tradeoff; science or production. I'm lucky I haven't had to build my army, and mostly depending on upgrades. Saves time and money. I know I'll have to buckle down and build/buy a few more soon, but that's ok. Nobody gives a rap about taking over my civ because I keep to myself, I don't expand, and there's hardly any resources or improvements. I don't even have any trade routes to be plundered. So, I'm enjoying this science experiment.

Engineers cannot start a golden age, Artists can though. Plus wonders like the Taj Mahal also give you a "culture per turn" score which helps every turn thereafter. I could have spawned an Artist instead as you say and this would have given me two golden ages but the capital would have been busy building this in the meantime, quick building it allowed me to get on with other construction work to add further perks. it is always a balancing act with what you need for your civ.

Number 1 thing, until I'd say industrial era, plop down any great scientist you get on a good tile as an academy and make sure you work the tile. Second, Don't go for the ancient era wonders if it is 2 human players. Research Pottery, then writing, plop the academy down, get a library made, and then try and get the national college up asap. Soon you will be an era ahead of him in no time to get the wonders he cannot even get to. I don't recommend getting great library, it encourages bad play

That's probably why I'm more of a fan of the total war games. I really like the concept of the Civilization games, but I find it boring and anticlimactic when you can win with science/culture instead of having to form alliances, conquer, and still have the need for science and culture to obtain advanced units, have the gold to sustain your army and buy free ones, get access to naval warfare, and so on. That's just my opinion.

Randombanana That's the point of difficulty levels. You increase it to give AIs a bonus, Deity is not easy. You can also play multiplayer.
@coolhunter3
@coolhunter3 9 жыл бұрын
Chaossdruid I'd rather play solo or with friends then play multiplayer vs people that take long to take their turns, too much downtime. As for difficulty, i usually play om Emperor, the thing that makes it boring to me is not the difficulty but the predictability of the AI. Yes, i could increase the difficulty to immortal/deity but other then changing your tactic abit and minmaxing more the game still is the same. Religion feels not worth it to invest in, wish their was a victory condition for that. Diplomacy is terrible since you know even before the game start how it will all play out. For instance if you go science: At some point early on if you focus science you will 90% sure get attacked by your neighbour, after defending till he wants peace you just spam science till late game where they will either all love you or hate you. So yea basically i think every game feels the same and that's what kills it for me. I don't often go for domination victory because if i wanted to play that i'd play total war wich has far superior combat.

why no ToA? It is super good for late game, as it provides a boost to TOTAL food produced by a city, not just the EXCESS food. It can end up giving more food later on than the hanging gardens in EVERY CITY (not that that difference matters here). Very few things give a percentage boost to TOTAL food yield rather than EXCESS food yield.

Wow, this is silly and very wrongly played. Not only did you waste the free tech by not using it for Philosophy and starting NC as soon as GL is done, you also build Colossus and Terracota which are pretty much useless. And then you waste social policies on Liberty even though if you don't policy save even, it's better to invest in Patronage and scout out CSs, they will give you bonus science when allied. Also, the bonuses from the Freedom tree would greatly outweigh anything you picked instead, and would have saves a lot of earlier hammers. Also it would have boosted the output of your academies by a LOT. Not to mention finishing Rationalism so you can faith buy great scientists which you can use to bulb your way to more distant spaceship parts

+Felipe Frota gandhi only becomes an asshole once he gets nukes. He'd actually be a great neighbour for this game if you could get friendly with him early on as he's the most loyal AI. Nukes wouldn't be a problem either as you could probably grab the victory before he could use them anyway.

+DagarCoh I learned that recently when I played as a money based mod Civ and challenged myself to not found another city. I got really far in tech ahead of the other civs since its on warlord difficulty and forced them to stop taking cities over by razing all of their cities. Fun times.

Heheh, I had a similar game with Greece, but my goal was to create a city state alliance and act as a power broker on world stage. I put down about 4 academies and 5 workshops, so I was a production powerhouse, churning units every turn. I surpassed every other civ in military power and technology. Also you missed a lot of science by not allying yourself with as many city states as you can. I had something like +700 science with half the number of your academies.

Not sure if this is single city challenge or not. Science is population based. I think unless your trying to prove something you'd never make it with one city on any difficulty above emporer. Try building a few cities on the coast. You can bum rush your first coastal city and build cargo ships for an extra 7 food per turn per ship at the beginning of the game and an extra 15 food per turn per ship towards the end (more with iron curtain social policy.)

Oh really? If you choose a small map where the AI cannot get more than 3 or 4 cities without oblitering others, maybe. MAYBE. Competing against 5 or 6 naturals? I doubt it. Only if the map gives you not only a economic but also a very strong strategic advantage.
@Griexxt

Is having only one city the best strategy? Wouldn't it be better to have 2-3? I'm so desperate b/c my friends always crush me in civ. They're always leading by at least 100 points in science and I fall behind technologically really fast. Sigh...

Getting cities out is more important than science early game - Late game you will overtake them if you have more cities because you produce more science
@TheEpicSamuel

It's a really really bad strategy, definitely against players or higher level ai. He won a science victory by the year 1989, which is honestly really slow. Looking at the ai tech by that year, he was also playing on warlord, maybe prince at best. If you want to win against your friends, go tradition and try to crank out your 3 settlers once you hit pop 3 or 4 and get your luxuries online to stay happy. That way you should have you 4 cities by turn 50 (on quick speed). Tech wise you should get all the techs you need to get your luxuries online and then you go writing and philosphy to get your libraries and national college. You should have the national college by turn 60-80 and then you can start teching up. A decent player should definitely be able to win a science victory before the 1900's start this way.

How did he win? Every time I followed this I just get rolled over by other civilizations. I am usually ahead of the guy in the video (getting the great library at turn 25) even with a bad start I got the great library at turn 30. So here I am, doing so well with this build until BOOM war declared and I get rolled over.

Note that he is on jungle tiles to get those science squeezed out from and its the big thing of it you never destroy those jungle tiles and you use it to your own advantage, you can keep getting a lot of gold with combos based on your location and surroundings and while you dont have anything to build you can build barracks up to arsenal keep some gold on yourself as if war comes around, you can do good peace treaties and never allow embassies because they can see your capital, and more to your non existent army.

There comes a point where you need more cities... I had 1 city producing 350 science/turn then I killed a civ (the celts), not long later I was getting 1000 science/turn. Also it is good and all to rush techs but the science bonus from them along with full freedom it would give 20 science each (with the buffs it's more like 70). 1 academy put my 700 science/turn into 770 per turn. Sorry if I made any grammar/spelling errors, I am in a big rush.

I mean I don't think it'd be much of a problem if anyone declares war on yyou because you're so much ahead in tech i once had 2 helicopters when they just had musketmans at that point you just roll on them when they attack you. Also if you rush kremlin and other wonders that boost your defense it gets so damn hard as you're dishing out huge damage and basically kill unit with just city attack only problem is pillaging academy. Have some units man, Science victory is fun because you are so much ahead that domination victory is also so easy.
