Civilization V Leader | Pocatello of the Shoshone

Chief Pocatello, leader of the Bannock-Shoshone tribe, spent his life attempting to find some means of coexistence with the white settlers encroaching on the Shoshone territory throughout the 19th century. As many Native American leaders did, Pocatello struggled to come to terms with the influx of whites. On the one hand, he sought to co-exist with them; on the other, he was determined to protect his people's rights and freedom. Despite being fearless and cunning, in the end all Pocatello could do was bow to the inevitable, leading his surviving people onto a reservation. Although unsuccessful in his efforts to keep his people free to roam their tribal homeland, he is greatly respected by the Shoshone for preserving their cultural heritage. His legacy is reflected in the number of geographic and man-made (not the least of which is Pocatello, Idaho) features named for him - ironically, mostly by whites.

The Shoshone or Shoshoni are an indigenous people of the Great Basin with three large divisions: - Eastern Shoshone, Wyoming, northern Colorado and Montana - Northern Shoshone, eastern Idaho, western Wyoming, and northeastern Utah - Western Shoshone, Oregon, Idaho, Utah. They traditionally speak the Shoshoni language, part of the Numic languages branch of the large Uto-Aztecan language family. The Shoshone were sometimes called the Snake Indians by neighboring tribes and early European-Americans.

His name was Buffalo Robe and called Pocatello by the Whites. He led the Shoshone-Bannock not Bannock-Shoshone. He was a Shoshone Indian from the Huukenduka Band. There are more than one Chief Pocatello's as the name Pocatello is the last name much like the "Jones." Interesting program.
