I think Indonesia is probably the most versatile civ in the game. You look at their abilities straight forward but there is really no best way to use them, and the obvious way is only a way. Yeah you can go religion and her abilities help you, but you can also completely ignore religion and her faith helps you to instead save production on a navy. Don't want a navy? Don't sweat it. Expand inland instead, use your +2 faith from your coastal capital just for the quick guarantee of whatever pantheon you want before anyone else grabs them to convert that bonus into whatever you want. Still want faith? Get Earth Goddess, boom, you are now a continental faith super power. Spam cities and districts along a coast? Get the patronage pantheon and never stop building cities with basically free districts. Or make a housing religion and make only a few super tall cities with the housing and amenities from your other abilities. No matter what you decide to do you can leverage your abilities to give you a significant advantage to it. It's not all just faith and water. In fact I only go faith and water with them as a last resort if there is too much competition for land and I don't want to fight for it. Instead I'll just rush exploration and settle islands. Often though my capital is the only coastal city, I'm using faith to buy a free navy from it, while I use a perfectly manicured religion to make the most use out of the inland territory I've expanded on to get one of the other victories.

I love Indonesia. I do generally tend to like coast, coastal cities, and coastal civs (including the somewhat underrated Norway), and Indonesia is probably the best civ in the game for that, as they can get so much more out of water tiles than other civs. Other civs did get a relative boost in the last patch compared to Indonesia, when Reefs and the Fishery improvement were introduced, but Gitarja is still the queen. Consider the simplest possible coast tile with a Kampung adjacent to a single Fishing Boats in the early game, in a city in which you have built a Harbor and a Lighthouse. The yields for this tile is: 3 food, 1 production, 1 gold, 1 housing That is already a very good workable tile. By the end of the game, when the relevant techs unlock additional yields and you have built a Seaport, it will give you: 3 food, 2 production, 3 gold, 2 housing, 1 tourism If you are lucky enough to have Auckland: 3 food, 4 production, 3 gold, 2 housing, 1 tourism You will certainly have some tiles adjacent to 2 fishing boats: 4 food, 4 production, 3 gold, 2 housing, 2 tourism Weirdly, Indonesia is excellent at settling polar regions. There will usually be some snow tiles where you can place your districts, which will often get decent adjacencies from coast, while the surrounding seas will provide you with all the food, production, gold and housing you need.
@zester0003 жыл бұрын
Never underestimate the Kampung, or any improvement that provides tourism. They practically guarantee a culture victory as ling as you have open space and enough builders. Plus, the Kampung takes advantage of tiles you wouldn’t otherwise have a use for. That plus Gitarja’s faith from coastal cities to spend on Naturalists and Rock Bands (or buildings, if you pick up Jesuit Education) actually make Indonesia a pretty decent culture civ.

you forgot to mention that the Jong is unlocked with the Mercineries civic, and not the Square Rigging tech. the civic is at the end of the Classical era and the tech is at the end of the Renaissance era, so you do get them earlier. I've got to say though, I really like these videos and keep it up!

if I had to buff Indonesia, I would change the adjacency from Coasts to be: Districts get minor (+1/2) adjacency bonuses from Coasts and standard adjacency from having 3 adjacent Coasts (+1) so a Theatre Square would get +1 Culture at 2, 4 and 6 Coasts and +1 at 3 and 6. also let's be honest part of why we play Gitarja is because of the looks.

I played a domination game as Indonesia recently and that was a lot of fun. Every other city I conquered contributed to my faith production (I made holy sites a priority), which contributed to my navy, which contributed to me taking more cities. Near the end of the game, in the late industrial/early modern era, I could literally buy a battleship every two turns if I wanted to (though at that point, my navy was so large it just wasn't worth adding more). That bonus to amenities when the entertainment complex is next to a lake or on the coast is also pretty helpful with the constantly expanding empire.

Great video. Indonesia is my favorite civ. Even though I don't like the religion game, its nice to get an early pantheon to boost me up in the early game while i'm building my archipelago. I think you should've given her a B for culture though since I can get about four Kampungs in each city and bring in an extra fifty tourism or so. I wish they could have a second unique unit with a Kris sword that could pair up with the Jong somehow for easy city conquest by sea. Also I think the Kampungs are cute.
@PhoenixStriker15 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: On the true start earth map Indonesia spawns on a four tile island and is stuck there until the naval techs let them leave. So if you wanna play an earth map best to keep true start off or choose a different civ.

unique improvements don't have to be worked to provide tourism. You can spam the hell out of these to get more tourism. I got a fairly fast cultural victory with them. Certainly not in the league of Greece, Australia (which is actually my 2nd fastest), Russia, Kongo, and America. But they aren't bad. But they can be limited by available tiles to put theater squares on. I still might bump them up to a B though because Kampung's can be spammed for tourism.

I do think that the ability to buy naval units with faith is neat, but the +2 bonus to faith from coastal and lake cities doesn't impress me all that much. Say you have ten cities, over a 100 turn period you'll get 1000 faith. That's something, but it's not a game-changing quantity.

Could you do a video on how to counter Knights on higher difficulties? Since I moved up to Immortal from Emperor most of the time a Knight rush from the AI is what beats me. I can usually get out a couple of crossbowmen, but Knights 2 shot crossbowmen. If the AI sends 6-7 Knights at me it is game over.
@TheSaxyGamer6 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I'll do a whole video on that, but I will likely do a tips video on defending yourself. The best thing to do to counter and invasion is to first make sure that you have walls in every city. Then, make sure that you have a crossbowman (or whatever your ranged unit is at the time) in each city as well. I wouldn't recommend having crossbowmen outside of cities, because knights will kill them very fast as you said. For knights in particular, build anti-cavalry units once you've got a ranged unit in each city (spearmen, pikeman, pike and shot), as they get bonuses against mounted units like knights. Try to keep them clumped together, as they will then get a support bonus for each adjacent friendly unit when they are being attacked. Hopefully that should make things a little bit easier!
