The Gauls (Carnyx Theme; Phrase from 'La Brabançonne') 0:00 - Ancient Era 3:18 - Medieval Era 7:20 - Industrial Era 12:02 - Atomic Era About this Piece: Unfortunately, not much is known about the musical culture of the Gauls, but a prominent feature of all Celtic music was the Carnyx, a brass instrument that saw use in warfare, most likely as a means to rally troops and intimidate enemies. Usually, the end of the Carnyx would be fashioned into an animal's head, most likely a boar, but other animals were depicted as well. Interestingly enough, Gallic musical traditions may have been brought into the Greek/Byzantine empires, and Charlemagne was even mentioned to have commissioned a series of Gallic songs, which have not been found as of yet. However, even though the music of the Gauls has long been lost to time, the Belgians fondly remember them and Ambiorix as national heroes, hence the musical reference to the Belgian anthem, "La Brabançonne". You can hear it most clearly between 13:43 to 13:56, which references the chorus of the anthem "Le roi, la loi, la liberté! / Voor Vorst, voor Vrijheid en voor Recht! / Gesetz und König und die Freiheit hoch!" (Sources: Wikipedia and Pablo R. Sepúlveda's comment on Peaches Lamb's Gaul Atomic Theme video)

Gaulish nation was not destroyed nor romanized. Actually Gallic Civilization suffered greatly during IV-I century B.C. when migrations from Germanic people actually destroyed most of their kingdoms in Central Europe. When Caesar started his war, Gauls in modern day France had suffered greatly from Cimbrian invasion, Edui vs Arverni-Sequani civil war and Ariovistus invasion. Roman conquest actually stabilized a border between Gallic-Germans Civilization that lasted for 500 years and permitted it to survived. Actually Gauls survived and became more wealthier during the Pax Romana. Their religion survive with some gods that entered in Roman Pantheon. They lost only their druids and most of the savage ritual as human sacrifice.

Please not: This Ambiorix is inspired by the statue in Belgium. And this statue is an imitation of Hellenistic Art that show the Galatians, the Celtic Tribes that invaded Greece and Anatolia, in traditional greek sculture (muscular naked body). Gallìc people really did not went naked. Celtic people invented chainmail and the original "roman helmet". A chief or a king as Ambiorix would never come to war with upper body naked but with chainmail, maybe an armour if really wealth and with an helmet.
