1:14 I asked John Carmack what caused the wobble effect common in id Tech 2 games. He told me it was because the vertices were quantized to a 0-255 integer value instead of a decimal point. It had nothing to do with the models not having a skeleton. Besides, a rigid object like a weapon model wouldn't need animation bones in the first place. Edit: I tweeted him again to confirm. Turns out not having bones did contribute to the deformation. If the rigs had a skeleton, there'd still be deformation, but it would be uniform instead of changing every frame. Weird.

@burningmopedattheroadside19985 жыл бұрын
The main thing that makes it weird is that it's 3 dimensional frame based animation, like hand drawn animation, where the vertices are interpolated towards the next frame, yeah that's going to give some odd results. At lower resolutions and lower framerates it's not as noticeable, Quake 1 with the software renderer running at 320x240 worked fine, Kingpin in 1024x768 is a gibbering nightmare.
@gozinta825 жыл бұрын
I was about to reply to you and tell you that actually, YES, it does. The bone structures link the verts to the skeleton so they don't move unless you want them to. W/O having bones, you would have to move the vertices or the groups (if they even had those back then), That would mean that each vert would have to be moved on same axis and use the same gizmo, which would cause issues with movement, scale and rotation. What john is referring to, is how the engine takes the information in. I.E. in say, 3dstudio max, you may rotate an object using degrees. But in some games, it may be programmed to radians. Which is not the same. Not all game companies convert their models/verts/etc properly so issues also arise from that as well.

There's a certain logic to it. You put your very best level up front, and then you drop down a gear for the second level, and start ramping yourself back up from there. One of the rules of thumb that started to form with game design was design your first level last. Why? All your mechanics are done, you've become fluent in the art of level design, you know how things go together. So you can make that shit absolutely aces.

Strange back in 1998 this game had excellent reviews from some game magazines . Some of them even said it was an unique FPS game with new methods as for the graphics yeah there was much better in 1998 . Sin has a Deus Ex feeling and also is somewhat the debut of modern FPS games with boring cutscenes cinematics such as those from Call of Duty Modern Warfare, etc... As for the character we play is very stereotypical from all the action heroes in movies in the 90's such as Wesley Snipes, Jean-Claude Vandamme, Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas,... also some one liners are taken from some action movies and b-movies . Also Sin game was a free game you got when buying a new computer from Packard Bell back in the 90's such memories owning a Pentium 1 with 166mhz with a 4mb video card .

Anyway games using that technique of cinematics today are totaly out of place and not more interesting . I'm not watching a darn movie i'm "playing a game" not some blabla nonsense . And the chopper is there to take you to the bank that's being robbed. Well, the chopper does take some damage during the shootout, but here's the thing. It either lands or at least drops you off... and then returns for repairs. WITHOUT CRASHING. A _chopper,_ right, in a video game... that doesn't crash! =D I suppose Deus Ex also did it once or twice, depending on how a certain event goes. Truly, these games were incomparable in their depiction of helicopters not made up entirely of cardboard and gasoline.

I'd get it if there were only checkpoints, forcing you to ride the tram every time, but that isn't the case. Also, if you want to get past the tram ride faster, there's a console command that'll speed your game up considerably. Played the demo of this back when it was released and full game 15 years later and i liked it. Was surprised when the title said old and crap. Glad that in the end your conclusion is that the game actually is good, so it is weird you put that title. Also the ending was funny, kind of something you could expect of Duke nukem.

Im probably in the minority here but LOVED SiN over HL. Not to say I dislike HL, but even given SiN's flaws, of which there are many, I felt more invested in it. Even now all these years later I have a windows 98 PC dedicated to SiN that I still replay it on from time to time.

man this game felt so fresh. playing the demo when it released felt special...this and Kingpin really pushed the FPS to new levels...not that it always worked out well but risks were being taken and it felt good to play them at the time.

Yeah it took the quake formula to new grounds without breaking it. They added enough realism to make the gameplay deaper but avoided to add all the annoying things that could be super annying... Sure the game has some crappy sections, but I loved what the game had and the fact there is interesting ways to go from a level to an other because sometimes we don't go through the exact same levels.

Sin was awesome for the multiplayer. Weapons were crazy and really fun to use! Even with Quake 2 and Half life around we grinded so many hours on Sin

wait so (old and crap) is referring to the video itself and not the game? i thought (old and crap) was a series where you reviewed stuff that was old and crap but sin isn't crap so it must be a tag you put on the video at a later date right?

I could play this game only for the Quake 2 engine nostalgia. That's how much I love Quake 2.

The irony here is: Half-Life was also made on a modified Quake engine, but they added skeletal animation and other insane features. But well, not everyone starts a game studio with a million bucks on their account...

Finally finished it 20 years after release and it was good. Now time to play Wages of Sin, never tried that one. One thing about armor and body parts system - enemies drops their armors from time to time and its condition depends on the body parts shot by the player. If you go for the headshots all the time then forget about helmets, they will never drop. That's why shotgun is great but you won't get armor parts from gibs...

Ohh, no wonder why I was getting so much leg armor when I played it :P

Wages of Sin I found even better, it was a really impressive expansion, and I played for the first time in 2018, so it aged well too. (right after that I played Deus Ex and System Shock 2 for the very first time. Let's just say it was a memorable month) Speaking of expansions, I never really liked Quake, but damn Scourge of Armagon breathes new life into that fucking game, yes it does.

Can easily recommend this via the SiN: Gold release, although there's an upcoming Reloaded release. Also, where's Wages of Sin in this video? That is the real sequel, eve if it's an expansion pack.

"Circling around the oilrig sniping security" Hold up, Ritual Entertainment made this? HA, I knew that sounded familiar. They also made an expansion pack to Novalogic's 2004 "Delta Force - Black Hawk Down" dubbed "Team Sabre". One of the missions have the same premise; circle around an oilrig and snipe out security before getting on.

I have no earthly idea why, but SiN's shotgun sound was...euphoric. I'd love to be able to download it somewhere. Good times.

if you own the game I think there is some unpackers to get access to the sound within the files unless it's available directly from the game files.
