Hey everyone! I was sick with a massive headache and couldn’t film this week. So I decided to share a great conversation that was recorded with on my community. What you are watching is a community chat where I unpack a core program. Hope you enjoy!

You spelled it out perfectly. It’s why children are failing and teachers are quitting.

You’re right! Districts forget that core programs are not there to explicitly share best teaching practices… they just package the resources. If only schools would allow teachers to make adjustments to the core programs we’d be much better off!

I couldn’t agree more! I teach first grade and CKLA is our core curriculum. There are things that I love about CKLA but it lacks teacher creativity and the writing is very minimal. Luckily, writing is my favorite thing to teach- I implement writing into my daily lessons. However, most teachers will not add anything besides what is written in the manual. CKLA doesn’t teach writing. It lacks modeling, etc. Also, the pacing is very intense… especially when teaching the knowledge component. Thank you for shedding light, Bridge! 🥰🥰

Couldn’t agree more! I teach 1st as well and it’s my 2nd year so I am struggling to not be married to the curriculum if you will.

This was our first year with this program. It also does not have decoding in 3 grade and beyond. No systematic phonics or writing at all.

I am in the boat of working in a heavy Title 1 district. We struggle with interest, engagement and keeping rigor. My students need ALL of the scaffolds in the world to be successful. They shut down because the curriculum is too hard.

I wish my district thought of the curriculum like this. We use Benchmark Advance (the Florida version) and our district says we have to use it to fidelity, we cannot add anything to it. They got to the point where they tell us exactly what lesson to teach on what day, what to use from Benchmark, etc. It’s infuriating when you know your own students and their needs, but you cannot supplement with anything else.

I am so sorry to hear that you are having to teach this way. I can only imagine how hard this might be for you and your students. It’s a shame that the ones in charge of creating and enforcing curriculum cannot see what these core programs are doing to our kids. Shame on them.

Hi Bridget! I attended your live training with Michelle a few years ago and teach in Middletown Pa...currently teaching first grade with the knowledge part of CKLA. I have adapted it A LOT with my own slides and added writing journals for many domains to make it more beneficial for my students. My students love CKLA time! If you ever want to come in and see a lesson, let me know. I'd love to welcome you into my classroom!

I appreciate you thoughts on this program. My district adopted it two years ago, I struggle greatly with the writing, I not think it produces authentic writing. I am planning on changing how I utilize the program next year.

I desperately need something like this for HMH Into Reading (especially if you did Florida specifically). Similar to another comment here, our district makes us use with fidelity and we can only supplement with iReady. Except they don’t even break it apart in any way, just “Here’s the TE, now go teach!” I have used HMH for all of my 3 years teaching reading so far and still feel so lost as a 3rd grade reading teacher. 😔

We also use this as our elementary core program but use it more as social studies/nonfiction source. We use 95% as our main curriculum and read trade books and various decodables for actual reading practice.

I think they think that by that grade level all students are able to read at or above grade level. From k-3 the teacher is supposed to read it aloud.

I would love to see wonders I have struggled so much with the fact that they say everything is there to teach but when I have spoke to some of their representatives about there not being direct instruction of skills they can’t respond with anything.

I'm sorry this is a late comment. I've been listening to and watching some of your recent videos about comprehension and then noticed this video. My district is adopting CKLA for next year, so this was very interesting to listen to, thank you. I'd love to see a video about MTSS and explain various examples for what differentiated tier 1 instruction might include and then maybe even the difference between tier 1 and tier 2 realistically. This is where my head is at lately. I want to improve my instruction to better meet the needs of my students while still using the core program and curriculum of course, but I get overwhelmed thinking of all of the possible "solutions".

This video confirms my frustrations. We are in the process of adopting a new reading curriculum for the upcoming school year and we are already being told to teach it with fidelity and integrity. We are not allowed to supplement anything, even if we know for a fact it would work better for our students. We are expected to teach it as it is and fill in the gaps during small group time. I understand the importance of giving a program a chance, but if you know ahead of time that it’s not going to work for your class….why not make some changes?

As I was reading this… my heart hurt for you 😢 I know the struggles that you and so many teachers are dealing with and it’s sad to hear that schools are doing this. There has to be a better way and it’s going to take people becoming aware of the imperfections and how to make adjustments to make learning realistic for our kids. Let me know if I can help you with anything!
