I got to speak with Johnny Mann just before he died & told him I went to work for WSVP & WNHC just to play his Drake jingles on those stations. He liked that!

CKLW boomed into Boston at night when I was there from 69-72 like a local station. My understanding is that they used the full spectrum of their AM frequency on their old transmitter. The station never faded! I can barely get CKLW in New York today. I really loved this Drake station.

CKLW came in clear as a bell in the NYC area at night. We had OR-FM in NY but there was only one Big 8!

GREAT post!!! Still looking for the "CKLW---Motor City Rock!" I've got on an old Dave Shaffer aircheck from '72. How about the Super Tymp/BANG/Giant Tymp they used to use TOH.."CKLW---All Hits, All the Time!" Wish there were some more logging tapes floating around out there other than the ones from June and New Years Eve '73---great hearing hours of the Big 8 unscoped from the time period!

Heard one sounder on there that was same as one that WTVN 610 in Columbus Ohio used for the intro to their local newscasts in the late seventies maybe even early eighties

They had a great signal at night, but also a fabulous signal in the daytime. They got all over the midwest. You can hear them as far away as cleveland. In some cases, they got local ratings in cities like Cleveland and toledo.

Not only did they get ratings in the Cleveland area, they were on the top of their ratings at the time!

I grew up in Toledo - CKLW had a super strong signal any time of the day, on even the crappiest basic car AM radio.

CkLW was one of the best rock stations from the 60s to the mid 80s along with 1430 CKFH and 1050 CHUM. All are now talk radio. I really dont want to hear all talk. Such a shame !
