Having relocated to Detroit in 1973, from San Francisco, CKLW simply blew all the competition out of the water! KSAN and KOIT in the Bay Area were pale, mild, and tame in comparison! I'm sure it was due in no small part, to Rosalie Trombley, a major driving force in the Midwest's Rock leadership!

Windsor Canada's CKLW was one those mega stations that broadcasted all over the midweast USA. It was legendary and was the coolest station in the Motown area. Ironically it was sacrificed for Canadian content regulations that paved the way for dozens of Canadian artists we never would have heard.

The CANADIAN ACADEMY OF RECORDING ARTS AND SCIENCES (CARAS) will honor longtime CKLW-A/WINDSOR-DETROIT MD ROSALIE TROMBLEY with its 2016 WALT GREALIS Special Achievement Award at the 2016 JUNO AWARDS in CALGARY on APRIL 2nd. "I am deeply moved and humbled by this tremendous honor, as the recipient of this year's WALT GREALIS Special Achievement Award. The BIG 8 was a powerful force in broadcasting, with a signal that reached millions of listeners," said TROMBLEY, who worked at CKLW in 1968-1984 and is considered one of the most influential music directors of the era and a champion of Canadian music. "I will always consider myself fortunate to have played a role in such a significant era of music and proud of the exposure CKLW afforded many, now legendary and superbly talented, Canadian artists." -

CKLW was a Becon radio station in the 60s and early 70s. A 50,000 watt Blowtorch coming out of Windsor Canada across the river from Detroit. You could hear it in the Florida Keys after Sundown. The best top 40 station anywhere. Glad I was around for it.

Hey, I am Rosalie’s daughter. Let me help set the record straight on why Bob wrote this song. Yes, this was a response song Bob recorded because Punch Andrew’s (Bob’s Manager) brought new music from Bob for my Mom to hear and hopefully play on CKLW. My Mom listened to the music and decided to pass on it. Word got back to Bob and he recorded this song as a response. My Mother refused to play this song on CKLW once it was recorded. To date, Thin Lizzy and The Sheepdogs have recorded this song. My Mother and Bob became great friends after this and the rest as they say is history. Remember that CKLW had a 50,000 watt signal and the way it was positioned in Canada, on a clear night people in 27 different U.S. cities could hear it. Many stations watched CKLW’s play list and if was good enough for CKLW, it was good enough for them. Thank you for your time in reading this response. We have a Facebook group entitled Send Rosalie Trombley To The Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame. I hope you will join us there. We need more members!

I have always wondered who Rosalie is? I hear she has a page on Facebook but I am wondering if she is a real person. And I also wonder if CKLW placed their transmitter on the Canadian Side of the US border. XROK 80 in EL Paso TX placed their transmitter on the Mexican side of the US Border with EL Paso TX. Why?? The Mexican government had lower restrictions on the wattage radio stations could use to transmit. Hell I do not know but I love song anyway.

Just read your post. I have to agree with everything you said. It's the history revisionists that have taken away great music and great stories from the kids of today. Can you imagine what would happen if a pirate radio station played music that the kids wanted to hear and tell the truth of what is happening today? The DJs and the program directors would be jailed for some obscure FCC regulation.

Rosalie, as the Music Director of CKLW would not add the song to the radio station's playlist when it came out. She was embarrassed by the attention it received and If she added it to the playlist, it would be like tooting her own horn. Despite her embarrassment, the song was added to the "Gold Book" and was occasionally heard on CKLW years latter.
