Hi Christian, I've been wrapping for around 17 years so have a lot of experience with 3M. When working with 3M and other vinyls that seem to drop the glue when repositioning, before removing the backing paper I try to trim the panel as close as I can get it to the panel I'm wrapping if I know the vinyl is going to need a lot of manipulation. I would leave more excess material on the areas where I know I'll need to heat to get them to conform (for example on the top of the wing/fender your wrapping. I would trim the arch out closer to the wing which will let you get the vinyl down further without having to apply heat (before removing your backing paper). This will help remove stress from your vinyl in advance. When heating, heat further away from where you really want to relax the vinyl. This will stop the glue from rebounding at your fitted edge or anywhere the vinyl is touching the panel, which is the reason the glue drops and leaves a line. I know it's not ideal but when taking the top of the wing/fender over the best way to not get glue lines when there is a big stretch is either have someone hold the vinyl until you heat it and both pull over at the same time to get the vinyl flat and take it down in one movement so that you don't need to reposition which will leave start leaving glue lines. If you don't have someone to help then roll up a piece of backing paper into a tight tube, put some masking tape around it to hold it together and stick it to the excess vinyl at the top of the wing. This way you will be able to keep the whole section off the panel whilst you heat it and straighten it out and can then pull it all over uniformly. If any if this doesn't make sense or you have any questions get back to me and I'll try and explain other ways to help work with this vinyl. Even though certain glues are advertised as reposition-able they actually require an old school fitting technique like how we used to fit the original colour change vinyls that you only get one go at I.e. Avery 900 etc super thin, super brittle, bubble easily, drop glue, generally require two maybe three fitters to fit a complex panel...yeah anyhow you get the picture. Hope this helps

Tech showed up a date late but just finished meeting with him, not very informative that’s for sure. Big thing (apparently) using a hard squeegee with a thin buffer and using a lot of pressure while squeegeeing, he also says that once you glass the panel the whole thing needs to be warmed up prior to install to avoid glue lines lmao

I’m in the industry for over 30 years now and used a ton of brands over the years. 3M has built quite a reputation when it comes to quality and let’s be honest, their stuff is priced like it’s the best on the market. It’s a given that their glue is superior in cast fillms, double sided tapes and painters tapes. 3M was one of the first to manufacture wrap vinyls and in my opinion were the best on the market back then. Not anymore. Nowadays I would always choose any Avery vinyl over the competing 3M product. The thing is that I always have to explain why because of 3M’s reputation because 3M is known as being “the best worldwide”. But “the best worldwide” shouldn’t break that easily when stretching it to the limit, shouldn’t end up with glue lines. In my experienced opinion it’s simply “the most overrated and overpriced brand”. It took me years to discover that I wasn’t failing, but the product was. Because I was used to trusting 3M’s reputation over myself. As far as I can see you are a perfectionist and built quite a rep yourself in showing all possible parts of the proces and even schooled me on some parts. There’s only one thing you did “wrong”: the choice of brand.

Possible mistakes are from the production of poor foil storage temperature, none of us knows who controls the production of foil glue, further from experience I know for 3M 2015 they had a bad batch of foil receding on the edges after 6 months, when I wrote them an email they answered for krajevd serves as an example. I have never tested the foils separately but I try to work them at higher room temperatures and after using the hair dryer to wait a moment for the foil to cool so that it has no lines under or from the glue, also use less force on the spatula and soft model.

Just for anyone interested - I wrapped the front badge area of my car in satin black using 3M in 2020 (quarantine sucks) and I got 'glue lines' in quite a few areas. I know they aren't air pockets. No amount of lifting and replacing, heat or smoothing with squeegee removed them. Don't bother with 3M if you are a perfectionist, they haven't fixed their product even after years of complaints.
@John-dn1li6 жыл бұрын
I think the problem definitely lies in the product itself. About 3 years ago I used 3m’s gloss black vinyl to do my roof and at this point I had never wrapped anything before. With that wrap the vinyl cam out flawless and absolutely no glue lines. Since then I have done several other different parts on friends cars just trying to practice before working up the courage to do my whole car. So about 4 months ago I ordered 3m’s gloss wicked wrap because I thought it was the best looking purple color on the market and it set me back about $680 for the roll. The same day I got the material I did my hood and I got glue lines ALL OVER. At first I thought okay maybe I used too much heat because I had noticed a spot where I overstretched it and the color had faded so I decided to try other parts on the car and then come back to it and redo it. I did my mirrors and got glue lines. I did my doors and got glue lines. I even did my gas lid and there were glue lines. Really. There were glue lines on a 6x8 square, flat gas cap with no curves or anything. It’s been very discouraging working with this material and I haven’t even finished the car yet because no matter what I try I end up with glue lines. I originally chose 3m’s gloss wicked because I wanted a purple color that was dark and wasn’t very in your face. I wanted a subtle color and it almost looks black which I exactly what I wanted. Now I don’t even know anymore, I almost just wish I had kept it white. If you can find anything out it would be great because I just purchased a new bumper and it has a lot of curves on it and it looks amazing but I know the glue lines will really detract from how it should look.

I think the problem is that you have an eye for perfection. You see every little thing. You see the car like a customer would their pride and joy. You see a product for what it is, not the hype. A lot of vinyl shops just don't care, I mean just look at the vinyl work on most cars. Scary to say the least (sure some are amateur installs). For a lot of shops some glue lines are the least of their concern when there are blatant quality issues surrounding the car.
@baronvonlimbourgh17165 жыл бұрын
As long as that is reflected in the price that isn't a bad thing though. Wrapping is expensive and a lot of people are satisfied with a 5 feet car and just wrant to have some flashy color or patern for not to much money on an older car. As long as their wraps look decent and they charge accordingly i think they should be welcomed.

Hey CK Wraps, 3M had some glue line issues a few years ago during the manufacturing process. This was the 180CV3 (could be other medias from them too). I do a lot of commercial applications (printed jobs). Not going to bash 3M but it was there even on flat areas. And I received a roll of their 480mc new print media were the release liner was not embossed properly ruining a full printed wrap for a client (air release channels were blocked). Bubbles that couldn't be popped, the adhesive layer just clobbed up. My supplier made good with a fresh roll & 3M made good on the reimbursement to them. Your techniques look good. As you know, some of the lines will gel over a few days but I feel you on the frustration. Color change wraps have to be a nightmare as we are so reliant on the media being perfect.

Having a second hand to lay the panel on will help a lot. I agree 3m has for sure gotten worse. As soon as it sits on a hard body line like the corner of the fender it can’t be picked up and moved even if it wasn’t squeegeed down. That looks to be how the one glue line got there just sitting on the body line for a short amount of time and then repositioned. I was at a shop where we only used 3m so I got used to working with it and no glue lines. Even then there would be panels being redone for a film issue.

hi CK , I have been removing and wrapping for 20 years+ . everything from cars , trucks , big semi trucks , trailers , tankers , all manor of entry-way window graphics . and also I have worked with many kinds of graphics material . check to see if some of those glue lines were already there . just because it says 3M , does not mean its perfect . factory imperfections do happen , but are rare from 3M . the material you are working with acts a lot reflective graphics that are normally on tractor trailer/tanker rears . those lines are usually formed from getting creases in the backing paper when removing it . there is no wat to get rid of them , because that type of material , chrome or reflective , is multi layered . it has a thin "reflective" metallic film that is easily damaged if wrinkled or folded over on itself . those lines can also form when cold stretching that particular type of material . mainly , because that metallic film layer has very little or zero stretching potential . heating up your working air temp to nearly 80 degrees will help with the cold stretching a bit , and , also , make a closer cut to that flared fender . you wont need near as much heating or stretching . in your shop , you can fab a clean , vertical surface for removing the backing paper cleanly , without creating folds or creases since you need a one person method .

Is there something we can spray to allow to set vinyl down easily to work wrinkles out? I got a few horizontal lines running across my first hood job yesterday that I've discovered now are these glue lines. I had to lift up and heat the small wrinkles out a number of times on the vvivid true CF vinyl which probably caused these lines. It was 90 degrees so adhesive would stick fast and the rapidtac2 I had underneath evaporated (I later learned from another video not to spray under as bottle instructions said to do). About 20 years ago I put vinyl race stripes on a car and truck using windex under to position easily and never had any issues

i was the detailing team supervisor in a car dealership and this is what i think... Im pretty sure u found out already but im pretty sure those are the glue lines got left on the car from the white plastic the factory had on the car for protection, when the car was brand new it had those white tape on it, after taking them off it will leave a fine glue line on the car, its hard to see it after car wash but it will show under lights and wrap... just use rubbing alcohol to clean the area where the outline of the white tape was ( most car brand has them around the same area) before u wrap it them will be fine. those glue lines get wash off after few car washs, u will only need to worry those line if the car is brand new come to u from the dealership.like ur videos hope this would help u. have a nice day.

YESSS FINALLY! These are the issues i've been commenting about, it is impossible to use this film without getting glue lines everywhere! it is extremely frustrating and to us beginners trying to practice and learn as much as possible it is very discouraging to fail every time without being able to figure out why. We've attended your Vvivid training so we know that we have at least the basics down, but we have yet to successfully complete a full wrap in 4 months... We've contacted the manufactures and were told that if we have to reposition or heat the film then we need to remove the whole piece and heat it all, then relay the vinyl again which is ridiculous. We are out of ideas to fix it to.

This shit used to drive me insane. I wrapped an Alpha Romeo in 3m Vampire Red and had to do the crazy ass fenders twice. 3M changed their glue and it is extra soft so it causes glue lines if it even barely touches a glossy surfaces. To install it successfully you pull glass across the body line of the fender splitting your install into two sections. The horizontal you should be able to lock down easy. Do not let the vinyl touch itself and do not reposition at all. Next pull glass in 2 sections and lock into place on the vertical part. Do not let the vinyl wrinkle up like you did on the vertical part of the fender( that has caused glue marks for me). You also need to tape the entire fender flare to get zero tension. Also when you pull glass make sure not to drag the material because that will also cause marks.

I've encountered similar issues and, like you, I do everything on my own. I very rarely have a second set of hands. I've found that ambient temperature and keeping the vinyl as flat as possible (prevent wrinkling) helps tremendously with these lines. I believe this is what people are referring to when they say you need two people. Metrorestyling sells an item called a "bumper stick" which you anchor the film to and stretch the vinyl uniformly in one direction which helps a lot with preventing this lines. Ultimately, it's a pain in the ass and I am on the verge of refusing to use 3M as well.

In my experience with using 3M, I've never had to rely on another person to glass out panels. But what I've found is that after glassing and tacking the horizontal or vertical center is relieve the tension glassing places on film and working out from center. As far as finishing edges or tucking, I'm always looking for a way to run the material in with slack over tension and I've never had glue lines or "snail trails" after learning this trick.

CK, just had the same issue with Avery satin black. 3 rolls of film and 2 weeks to wrap one car, only way we managed to get a decent but not perfect finish was from using a tac reducer and wrapping glove. I too have experienced those same glue lines, hence I do not use 3M vinyl for anything with the exception of when I'm printing and applying and the white point of the 3M is what I need to match previous jobs for a client. Otherwise I use IJ1080cv3 for printed wraps and Orafol or one of the other products for chrome wraps.

I used satin metallic blue 1080 3m for my company truck, had lines like crazy didn’t stretch anything, panels I did stretch looked the same. After 2 weeks they were gone.

Ive never done wrapping b4 but have u had this issue with other 3m film or even this particular color? maybe its just a bad batch of film or something else wrong with that particular roll.
@Jamie528505 жыл бұрын
Could the glue lines be forming when you removed the backing and allowing it to lay on the vehicle. Before you pulled the vinyl it looked like it was wrinkled while sitting in the car. Would that cause time for the glue lines to form?
@michaellangerman46156 жыл бұрын
Could it be just a weak glue because if it was a strong glue then it wouldnt come off the material so that tells me the glue is not sticking to the material well. Or the glue maybe to thin when it was put on the material. Maybe a defective roll.

I’ve been Using 3m 1080 since day one. At first I would’ve agreed with you on the terrifying glue-lines. The best way to avoid glue-line that I’ve learned is to pre heat the vinyl with heat gun before glassing it on the car and working with the difficult part first...if you can.
@MrJamster19896 жыл бұрын
Collin Connell you shouldn’t really have to go to these extremities to install a premium range product. It should be flawless straight off the roll. Poor at best by 3M

I have only wrapped a few of my own cars over 5 years but I get similar if not worse with vvivid premium plus, I also get zipper marks just unrolling it. It is just thick, stiff and yuk to work with plus it has so much stick straight away it's crap

Started doing my first wrap recently and I am getting glue lines. It's some cheap vinyl though because I wanted to just learn the process first. It's pretty bad stuff I can tell because it's high tack, almost immediate grab and then you pull it up and ...glue lines. I do have a question CK and it may also just be this cheap vinyl but I have a body line recess that runs front to back of the vehicle. I have wrapped two panels so far and both are showing lifting in that recess. I know it's clean, it's dental clean. I am not overly bridging it and I have tried post heating. It looks great on day 1 but after it sits in the sun for a day...bubbles. Any ideas? I should mention it is a steel body and not fiberglass or carbon fiber.

My theory on 3m glue lines: their adhesive feels a lot more aggressive and “thick” to combat lifting issues. Now I have noticed that almost all minor glue lines will fade all the way out within a month period or so depending on climate and conditions. Major lines fade but are never all the way gone. The perfectionist way to install 3m is pre stretch as much as you possibly can before that film ever hits the car. 3m is known for its stupid strong adhesion. Avery is known for its ease of install And lifting imo.

We wrap with 3m and idk if this is your issue or not but I've gotten bad rolls before where I was getting the same problems I contacted 3m and after 3 phone calls I just decided to buy a new roll of the same stuff and it was fine

Christian, as a complete and utter amateur, I can tell you how it's been for me- VViViD > Avery > 3M. I've done some random wraps on my car, and to be honest I'm quite upset I ended up doing the delete with it. I'll end up removing that wrap when winter passes and redoing it with good film. It's a shame.

Have you tried a wet application with this tricky product maybe it is the glue gathering after talking to the panel before you work the vinyl just an idea hope it has good results for you

Isn't it a problem with the 1080 series. I only use 1380 and I rarely have glue lines

You may have sworn off of 3M at this point, but I have a suggestion if you haven't. There's a shop in California that I see uses a lot of 3M film. They always seem to glass it in one shot using 2-3 people (two to hold, one to peel the release liner, then they glass it over the area. From what I've seen, they have the same commitment to quality that CK Wraps does. You may want to reach out to Daniel, the owner, at Premium Auto Styling for tips or tricks that they use to avoid the glue lines. This video is a couple of years old, so you may have already figured it out or dumped 3M altogether.

I wrapped a friends hood in 3M matte black and we ran into the same issues. Lucky we did the rest of the car in Avery gloss red and it came out perfect. I think it is the adhesive that they use verses the competition. It does not slide well at all, and the second it sees fresh paint it seems to lock down right away and not want to release. The truck you see in my avatar is a Chevy dually that was done in Vvivid and it was great to work with as you well know. Keep up the good work I always learn a lot from your channel!

CK, Im looking to lease a Mercedes 2019 e300. I was going to get the matte grey paint option but was told its hard to maintain. Now I'm considering white or black factory paint then wrapping it in satin grey. Question 1- Is a matte satin wrap a better option than matte factory paint for a lease? Question 2- What factory paint color is best to wrap aesthetically speaking? * I assume there will be painted parts that will remain visible in crevices and inside of doors. Thank you CK!
@CKWraps6 жыл бұрын
Best car color to get is black and have that wrapped. Satin wrap will be easier to maintain than satin paint

Was this the 3M--M227 vinyl? If so it says that it has a 3' stretch in 10 inches. I do recall it said do not use a torch to heat the material. But yes it was a pain in the ace to work with.

I was trained on 3m a few years ago. Getting back into it. Mayve you shouldn't completely uncover the backing of the wrap for the whole section? 🤷🏾♂️ The no heat instructions had got me tho. I was taught if you can avoid using heat excessively thats good. Also maybe the glue lines will come out if you post heat the wrap after it cures to the car. I would say wait a few hrs and run the heat gun over the area and see if the wrap tightens up, it did for me. Not specifically with glue line but i left the magnet on a fresh job and it left a print, i was messing with it a few days later with the heat gun and it took out the print🤷🏾♂️

Great stuff, just subscribed. Don't know anything about what your doing wrong lol but seeing the challenger in your thumb nail i figured I'd ask. Have you ever done or seen a challenger with only the top half wrapped? I've seen hood, roof, trunk but what about with full top half? I have a yellow challenger and think it would look awesome with satin black upper half but can't find any wrap jobs like that to check it out beforehand. Thank you

I'm a solo installer also, and I try to avoid 3m as much as possible. Their colors are some of the best, but the glue lines, tearing issues, and the "hazy lines" throughout the roll, make it very frustrating to work with. That being said, I have had near flawless results with 3m, but I prefer Avery and even Hexis. Also, I try not to pull the door handle cable with my glove hand, because they usually have a little bit of grease on them.

Man, I´ve been working with vinyls too much poor in comparison with 3M products, not by option, but due to the reality in my country, but the problem with glue lines is the same. What I noticed is that they disappear with the passing of time, after some days. In my experience they appear around door handles or near deep pannels specially when I take too much time to do theses areas. Hope you find a solution. Keep the nice job!

3M is very picky at what temperature its being worked it. for minimum glue line try to maintain temp between 18C-20C and also u know this better, lay in as soon as possible, they usually occur when its warmer and the material is lifted to be layed in

I used 3M camo on my F150 mirrors. Glue lines don’t really matter because the camo masks them, but the material was difficult to work with. It bunched up when I did even moderate stretching. I am no expert but I know how to do a decent job, but I am not at all satisfied. Do Vivid or Avery offer camo patterns? If so, how do I get my hands on them? I also used 3M camo on my rocker panels two years ago and although it looked great initially, it is starting to peel in a few spots and is fading. If I can find Edge in another brand I may just redo the whole thing.

I did my first hood wrap VVIVID true CF yesterday and noticed some horizontal lines running across... glue lines I learned now from end of this video. I had to pull up a number of times to heat wrinkles out so I'm guessing the creases on pull up caused that. Also I had a few weird virticle black lines that arent straight..looks like running water spots, running down the carbon fiber that I'll hide with a stripe. I found out from another video i wasn't supposed to spray tac2 underneath before laying down, as bottle said to do. So maybe the porous lines was from that. I wanted to get the 3m 2080 vampire red but maybe not now

It's a shame because they make such unique colors but it's not worth the headache in the end. I was installing 3m Gloss White Gold Sparkle (name?) on a Toyota C-HR and glue lines were everywhere. Even on the flattest, simplest areas to wrap with no tension whatsoever.
