Sorry in advance for the paragraphs because I’m not sure how much you know about these monitors but here’s some info that should be helpful to you. These are clones of the Yamaha NS-10M monitors. More so the horizontal studio version of them. The VTPC knob refers to the original vertical NS-10M monitors where engineers like Bob Clearmountain would put tissue paper over the tweeters to tame them a little bit because they were harsh. Yamaha later updated the tweeters to have a small felt like ring as to not be as harsh, these new tweeters were stock on the horizontal NS-10M Studio version. The VTPC knob allows you to change the tweeters to sound like the original brighter vertical model or the less harsh horizontal model and everything in between. You can even make them way brighter than the originals if you wanted to. From what I’ve heard, just under 11 o’clock should be close to the original vertical models. Somebody I talked to who dialed them in with the horizontal studios said if you want the horizontal model start the VTPC knob all the way down at minimum then go up 3 clicks. I believe most NS-10 users prefer the horizontal model, as do I. These monitors are not flat, they don’t have a lot of sub lows or crazy top end and are really hyped in the mid range. But that’s the point of these. The original NS-10Ms were pretty bad bookshelf speakers and were picked as a reference monitor by Bob Clearmountain and later, other engineers. Many people use these to do 90% of the work, not just reference. The idea behind these speakers are that if you make a song sound great on these, then they’ll sound great everywhere else. They take a bit to get used to but my mixes translate so much better after getting these. Many great engineers have used these style of monitors like Andy Wallace, Alan Moulder, Ken Andrews, Brendan O’Brien, Joe Barresi, and a ton more. If you decide to position them vertically, I suggest swapping the left and right speaker so that the tweeters are on the outside. Sorry again for a novel-worth of paragraphs 😂 but I hope all this info helps you out.

First off, the novel is great, loved the read... 😁 Thanks for the information on the Tissue Paper, I would have never thought that was the reason behind the name. I am glad to hear they are not using tissue paper in them... ...After you mentioned the felt, I do notice it around the edge of the high range driver. I am aware of a ton of mixing engineers who use these Yamaha remakes. Of course having the CLA badge on them just adds the approval of engineers in three easy letters. Not that Chris is the end all to engineering, but he has a lot of amazing names under his belt, including some friends of mine who had some tracks mastered by him (Glostik Willy). I am looking forward to getting to use these after my studio opens up in June... ...I have plenty back logged live records waiting to be remixed, and plenty more new recordings scheduled. Maybe one day I may have helped an artist hit their golden record goal, but for now helping a band make it to the finalist of the local WAMI Awards (The Roving Skallywags, and, The Trash Pandas) is a pretty good start. yoo nan hopefully you see this wanted to ask if its 100% 3 clicks from min to get the horizontal ns10 feel and also wanted to ask what you set your gain at i see alot of people setting the gain to max did you do the same !

@@BOODA575 I have the volume on the monitors maxed. But yeah, I start with the VTPC all the way down at minimum then go up 3 clicks. I personally have never tested it against a real pair myself but somebody else I talked to did and they said it was at that setting where they seemed to match the most to the original horizontal ns-10m studios.

@@dezleegraham sweet i found that having my monitors on max doesnt give me much space to move my gain knob on my interface is this an issue for you too ? i was thinking of knocking down my gain to like 50% and then i can crank my interface a little more but wasnt sure if it would effect the low end response … well what low end response there is anyway lol thanks for the reply bro i could talk ns10s and cla10s all day lol

The studio is doing a lot of remote work right now. as far as the speakers, right now; I am not overly impressed with the cost vs musicality. I have yet to AB them to my mastering system. The mastering system is in a separate building. But stand alone, they are lacking. As far as my mastering speakers... ...I should compare them one day. in an AB. But only after I drive to FL to buy the last remaining set available on the market. (LOL) Maybe in winter when I have more in studio projects. Then when the video comes out I don't have to fight the sales wave to get replacement parts.
