Claire Austin initially launched by David Austin as a bush and in more recent years re-classified as a short climber in my opinion is neither and should be treated as neither
This rose is utterly stunning and should be treated as a large informal bush given an obelisk pillar or post to tie into loosely in my opinion it will never conform to being a tidy climber it will be lumpy bumpy and untidy
The blooms are a stunning heavy Ivory white very deeply copped it makes them slightly susceptible to balling It has a strong old English myrth fragrance and cuts well often still in bloom in late November and very early December when the cold temperatures affect the natural colour of the rose leaving it spotted and tinged with pink
A real must have rose if you have the space comfortably reaching 8’ x 4’

I have about 20 of these beautiful roses in my garden, they’ve bloomed wonderfully and have a unique scent. A few clematises, camellias, orientalist poppies; foxgloves, magnolia, but the Claire Austins are something else!

Hello from Australia!!! I absolutely agree with your experience with Claire Austin. I grow her as a weeping standard so I get the beautiful fragrance at head height - right where you need it to be!!! Mine is now going on 2 years old and has a 5 foot stem and everything just cascades down from there. I also cut and bring her into the house but the petals showering onto our dining table is so worth it!!! A lot of my David Austins I grow as standards as I rent so most of my beauties are in pots. My Abraham Darby had georgeous blooms this year but I would never had the space to grow him otherwise. Ditto Jubilee Celebration which along with Golden Celebration I also grow as standards. I also have Boscobel, the Squire and Lady of Shallott, all standards in pots, surrounding our potager. Thank you too for your reviews. Even though the way David Austin markets his products out here is really different { we don't get to grow Tottering-By-Gently or Generous Gardener or even Lady Emma Hamilton. For shame about that one!}, I have had success growing a lot of the older , discontinued stock like Molineux and Belle Story. And I find myself tuning into your knowledge as every rose grower has something to contribute and we all learn!!! Cheers, Liz.

This is very helpful. Upon unpacking my Claire Austin it struck me as different from my other climbers. Disappointing that it won’t lend itself well for the arbor I had intended it for, but I’ll put it in an obelisk as you suggest and see how it goes. Thank you!

Not to be treated as a climber, very interesting. I tried and perhaps this is why it didn’t work for me. For me the flowers were very flaccid from there weight. Pointing ground wards the whole time. The scent for me was very light. And any rain it killed it like you say.. it was only a year old but all those things for me with the roses I already have I’ve ended up donating it to my next door neighbour. Maybe with age she will have better luck. Great video again Ben and I’ve no doubt top info.

@@the_gardenerben yes this is what I explained to my neighbour, it needs more time to get a better picture. But for me I didnt think all the minus points mentioned would have cleared over time. I bought this. Bare root. I received in March 2024. I’m in zone 6a. I was worried when I received and planted because in March it’s still in the 20’s. It made it and I had my first bloom June 15. However, the bloom is no where near 3+ inches. It’s about the size of a quarter. I don’t know if that is normal for first bloom but I was very disappointed 😢
@the_gardenerben
@the_gardenerben 2 ай бұрын
Please don’t be disappointed a bear rose is never going to achieve it’s full size or display all of its characteristics in its first or sometimes even second season these are long-term investments this Plants going to be with you in your garden for up to 15 years and is going to need some time to establish itselfthe plan I’m displaying in this video here at the time of filming was around seven years old and standing around 8 feet tall Plants are going to need some time to establish decent roots systems which can intern support large plants. Please focus on your watering mulching and getting the plant established as the plant gain strength and size your size colour and even fragrance will be fully displayed in time.

That very much depends on how you grow it as a climber. She reaches around 8 feet high and around 8 feet wide, but it’s not a very tidy climber more of a fan shaped Bush, I grow mine on an obelisk. You could also use a singular post and loosely tied in a comfortably reaches 8’ x 4’ wide.
