This video is an update to the David Austin Climbing Rose Pruning Video. Take a look at how our rose shaped up from Spring until it's Late June Bloom. Strawberry Hill rose is grown in our zone 5b climate on a cedar arbor and is in its third year of growth. This was a followup video to the first pruning its received since planting. Overall, Im thrilled with the progress but there is more work (and patience) to be done!

Planted my first David Austin Roses last year , one climbing,one bush , in peach colors. So many blooms but the climber is still short, looks more like a bush and it’s a painful job to train them up the trellis. Mine of course got rained on too and the blooms looked sad because they were all hanging downward. I have absolutely no idea on how to prune or shape the climbing rose but I had to have one. I watched some videos but I think I need to have somebody to show me in person
@GuidingGreenThumbs
@GuidingGreenThumbs 3 жыл бұрын
Its so hard to find a pruning video that matches the climber you have a home. I went through countless videos trying to figure it all out.. it was very difficult and still, im not 100% sure what im doing haha. I have some tweaking to do this fall but im happy to report that i have sizable new growth canes to train and keep from this years growth so i will just have to train them where i was lacking this year. Its all a journey! I agree with having an in person trainer... would make things SO much clearer!

Def a strong scent, the beetles LOVE the roses and the leaves. I am constantly pulling them off. I pretty much assume July and the first two weeks of august are wasted to them but I get the early flush of flowers and a last flush. Def worth the annoying 6 weeks in between. 😉

@GuidingGreenThumbs
@GuidingGreenThumbs 3 жыл бұрын
Always have issues!! I’ve sworn them off MANY times! But here’s what I’ve learned …. Most varieties after establishing will give you the main flush of bloom in June and that is before my biggest pest (Japanese beetles) come out. So I just accept that that’s what happens. I enjoy the first blooms and then I focus on the other colors blooming after. I haven’t had too much of an issue with diseases thankfully but I’m a glutton for punishment lately with trying more roses!

It looks beautiful. Is this in full sun all day or how many hours of sun and shade does it receive? I have a large property with a lot of lovely forest. I live in the mountains of Virginia and have an abundance of different varieties of flowers that are in bloom from February - mid November. I actually have roses that begin in April and they are still blooming and today is October the 1st! Your landscape looks very similar to mine. The trees are lovely in the background. I have a deck that is 70ft long and ranges in height from 4ft to 8ft. I began with 5 climbers in the spring of 2021. Instead of going with one specific rose and one color, I coordinated colors and textures that complimented each other and so far I’ve had amazing results with varying degrees of pinks and yellows intermingling so beautifully. This past late April I added 2 bare root Portlandias from Heirloom Roses. Their first blooms appeared in late May and have continued to bloom throughout summer. All of my roses are from Heirloom or Jackson & Perkins and all have done very well, but I have to say that the Portlandia has grown the fastest of them all. It is nearly 5 ft tall in just one growing season. The canes are strong and easy to work with. The flowers are large and glorious. Also, I have 3 tall poplar trees that stand in a row and within 6ft of each other. The three stand out from the rest of the forest and receive a little morning sun and a lot of afternoon sun. I wanted to dress the area up, so I planted Don Juan climbers in between each tree and to the left and right outside trees; a total of 4. I was so surprised at how quickly they grew and by June each one had flowered. They only produced a few flowers this summer, but because of the growth rate, I knew the trees would not be enough to support them. My son built some lovely old battlefield type fence, woven in and out of the trees for them to grow on. I am going to let the rails weather to a gray and then coat them with a clear deck sealant. I can just imagine how beautiful those blood red roses will look on that weathered fence. You have such beautiful trees, I thought I would pass that idea along to you. Best Wishes🌹
