Here's another suggestion. If Season 6 brings us to the present day which I am very much hoping, I hope it goes down like this. On the day of the late Duke of Edinburgh's funeral, Elizabeth is looking at the honor guards at the Quadrangle at Windsor Castle from the Private Apartments. Then she sits for a moment and hears echoes of the different pivotal conversations and quotes from Seasons 1 to 4. Then Imelda Staunton walks up to a large mirror in the room and sees Claire Foy dressed up in the same clothes she wore when she was talking to her grandmother Queen Mary of Teck during the episode Act of God, and Olivia Colman wearing the same clothes on the episode War where she scolds Prince Charles about his planned divorce with Diana. Then, the echo of Queen Mary's voice saying "the Crown must win, must always, win" comes in as Elizabeth heads to the door to prepare for the funeral. Then the combined voices of Matt Smith, Tobias Menzies and Jonathan Pryce say in a ghostly echo "Always two steps behind you cabbage." She takes one last look in the mirror and the real Elizabeth II is reflected (making her first official cameo though I doubt that will happen but it could be cool) before she walks away. And the final echo is faint saying "God Save the Queen."

At the end of the second Elizabethan era, the Queen taught us how to stick to duty. Even 2 days before her death she appointed the new PM, DUTY and THE CROWN was paramount till the end, and that tells us how seriously she took this speech. It was one of the great episode prologues of this show, one which highlights the similarities and differences of the future Queen and future Prime Minister: both the same age and sex, one born into first in line to the throne, the other born from almost nothing; one burdened with conforming to traditions of the past, the other bolstered with bold ideas of change for the future. Here as they come of age, Princess Elizabeth aspires to serve an empire committed to unity and solidarity, while Margaret Roberts aspires to serve a party committed to self-reliance and prosperity. The two future leaders have clearly different futures ahead of them, where their roles are set in motion to confront one another’s vision without either knowing what lies ahead.

As I speak to you today from Capetown, I am 6,000 miles from the country where I was born - but I’m certainly not 6,000 miles from home. I get why countries have wanted to move away from the crown (modernism / self determinism), but the commonwealth is something that we shouldn’t throw away lightly. It's a great scene because it's a great way to start this particular episode. It shows all the different countries of the Commonwealth Elizabeth is speaking to. How diverse they are, how varied they are, but they are part of something. And she's speaking to them as they are her peers. Then we see young Thatcher shushing the rest of the women in the common room, while she listens to the then-Princess Elizabeth with reverence. And then how she is pushing herself through Oxford, and attending classes, going to society meetings, as the only woman among men--even then she was working hard. But we also get this interesting undertone as Margaret's only interaction with women in this flashback is angrily shushing them (other than her mom with her arm around her at her graduation). This whole season was Elizabeth and Margaret at blows with each other. Margaret no longer respects Elizabeth. Even at the beginning of the season, Margaret mentioned she was not putting any women on her cabinet because they were too emotional--right to Elizabeth's face. And Elizabeth was struck with the coldness of Margaret. This episode the animosity reaches the boiling point. And Margaret has disregarding Elizabeth's speech. She doesn't care about the Commonwealth, this diverse legion of countries, or speaking up against a country that is doing something completely inhumane to people because of their skin color--who were there first which the rest of the world was against. She just cares about herself, her agenda, and besting the Queen.
