Tane it’s super easy to whip cream by hand. Just make sure everything is ice cold. Put your bowl and whisk in the freezer for about half an hour and use just a couple teaspoons of powdered sugar to lightly sweeten it when you’re whipping it. The cornstarch will help stabilize the cream so that it doesn’t go flat within a few minutes after it’s made.

I'm in my 70s, and I think of angel food cake as something from the 1950s. Perhaps that means that it's actually timeless.
@lestranged5 жыл бұрын
It did have a resurgence in the 90's because it has no butter or oil. That was the era when fat was considered bad but carbs were perfectly fine, so angel food cake was an allowed "cheat" food on those low fat diets.
@lestranged5 жыл бұрын
Oh and also egg yolks were "bad" because cholesterol. So you saw a lot of recipes just using the whites, egg-white omelets were popular, etc. It was just basically the opposite of today when carbs are the designated "bad" food. In 20 years we will look back on this current keto fad with the same "wtf were they thinking?".

The editing on this is masterful, specifically when she wiped her hands after putting the cake in the oven and when she was wiping the cream

I love homemade angel food cake. My mother made it (I grew up in the 50's), I've made it all of my adult life from a 1973 'Joy of Cooking'. Had to adjust the adding-sugar-instructions when I got a powerful Kitchen Aid mixer. I like almond extract & vanilla for flavorings. I bake 'til the top is golden brown, and the cracks on top are dry in the centers.

I'm a 2000's baby and I really don't understand why people don't give more love yo Angel Food Cake. I remember eating it when I was really young and I seriously miss it. It was so nice

My grandmother and I use to make it together when I was growing up! I definitely remember it being dark golden brown on the outside and that was my favorite part. Also the smell of almond extract takes me back.

When I was a kid, we used to always eat angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries at my grandmas house. It makes me think of her and those happy times. I’ve made it once before as a gift and only got one piece. I’m looking forward to making it again!

Claire makes it looks so simple to make an angel food cake. I use brown sugar and a squeeze of orange juice with some of the orange zest and half a tsp of good quality vanilla extract when I mascerate strawberries for shortcake.

Both sounds like they'd contrast great with the cake. I'll have to do that if I ever bake an angel food cake. I was gonna bake one for my birthday cake but I got too busy handling other stuff.
