The look on Mrs Fitz face at the sight of Claire in her 1940's underwear was hysterical I thought. Very Funny. The poor woman was horrified.

My favorite scene, it really shows her transformation into the 18th century and you can see she was watching Mrs. Fitz to remember how to do it so she’d be able to dress herself when needed. I love watching these shows for the historical fashion, but if I was transported back in time, I’d probably make a fashion faux pax here and there until I figured everything out.

Those are stays, not a corset. Corsets were a century later. Tight lacing didn't exist either. I love the dressing scene though.

I remember my mother telling me about this scene from the book while I was in high school. I remember saying it was very clever of Claire to say that her bra was from France.

I think that claire would have been unused to the sensation of the pair of stays, like it's not tight by any means but it is a more compressive garment then she'd be used to i think

I believe medieval times had something called breast bags that resembled a bra. Stays were different to corsets as well. I actually prefer them to bras. Something that gives you all round a support from your core, waist and back feels much better than just over the shoulder support

My 2 fave moments of this scene are the look claire gives mrs fitz when she takes her broth away,and when mrs fitz puts on the shift and claire sort of throws her arms down like a petulant child ,brilliant😅

They probably called the stays a corset because they were 'dumbing' it down for the audience. They probably labelled the video 'corset' for the KZbin algorithm. But still, a stiffened kirtle, pair of bodies, stays, corsets, girdles etc. are all different foundation garments & should be labelled correctly. At least they put the stays on over a shift & didn't just put it straight onto her bare skin like some other shows/movies do.

I was an extra in Pirates of the Caribbean about 11 years ago and we had to wear full dresses like this. It really wasn't too uncomfortable and we were in them for hours. They do keep you warm.

It's not. Natural fibers are very breathable, you have linen next to your skin to wick up sweat, wool and fur to keep you warm if it's cold, and stays (proto-corset) aren't uncomfortable if they're not tightlaced (which most women didn't do most of the time). I mean, for ANY clothing style there will be some people who just can't stand it at all, but on average this is no worse than modern clothing re: comfort.
