One of my absolute favourite scenes! That perfect sparring dance rapidly transitioning between gentle concern, irritation, indignation, anger, full-blown wrath, hurt and anguish, followed by tender reconciliation is probably the best acted sequence in the entire series.

The only tiny bit of criticism I have for this otherwise superbly acted scene is the voiceover at the end. For me it falls flat when Jamie explicitly declares to viewers that he is in love with Claire. It's cringy. And utterly unnecessary. Did the producers have an urge to reassure the audience after the fight: "But that's okay, he still loves her"? If so, they poorly misjudged their audience, and broke one of the most important rules in cinema: "Show it, don't say it."

There was a reason for it. This was the first episode of the second part of season 1, which the producers and writers wanted narration from Jamie’s perspective. The episode began this way. And also picked up from his perspective in rescuing Claire from BJR (entering through the window etc). It makes better sense with the beginning narration.

Claire behaves like an infantile child the whole way through this scene, saying anything and everything to not take responsibility for her own actions. She lashing out and trying to hurt the man who saved her just to protect her own foolish pride. She has zero gratitude. It's a childish temper tantrum, and a proper man of the period probably would have just decided since she was going to act like a child to spank her.

What the fuck are you talking about? Men are still this way. Victim blaming is like the one thing men can agree on when it comes to women. And don’t start crying about, “not all men”…..it’s enough of them that you probably know several women that have gone through it. For evidence look at the responses you got from men. Why is it not listening? Like she said, he is not her boss. She isn't supposed to just passively listen and obey, she has her own mind about things. She should always listen to her own gut, right or wrong. Jaimie never listened to Claire, he always followed his own gut, but no one says he always caused trouble by not listening to her. Double standard. She was a brave, independent and strong woman, imo.

Also they were both releasing the immense fear they’d experienced over the past 24+ hours and anger is a common mask, and emotional release, for fear. @sookibeulah9331 As a viewer, it's much more exciting to me to interpret well enacted behaviour in a scene and thus arrive at a truth about the character myself, than to listen to useless explanatory narration. And in this case the narration was useless. It feels as if it was added because they lacked trust in Sam Hughan's ability to show us the desired emotion. But that's by far not the case. Sam Hughan is a terrific actor. We could already see the content of the monologue written on his face, absorbed in his every fibre.

@@senluke no shit, but your wording implies 1. She was 100% wrong. 2. That his anger was justified, when he was the one to insist she stayed in the woods with the young guy after previous incidents exposed that the highlands weren't safe even alone with just him. Her "guard" walked off to take a crap. She was already alone whether she walked up to the stonehenge or standing right there. Jamie's anger wasn't justified.

They both wrong even in this time. Who goes for a walk in the woods in such a times and then gets angry cause he tried to protect you. But then who thinks someone would do something like this on purpose. In the end the essence of reasoning is all that needed to be said. Harsh times makes a harsh man especially when he wants to keep you safe. That's any male mind in any type of relationship with a woman.

@@_Colie Understand her feelings? This isn't about her feelings. They are in very dangerous times where the enemy is constantly milling around. She knows this. Second, the men around him just had to risk their lives to rescue her. They aren't trying to die for her. From their viewpoint, if he can't control his wife, they will not stay loyal to him. I don't like how she was expected to obey him, but that's the world she's in. She needs to fall in line whether she likes it or not. It would be like me waking up in a country where the women are expected to wear burkas and me insisting on wearing a bikini when I know damn well that that will reflect poorly on me and whoever I'm staying with. I love Claire, but she was forever putting Jaime in a position where he was having to defend her and explain her to people. It got on my nerves.

@@leoniep9231 Yes, I would if the book was written in the sense that Jaime was in a matriarchal society and was expected to obey Claire. For me, this isn't about feminism. This is about Claire being stupidly stubborn. Should she have to obey him? No. Were their expectations about men and women fucked up? Of course. However, she knows what this society is like and what's expected of her. This doesn't just affect her; it affects Jaime and his relationship with his men as well. They had to risk their lives to rescue her all because she was trying to get back to the stone. She should have stayed put. Of all people, she knows that the English are everywhere. If she had to marry Jaime for protection, talking a walk alone as a woman was peak stupidity.
