I made this last night. Absolutely delicious. The caramel is a small extra step that i think really brings this to another level. The only thing I would mention is if the baking temp and basic instructions could be in the video description that would be amazing. I dont think this is in either of the books so I really had to follow the video along, and even though I watched it a few times added written instructions would have been amazing! Much love Claire, thank you for everything you do!

FALL DESSERTS INCOMING MY FAVORITE SEASON HERE WE GO
@daveplaysdestiny3 ай бұрын
It's interesting when you talk about what makes a good cooking apple. In the UK our most commonly used cooking apple is the Bramley. It's practically inedible raw as it's INCREDIBLY sour, with a thick skin. But it cooks down to tender pieces of apple surrounded by apple sauce. Not in a mealy way. Makes me wonder if there's an episode where you bake a whole load of apple pies with different apple varieties (try and find bramleys if you can - you can get them in the states, just rare) and get some blind taste testers to see what they like about each of them. Apples are just the best fruit!

I like a mix of Cortland with either Snapdragon or Granny Smith. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to get Cortlands here except the maybe 1-2 weeks a year the Wegmans has them. I grew up just north of Cortland so ate a lot of those growing up.

How long did you chill your crumble for? I know it says up to 24 hours but unsure what’s a good chill time!
@memuller3 ай бұрын
@@saraoo964 I chilled it on the refrigerator for as long as I cooked the apples, around 20 min. It is so the butter has time to firm up, so there's actually crumbles and not a soup of butter, oats and sugar. Hope this makes sense.

1:20 "And you cannot mess it up too much" My brain instantly: Well you could burn the crisp, or undercook your apples, or just completely forget the ice cream 😅
@garrulus33993 ай бұрын

Burning the sugar and the caramel sauce appears to be the trickiest part. However, Claire describes how to avoid this by starting with part of the sugar, showing what to look for in the color change, and how adding the butter and cream reduce the heat. If I mess it up, it is totally on me. Claire has explained and shown me how to do it correctly. Now, how to translate this into ramekins so I don't eat it all at once. BTW in my house, some cardamom may just "accidentally" be spilled into the topping with the cinnamon.

I've been binge watching this channel and just any Claire videos in general and this whole episode I had the word steusel stuck in my head, everytime Claire mentioned a crumble topping. So I googled it. The difference between a streusel and a crumble is the flour and sugar ratios and streusel has a chewier texture.

Just wanted to drop a line and say I made this for my wife last night, I used a Dutch oven instead of a skillet and it turned out great. I was worried about the caramel since that’s not something I’ve made I don’t think but it couldn’t have been easier. Overall I think this is better than an apple pie, wasn’t too sweet or too heavy with all the pie crust.
