I keep my onions in the fridge, and now I never have the tears when cutting them. This tip has worked for my mother also. Sure they might keep longer if stored differently, but they do keep for two to three months in the fridge.

I have tried this one, and it definitely lessens the burn but it still gets me unfortunately!

For chopping onions - ski-goggles! Seriously it is a life-changer. The stuff in the onion that makes you cry is attracted to the moisture in the whites of your eyes, and the goggles stops that happening.

Amazing! As a child born in the 70s, raised in the 80s, I am literally getting nostalgic... My mom made SO much in the crockpot... So much rice and beef in the 80s hahah love it.

My mom did too! And so do I! The love of the Crockpot never fades lol!

When I first started to cook, which was many moons ago, chopping onions was the worst. Onions always bothered me. Now I'm 60 🥴, and onions and me have finally become one - so to speak. I can't remember the last time my eyes watered when chopping an onion 🤔. Hopefully you'll grow out of it like I did. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I'll have to check out your other vintage recipes. Blessings 😊

Thank you for the trip down memory lane. I had one of those in 1974 as a wedding gift. Made many wonderful meals with it. I agree that this recipe was a little odd. LOL Most enjoyed!!!!! Jim in California

FDA nerfed/changed Slow Cooker minimum Temps around 2005-ish and mandated that all new slow cookers cook at a much higher temp, thus turning them into boil monsters that will wreck most classic slow cooker recipes unless you adjust accordingly. A slow cooker should never be able to boil anything to death when on the "Low" setting. That's why I now find it very hard to pass up an older model slow cooker when I find them for sale. Even the ones without a removable liner. 😁

I have had great luck with this old cooker! I see them at thrift stores from time to time, I love the longevity!

I had a 1970 crockpot and about a year ago. It bit the dust. It just wouldn’t heat up anymore. I’m glad you found one. I now use a small crockpot for just one or two people it saves space and I don’t waste as much food. Great recipe. Remember back in the 70s they didn’t use a lot of spices … well not at my house anyway.

Hi Claire, this excites me. I have always wondered why you can’t put raw ground beef in the crockpot. I think I will give this one a try with more seasonings as you said. But if I can make something that tastes pretty darn good with raw ground beef and mix it all together and forget about it that will make life very easy. I love your videos and I love your voice. I wonder if anybody’s ever told you that you have a really nice speaking voice have a great day love from Canada.

Oh, my lord! Flshbacks to childhood: an actual original Crockpot! This could have been the same very one used by my mother to make so many quick and convenient meals. Thank you for the warm-and-comfy feelings produced from watching this video. Side note: covered onion choppers are one of the world's greatest inventions. Thank goodness you followed the Crockpot Cookbook instructions and cut those cheese slices into triangles, because anyone from back in the day knows that squares would never have worked. Always have the courage of your convictions, even though not following cookbook instructions could lead to the end of civilization as we know it. That cheesy serving looked very seventies: very cheesy and very melty. Wow - flashback. Keep in mind, crockpots were never meant to produce flavorful, tasty meals: pizzazz was never meant to be an ingredient in the seventies. Keep in mind, Cayenne Pepper and Smoked Paprika were unknown in the seventies, except by extremely ethnic families (my Hungarian grandmother put paprika in everything, but would never deign to use a crockpot, which was considered communist sacrilege). And Worcestershire Sauce in the seventies was on the shelves in pantries of American kitchens for one reason and one reason only: making batches of Chex Mix during the holidays, when Chex Mix was one of the four basic food groups. Thank you for sharing such a flashback memory, and for giving me something to talk about in my next therapy session. Cheers!

Hi Clair, relatively new subscriber. Really have enjoyed your videos. As a young mother in 1975, we (I) had no clue about using herbs and seasonings in cooking. They were not ready common place as they are now. Keep your informative videos coming 😊

I was living in New Brunswick and my husband and I went to Maine and I bought one of the old Rival Crockpots. I was pregnant and my daughter was born in July 77. I didn’t have that recipe book but a favourite meal from the small cookbook in the box was called Smothered Steak. It used slices of round steak, and green pepper, molasses and soy sauce along with a can of tomatoes. Oh and of course onions. I’ve lost the recipe but I just wing it now. Perhaps the recipe is in that book. I love your videos! I found you when you were making rice cooker meals. I now am the proud owner of the three cup Black and Decker! Thanks.

Forgot to add. We always served the meal over rice. So my daughter gave it the name Rice and Sauce.

That sounds so interesting! I will have to look in the book and see if its in there. I don't ever use molasses so that definitely intrigues me!

My mum had that cookbook!! While sadly the book was lost in a cross country move I remember that recipe. We never made it but I remember it. 😃 And I'm with Desmond. There was a reason we never made it. I might try this- minus the plastic cheese and "beefing up" the spices. Do you see what did there Claire? 🤣

What a coincidence. A few months ago when I was cleaning out my Dad's place after his death(RIP Pops!) I found this exact book. I was so well used it was nearly falling apart. Even though I don't have a slow cooker, I decided to keep the book. I'm tempted now to make some of those recipes from my childhood.

I'm so sorry for your loss! The first vintage cookbook I cooked out of was my grandmothers Better Homes and Gardens book after she passed away. I think recipes and food are an amazing way to feel connected to the past, what a gift to have that book!

I think it's a basic recipe, because if you had leftovers you could change it up a bit. I think that is what the idea must be. I just remember my mom changing up leftovers into a whole different meal back when I was a kid. Leftovers was just another meal to do something different with it. Keep in mind, I was born in 1964 and in 1975, I was 11 years old. I just remember that any leftovers were used. Not much food went to waste back then with a family of 7. (5 kids and parents)
@ClaireRisper7 сағат бұрын
This is spot on! I was the only one eating it this week so I had it several days in a row so it wouldn't go to waste. I reheated it and added things! I think adding broth would make it a great soup or spreading it in a wrap would be good! Love this mindset!

I definitely can get down on some Velveeta if it's for dips or something where the meltiness is the most important quality, but in this instance, the processed cheese just didn't work for me!

Claire, I don't know if I have commented before... But all you need to cut onions are some non-RX contact lenses. I am luckily a wearer... One of the only reasons I won't get LASIK is the onion thing. I'm guessing some goggles would help as well. If I cut onions with only glasses on? My eyes will tear up and seal shut practically. 👀

You have definitely commented before! I remember years ago you left me a comment when I had to put my beloved dog down.
