ClamAV - Anti-Virus for Linux - Is It Necessary?

We can use the clamav on Samba file server, to scan infected files. Bootable USB GNU/Linux with clamav is very useful to remove 'unremovable' Windows machine. Thanks for the easy to understand video.

another reason you might want antivirus on Linux is to protect against viruses that might infect your system through a trusted package manager, such as with the NPM flatmap-stream incident that installed a trojan on anyones development machine that had that particular Node JS package as a dependency.

Thank you for the great video. I concur with the fact that it depends on the use case. If you would like the extra layer of security, there're several options out there, and in no way is everyone using Linux, obliged to install them... Great you also included an anti-virus program within these series. Keep up the great work :D!!!

Yeah, same here. When Vista came out and it became public knowledge that it was developed in cooperation with the NSA, I switched to Linux; Ubuntu 5.04...

Is that why it crashed so much? Did the NSA not know how to code back then? Because they seem to know how to now at least judging by Ghidra.

What do you think about the up tick in container use . It is said a container would carry data to run on either or operating system . Do you think this would enhance the risk factor ?

The good part about the command line is that you can use those commands in a bash script if you want to automate things, like having the system automatically shutdown after scanning.

sudo freshclam ERROR: /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log is locked by another process ERROR: Problem with internal logger (UpdateLogFile = /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log).

I had the same problem, but think this is because the daemon is already being used automatically by ClamAV...

You can't update freshclam manually if the daemon to do it automatically (clamav-freshclam.service) is active and running. Stop it and then manual sudo freshclam will work again.

Doesn't it work automatically? And I should check manually every time I insert a flsh drive or receive letters? You said like "if you have other machines on Windows, it's better installing Clam". What if all my friends and relatives have Windows? And if Clam can't work in a background it's gonna be difficult to check everytime manually.

You did pass a bit of setup here. Also, when I run freshclam with sudo, I get this: ClamAV update process started at Sun Jun 7 20:01:49 2020 ERROR: Can't create temporary directory /usr/local/Cellar/clamav/0.102.3/share/clamav/tmp.fccbc Hint: The database directory must be writable for UID 82 or GID 82 ERROR: Update failed.

can you have linux viruses that aren't as in your face as windows viruses? you know viruses that lie dormant like key loggers. when people say they haven't had viruses on linux, i just think you did but you just didn't know about it. but i'm a noob and i don't know enough about linux yet to be convinced otherwise.
