Here is our special arrangement of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Aragorn's Coronation Song - The Oath of Elendil." We hope you enjoy it:)

Your Tolkien songs are always breathtaking but this one was something else entirely. For Aragorn was "an image of the splendour of the Kings of Men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world" and this song tells of how his return is similar to when Elendil and the Faithful were borne out of the West even as the Isle of Numenor fell, and founded the Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor to usher in a new age and yet Aragorns coronation marked the true end of the time of the elves and the beginning of the Dominion of Men. Without the elves or Istari, magic departed from Middle Earth entirely which I have always found to be a bittersweet truth. Thank you as always for another amazing song P.S. I am amazed that the entire song is in I think Quenya right? If not it's Sindarin? Both of which are exceedingly difficult to perform with so wow and thank you!

Aragon, in that his kingship is shown by miraculous healing, is an image of Jesus. 1The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me: he hath sent me to preach to the meek, to heal the contrite of heart, and to preach a release to the captives, and deliverance to them that are shut up. 2To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God: to comfort all that mourn (Isaiah 61:1-2)

@@SATMathReview1234 Not exactly. Tolkien had taken much inspiration from Bible. But his works are works of art and not a copy or a substitute of Bible . Aragorn is not Jesus. Aragorn is a descendant from a long line of kings, first of which was blessed by good Vala (so basically by Eru himself). Aragorn is not a divine entity. He is a mortal Man, as a man should be in Tolkien's thought. And while JRR Tolkien's world is another world that exists apart from this sad reality. It is safe to say that this sad reality is in constant need of men like Aragorn. I imagine, this was crucial part of the original thought behind creating Aragorn.

A little story, before Mr. J.R.R. Tolkien died in the 70s, my grandparents, who were both children of World War I era parents, my great-grandfather being born in 1899, both read Lord of the Rings when it was just hitting regular publication before the new additions and edits and everything else. We lost my grandfather in 1980. Though she never talked about it a lot, I think the story really stayed with her. We would lose her at 86 and 2014. Before then we took her to see the return of the King, she was never big on modern movies, to begin with, but when she heard that little snippet of Aragorn's coronation song, sitting with us. I could hear her audibly gasp, and she sat there quietly with tears rolling down her face. My friends and I were a little shocked and moved as well, being invested in the film series as well as the books. She said “You know your grandfather was one of the men of the West? He’s waiting for me now so that one day we may enjoy our time together in the days of the King ” Coming from a deeply traditional family and knowing what she meant in regard to our faith…. that moment has never left me.

The aunt and uncle I was closest to read the Lord of the Rings aloud to each other many times and were instrumental in my love for the works, as well as for mythology in general. And I do tend to place Tolkien's work as something in the space occupied by Homer and Hesiod. The depth and also the contradictory variations really have a proper mythic feel. That, I think, was what they helped instill in me

That is a good one, I never realized that before! I think the lyrics fit Aragorn regardless since he sings them in the context of renewing the lineage and the promise of Elendil (hence him repeating Elendil's oath), but the fact that they both came from sea is another interesting parallel between Aragorn and Elendil.

That, and I also gotta say that Eowyn singing an adapted piece from Beowulf during Theodred's funeral makes me cry every time. It's just such a beautiful thing, Beowulf was never meant to be sung, it was a spoken alliterative-verse poem yet it is so beautiful when sung and is completely appropriate for the Rohirrim given their, and particularly Tolkien's, Old English connection.

There is a sorrow that comes with old age.. you realize that you are watching the sands run down. All is ending, all the beauty you knew is now fading and there is no returning it. Your beloved has died and gone before you. You grieve for what has been lost and you remember that every generation is exactly as you are, now. We are born, we live for time and think we are immortal... but, then, those are around you grow old and you are too, grow old and the end is coming. For the first time in my life, I feel old. Very old. Time is the great master of everyone and everything, at least, here, on earth. I felt that poignant sorrow as you sung Arwen's part. So much has faded and failed.

I’ve fallen in love with Tolkien’s works in recent years. Every time I hear this song I can’t hold in my emotions. Especially with my religious background, that first part of the song reminds me of Christ coming from the sea asking Peter to have faith and to come to him in the storm.

I am moved to the very core by this. The Oath of Elendil, as simple as it is, truly evokes the primeval power of a mythic reality Tolkien sought. Even if it is a work of fiction, its power is so strong that it has become the stuff of legend.

That was beautiful. Including the Riddle of Strider was a nice touch and having it sung by Arwen really elevated the song to make it about more than just Aragorn (which is kinda the point of his coronation).

My favorite thing about the instrumental is the transition to the ending at 5:10; after Aragorn sang his oath, the scene directly after in the film, he tells the hobbits "My friends, you bow to no one," and that's when this part of the song plays.

@@glenntungay5140 Fetishism of “Western culture” has always been associated with xenophobia, racism, or fascism. There is no such thing as “Western civilization.” It is used as a catch all term for “everything in history that I think is based and also cool.” It is a dog whistle for “Man, we white people made all the coolest stuff, had all the smartest thoughts, and wrote all the epicest books!” You demean yourself.

@@brucecrosby1981 Art from Europe can be awesome. I adore thé cathedrals. But see my previous comment. The man’s dog whistling fascism. And I think that’s the last thing Tolkien would have wanted his songs or writing to be associated with.
