Fun fact: With Scottish kilts, "plaid" is the term for the material of the garment whilst "tartan" is the term for the pattern on it.

When you started talking about how the game tries to be factually accurate I've noticed that it's also accurate in how you advance technologically. In many games you have the entire tree visible and just choose what you want to research next, but in reality we (a lot of the time) don't exactly know what that next stage is, and instead what we do is use our creativity, come up with ideas, and experiment to develop something new and novel, or new ideas come in as a spark of inspiration. The new tech obviously builds on top of another (as does all knowledge) but it's never as simple "ok we have this, now let's do this, and then to this" and the new breakthroughs often come in unexpected moments and places.

Regarding storage, the game has a neat feature where crafting stations will automatically deposit their output in an appropriate storage unit if there is one within 2 tiles. So instead of a general storage building, it's most efficient to cluster each crafting station with its associated storage units. (The exception is food, where you probably want to separate the kitchen for cooking from the pantry for storage, so you can keep your food cold, since food spoilage is temperature dependent.)

Splat, if you want a game where you need to rot flax to make tow, twine, canvas, or rope, check out A Tale In The Desert (ATITD). Set in Ancient Egypt, it's the kind of game where the hours pass you by as you go through all the stages of constructing everything you need to live by the Nile.

You can build a roof one tile out from a wall, so you can 'umbrellas' to keep your storage areas protected from the rain. And, sparks from the fire don't reach the roof, but objects on fire do...

Chemically, bloomeries work by smothering carbon over the iron oxide. Carbon has a stronger bond with oxygen so in order to oxidize the smothered charcoal the oxygen is pulled from the iron oxide. Thus you get iron left behind at the bottom of the pit, but the product is very spongey since the bloomery can't get the iron hot enough to melt. Then of course the carbon can also infuse into the iron alloy to make steel, but bloomery steel is very inconsistent, which is why using Japan as an example they'd separate the high and low carbon iron parts of the bloom then layer them so hard is on a sword's cutting edge, soft is the spine.

For all the people saying "Rimworld is better": the atmosphere is totally different, as you fight against the nature and time, not mechanoids and cannibals. There are people who get irked by Rimworld's raid feature, so Clanfolk is perfect for them. Also, not every colony sim is Rimworld!

Splat, I have to apologize; I live in Sonoma county. Grew up here too. Many moons ago you said that there were goat farms and mutton here as well, and I had never seen that. You are correct, and I was wrong. Learned something about this area I didn't know. The Sonoma aroma is unique (far as I've seen) to the area. The fields near Sebastopol get fertilized and sprayed same time every year, as you said, but I will say a huge part of the stench is the cow farms also. There are a lot of them here still, and if you drive up a certain road from the 101 Hwy towards Sebastopol, it's still *REALLY* obvious where the stench is coming from. It's a mix of both. Thank goodness it isn't all year round.

You spoke a lot about tile roofs being difficult because you need special tools to cut tiles. Wouldn't the tile maker just have two slightly different lengths of tiles, say 6 inches and 7 inches wide, and you just include as many as you need of each width so the total equals the size of your roof?

Speaking of games with accurate crafting - one thats vastly more realistic than this one - did you never play vintage story Splat? Its like minecraft but with hyper realistic complicated survival/crafting systems- all the step RL woulda had back in the day - like 20 steps and weeks to make leather armor with lime in water and scraping and tannin etc- or using bees for beeswax to seal clay jars for winter storage.. Its totally the opposite of user friendly like this game tho- and you will need the wiki a lot. Its a great game for a certain sort of person.
