Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Beautifully done and helpful comparison! You raise a good point - Painting thin is definitely an often overlooked technique. And probably would be very helpful in this setting where you could glaze layers up if you wanted to.

New to liquid charcoal. Very nice in gradient work. I think if you worked on that one tube it might recombine. Seems like like liquid separation.

Love the look of the liquid charcoal. I don’t often use charcoal because it’s so messy. I have tried the water soluble graphite pencils and like them very much!

Your first base layers you actually used the bit of Nitram on your palette. You didn't start with the Schmincke until switching to the Grapeseed Black. It still looks great though!

I love charcoal, it’s immediacy. But….. my willow charcoal is very cold and extremely fragile. I use walnut under drawing some of the time, the cherry pit schmincke might be a solution. I really enjoy seeing your gestural working it is so different from the more mark making approach I was taught. These three tubes of seed charcoal are very pricy, but they do look worth it. I always started any canvas with charcoal, never pencil. I can wipe back charcoal to the merest suggestion and it allows me the freedom to rethink lines very easily. Graphite has a tendency to come forward through paint layers that I don’t like. Others might enjoy this quality…

Maybe the thin one is for shading only. No mistakes with accidental dark spots. 🤷
