In this video I talk a little about the difference between physical perfection and true perfection (maturity), how we often set goals that are obstacles to what we want rather than stepping stones and how we need to learn to live our own priorities.

Someone mentioned on another video today that she no longer felt like she knew what she liked or what was important to her anymore. My biggest piece of advice would be to spend some time thinking about times in your day, or in your life in general, when you feel genuinely happy and at peace. What were you doing then or what contributes to making those times fulfilling? One of those things for me is being in nature with my family. That's why we celebrate my birthday each year by taking the whole family on a nature outing. For Tom, it's very fulfilling to him to share his hobbies with the people he cares about. That's why we have Magic Monday each month and why he and some of the boys go play Magic the Gathering with other guys each week. There are some things that aren't so obvious, but still important. How do you feel when your closet is filled with clean clothes instead of empty hangers? How do you feel when you hear someone pull up in the driveway? How do you feel about cooking dinner? For some of us, those things bring us joy, for others, they're not particularly relevant to our happiness. There's no "right" way to live life. It's all about understanding your own self and your family and focusing your energy toward the things that _you and your family_ care about.

Dearest Andrea, through these videos you continue to SPEAK LIFE. This is such a timely word. You were and are a gift to the world. I can imagine as your girls grow that they will have Mom's wisdom helping them along into adulthood. Some girls have their mothers, but no one is sharing the wisdom. Listening to Andrea speak on the "someday" when she will reflect back on her life and priorities is so bittersweet. What a beautiful life well lived. ♡

I love it when you speak of deep things :) It took me losing my health to realise just how much we, as people of the western world, are being pushed into thinking that physical perfection really is the only goal of life. But, in losing my health, I discovered that it's my inner me that means so much more than the outer. I look back on my childhood, which was one of 7 children, to parents that were considered poor, but my Mum gave me the most wonderful gifts she could have done - the urge to learn about the world about me. The love of reading. The love of Nature. The love of family and friends. We lived such simple lives, really, and were always happy with whatever we had, whether it was something really simple, or in the achievement of personal goals and, although I lost that for a while as I grew up and left home, it's such a joy now to be able to cherish those little things again :) When I came across your channel for the first time, watching you and your wonderful family brought that joy of childhood back to me, and I'm just so very glad I came across your vlog :)

You are a very sweet soul! I began watching your channel because my daughter has six kiddos 👶. You gave me great ideas on a big family, I only have two children. I am a huge fan of substance over appearance !!! But, everyone has a big but, right hahaha, I am sixty-three now with health issues. I will never be a health nut but I am now health conscious. I spend more time managing my health so that I can do the things of life that make me happy, like being with my grandkids. Not every day is a good day but I can read to the kids, or watch a movie or play a board game when my energy is not there. But, there’s that but again, I want to take walks with my kiddos and go to pumpkin patches and cook a big meal and have energy for the day. My daughter is so busy with her family, I encourage her to take a little time for herself, to eat a healthy meal or two, get a little exercise not to look good but to feel good. I find at sixty-three balance is key it is beneficial. I lost my mom when I was thirty-one and it was devastating for many years. I guess today I just wanted to give you some motherly advice in a tender and hopefully sweet way. Ive been taking your advice for years!😊. Oh and I homeschooled my kids and my daughter homeschools hers also! God bless you and your family!!!

Oh, yes, we definitely need to take care of ourselves! I'd like to point out that everything you recommend is taking a healthy action. (Eating well, walking, etc.) Tom and I have spent a lot of time making observations about our different grandparents and the ones who still engage in life (getting out and walking, helping others, etc.) clearly have better health. (Ironically, excluding a set of grandparents that died 30 years ago, the most physically active, service-oriented grandparent we've had was the first one to die, so you never know...) I think we see eye to eye one this; get out there and start living! Don't put obstacles in your way (like achieving a number on a scale) before you can get out there with the grandkids. I also think it's _much_ easier to eat well when you stop worrying about that same number on the scale. I think many of us moms abstain from eating solid, nutritious meals because we want to lose weight, but then succumb to hunger eventually and reach for whatever is closest. (I was 31 when my mom passed away, too. Next to Tom, she was my best friend. It's hard losing your mom. I'm so thankful for children and the ability to have that relationship with the next generation!)

I always love your wisdom and am so thankful for these videos Andrea. This hit home on so many points for me as a mom and wife, even just as a woman. I can relate to the physical imperfections taking over because I have a chronic joint disorder that has always caused me immense pain. I spent years going to all sorts of doctors and therapies only to realize that when I finally stopped allowing it to consume my life, it stopped feeling so severe and debilitating. That is such an eye opener. Thank you for sharing your heart in such a vulnerable and real way. You remove boundaries and just share your life and thoughts with us and that is a much bigger blessing to others than you could ever imagine.

Andrea, I really enjoyed this video today and needed to hear it. I have undergone a similar maturing process in my thinking about things but the temptation, or habit, to think the other way never truly disappears. Partially because we are so steeped in it, and partially because some of my life's little pleasures are along the lines of outward stuff, like prettying my home and having my organisation how I want it etc. It is vanity as well. But when those things aren't serving the purpose of making me enjoy what I'm doing, it means I am overdue to focus on what is actually important. I am in a time of transformation at the moment and keeping my focus on 3 things is good advice. I will mull this over today as I do the work I need to do. Thanks.

So thankful for you and you sharing your wisdom! I so needed to hear this today. Just being reminded that through Christ, I have received a greater grace. That grace is something I have to extend to myself (rather than frustration at the lack of "perfection" in a goal I don't even care about) and I'm called to extend that to others. What a sweet reminder of the grace we have been extended.

Really love this video! For the last 4 years I have suffered with TMJ after my jaw popped out of place while I was eating a carrot. I have often found myself feeling regret over eating that carrot and then I worry about what the future holds and what will be the next thing to fall apart that I don't appreciate enough right now. Anyways, it's great to hear your perspective on health and just learning to be content with your circumstances, whatever they may be. I also sometimes ask myself why I am so often feeling so cranky when I really truly have a life that I love.

Dear Andrea...this little chat was truly profound, and could be life changing for many! Your wisdom (for your age) is astounding. I am 56, and it has taken me much longer to come to the same conclusions in my life. I love what you said: "If it doesn't really matter, why should I care so much?" And your thoughts on waiting for happiness, when it is already right under your nose...such wisdom...such insight...God has truly gifted you. On the subject of obstacles getting in the way of our happiness, may I ask you a question? My personal obstacle to happiness is not material in nature, but my heartache over watching my adult children suffer from poor choices they have made in life. I am trying to be happy, but whenever my thoughts turn toward them, my joy fades to sorrow. I know that your precious babies are all still safely underneath your wings, but would you have any thoughts to share for the grief parents feel over lost children? The pain is like no other. I am a Christian, and will always have that joy that no one can ever take away, but sadly, I am not happy. Anything you might have to share on this subject would be greatly appreciated. My prayers are always with you for a healthy pregnancy and baby girl. I love you all, Pam

I haven't reached that stage of life, but I'm close with others who have and I think it's true... there isn't much greater heartache. It reminds me of Jesus when he said, "Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how I've longed to gather you together like a hen gathers her chicks, but you were unwilling." He knows the pain you feel. One of the things I meant to touch on is how easy it is to put an impossible ideal as an obstacle in our lives. My dad has struggled for years with feeling like he can’t be happy without my mom. The trouble is, she’s never coming back. Death is death. The day comes when we have to accept that this pain is always going to be there, but we can still have joy. I have moments when I miss my mom. I sometimes have a cry about it. But then I turn around and look forward to all God has for me to do. I’m not sure if that’s helpful or not; I guess the point is that sorrow and joy can co-exist. Don’t let sorrow have more than its share of your attention. Like most things in life, the only thing to do is acknowledge that we have no control and to put it in God's hands. There's a parent I know who was so adamant about turning his child around that eventually his son decided to terminate their relationship. I was very inspired by a story once of a woman who, while she didn't in any way express approval of her son's life choices, she still showed him a great deal of love. Her actions of loving him even though he knew how she felt about what he was doing eventually brought him to repentance. As long as someone is alive, there is hope. He cares for your children even more than you do and speaks to them in ways you’ll never be able to and calls to them in His time. You can trust that His will always wins out. Either God is sovereign or He is not.

With eight children "being kids," home schooling, YouTubing, cooking, cleaning...and the list goes on and on; it is a WONDER that you can think on such a deep level, Andrea! I want to add you to the great philosophers hall of fame...can we call you, "Andr-astotle?" I have never known anyone with a gift like yours! And to be using it for God's glory is even more wonderful. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my question so graciously and sensitively, Andrea. I sought out help from a Christian counselor (one visit) a few years ago, but they were not able to offer any advice, sadly. And yet, your answer to me was so diplomatic, comprehensive and Faith based; and touched my heart on so many levels. Amazing...just amazing. As so many of your viewers have expressed in the past, I, too, wish we were neighbors, and could fellowship together in person over coffee and those famous cinnamon rolls! But God bless you for sharing so much of yourself via this channel...I can feel your love all the way out here in NH, and I send mine back to you in WY. So on those days when uploading another video is such a struggle, with everything else you need to tend to, and yet you do it; please always know that this viewer's heart always jumps for joy to see you again, and truly appreciates all the hard work and discipline it takes to film and edit, etc. May God bless you above all you could ask or think, dear friend

Thank you Andrea for this discussion! Sometimes it just takes hearing what really matters in life , to start believing it again. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the inconsequential "goals" we set for ourselves, until something happens in life that reminds us what really is of true importance. For myself, it's more relevant, that I spend quality time with my children, than having everything around us be " perfect". Because in the end we can't take perfection with us, it's the memories we leave behind that matter most.

I appreciate you and your videos so much! I am so thankful of you and how you open your heart and home to your viewers. My husband and I recently joined a new church after leaving a heavily legalistic church. We were completely excommunicated from everyone we knew because we stood up for salvation through Christ alone instead of through works. This places me in a season of life where I'm building new relationships, but do not yet know any women personally enough to have conversations like in this video.

Leaving your church is _so_ difficult. Tom and I left our church right before Judah was born. It was very stressful. Many members of the church were also members of our family. In addition to being a church family, Tom and I ran the Christian school in the church so we were there 6 our of 7 days a week. It was a huge loss, but we couldn't abide any more with teachings in the church that were getting to be more and more of the focus. I cried every day for two months after we left. I totally get what you're feeling! It's so hard starting over, but I think when we do what we know is right, God blesses us and the day comes when we can't imagine ever having made a different decision. This is a new beginning!

I am always inspired by your talks. I agree that your thoughts would inspire and help people. You never fail to amaze me with your insight. Please never feel shy about sharing. I often wonder how you were raised to become the you you are. I wanted to thank you for the clarity and simple peace you often bring into my life by sharing yours.....The outside is not who we are it is a vessel like a seashell. The only time I am concerned about weight ect. is if it makes me feel unhealthy. We each know our bodies. A elderly woman once told me a gentleman she knew kept marrying model type women only to find himself dismayed and alone. One day he told her I always went for the shiny bright candy box then realized it was empty. lol You my dear glow with beauty. Blessing to you as you continue to teach Gods love.

I have a friend who would never admit that she wants to be thin but has always been a "health nut" (I say that very lovingly) and she's stayed thin just because she excludes so many foods from her diet. One day, she discovered she was gaining a little weight and it was very distressing to her. Her husband reassured her that he _liked_ it. He said, "What would you rather snuggle with- a board or a pillow?" Good point. :)

I understand what you are saying about weight. My motivation for losing some weight, since I am in my 50’s, is to keep mobile. My goal is to stay in my home. If I lose my mobility or am a fall risk, it would be harder to stay home. Just something to think about.

Yes, it's not the goal... it's the reason behind it that it so important to evaluate.

I am also on a path of losing weight..the reason behind.. Is health..Fibromyalgia, High Blood pressure, Huge family history of heart disease (I am just on the border of developing heart disease myself), Huge family history of diabetes..And mobility.. I don't care about my actual weight just that the risks go way down.

Even when you don't feel like you have all the right words to say to express what you are thinking you manage to be so inspirational. You spoke directly to many issues that I have been working on with myself. Thank you for opening up for us, I believe God is definitely using you to pass some wisdom on to others. On another note... I know I asked if I could message you. My brain is just on overload. When I was going to write something, I started to question if I even had anything worth saying that needed me to take your time. So, I don't know if you even remember, but just in case, hopefully I will get around to it! :)

Another great video! I love all of your videos and would love to see a few Bible study videos. Jesus teaches us not to judge one another because it's not our job. So I think the majority of the comments are very positive, and maybe some of the negative ones are from their personal weaknesses. I love that you are still going forward with these videos!

I so understand what you are saying. My #1 goal for many years was to lose weight. I tried and tried and tried and always failed. I finally decided I was never going to look like that 20 year old again and to be happy with the way I am today. As long as I am healthy, the number on the scale is irrelevant. That was a big burden lifted from my shoulders and caused me to lose 10 lbs. without even trying. I think maybe that 10 lbs. was a lot of stress I put on myself lol. Another problem I had when I was younger was wanting to always wear the latest clothing style, jewelry style or hairdo style, but I didn't really have the money to do so. I finally realized I needed to be more concerned with my spiritual well-being than my physical. I enjoy this scripture at 1 Peter 3:3-4: "Do not let your adorning be external-the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear-but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious." God doesn't care what our physical appearance may be; he always looks at our inward appearance, and that is what I should be striving to achieve. Thank you for a most enjoyable chat today. Carla
