Hi Carly, thank you for sharing your expertise, its greatly appreciated. A small tip for those ‘biters’ I used to play with a small piece of baking paper (paper to be used in the oven for pie etc) on top of my bottom teeth, its easier on the gums. Also used to scrape a groove with my upper front teeth on top of my mouthpiece, I used patches but they never last very long. So a month ago I went with an old mouthpiece and a strip of 600 grain sanding paper to the bathroom. Used the mouthpiece as a sanding block and sanded my 2 front teeth down to a level for the mouthpiece to fit comfortably without digging grooves. This really worked out well. And now also following you advice and playing loooong tones every and every day before starting on scales and all the rest. It all comes together. Yesterday went to the dentist for the yearly check up. My dentist (lady) is really picky, I didn’t get scolded. No comments whatsoever. So..job well done. (Hehe) Any way, have a nice weekend. Greetings form Norway.

Hi Erwin, thank you for sharing your tips! I have never had my teeth filed, but some of my students have had their dentists gently file their teeth after getting braces off...

@@callyclarinet Of course grinding down maybe 0,2 mm is personal, no one has the same teeth. My mouthpiece fits and sits and feels much better on my upper 2 teeth. Should have done this eons ago. But better late than never. You cant really see either i've sanded them a bit. Those mouth patches are also kinda expensive. Now with a punch and hammer I get 2 patches from one. The patches are much smaller but have no effect on embochure. images.app.goo.gl/LiFDzUhTWLB6jSCfA

Great tips! The last couple days I've tried practicing just a few minutes with double lip embouchure. Then after switching back to single lip the clarion range seemed so much more effortless. Does that make sense? Do you know why?

Great tip!!! I think double lip prevents us from biting and forces us to use our air properly. I've tried this before too and it really helps! Thanks for sharing!

Double lip makes everything simpler. I start beginners all the time double lip and it has worked out well over the years. Fully engaging the upper lip helps the lower lip, tongue, and corners of mouth to assume their proper roles more easily and naturally. It is good for everyone to do some playing double lip unless ta short top lip long top teeth make it too difficult. Some of the most admired clarinetists of the 20th century (such as Harold Wright) played double lip full time. Many of us use double lip as part of our daily practice, even if we are mostly single lip players.

How can I fix my tonguing? For example, whenever I do it it sounds very aggressive and that prevents me to play faster music, is there a way to fix that? To make it sound smoother? Are there any exercises that I can try to do?

It's hard to give advice without hearing you play, but I would say make sure you are tonguing off the reed (not the roof of the mouth), make sure you are blowing enough air, and make sure that when your tongue does make contact with the reed it touches the reed very lightly, like touch of a feather. I hope that helps! Let me know if you figure out how to fix it!

(solved)I saw some plastic reeds from the music shop Tom Lee, what's your opinion on that, Cally?

My problem is getting notes to speak when playing piano. If I give more air it is no longer piano.

Great comment... Hmm... I will add this topic to my list of future videos, thank you for the idea! In the meantime, I have better luck at piano when I make sure my air is supported and embouchure is set before I start the note. I know this won't help as much as a demonstration, but I will try to get a video up some time in late February or early March!

Try to push LESS AIR through the mouthpiece but make the air FASTER. That may not be strictly accurate in terms of what is actually happening but most people get good results conceptualizing it this way. A long tone the decrescendos from loud to soft can be a good way to work on this. If the air speed is sufficient the tone won't "fuzz out" and lose focus. It is possible (and fun!) to decrescendo all the way to nothing while maintaining a good sound.
