Clark is probably one of the most interesting criminal of the nordic countries Involved in all from car-thefts in his pre-teens to narcotics sells in the nineties, his track record of crime overall is not in any way what could be seen as impressive. The most interesting thing about Clark is his infamous skill of verbal communication and charisma, coupled with the personality of a textbook class pathological liar. Clark has ever since the start of his criminal career inflated his reputation, claiming excessive triumphs during robberies that do not represent realities if what he accomplished, claiming connections to well known criminal cases that he by no way could be connected to, and creating a mythos surrounding him as a mastermind criminal. In truth Clark is seen as a below mediocre criminal who is known to have botched heists, is considered a cowardly character by other criminals (including Jan Olsson), and has been ridiculed by fellow criminals along his career. Clark is in popular culture still mostly known by the constant bragging and ego-tripping he indulges in to this day. Among the claims he has made are to be the "real" mastermind behind the Norrmalmstorg (even if sources have confirmed that before his transport from the prison to the bank, Clark was terrified by the situation as he had no idea who the bankrobber was, and later has beens seen as a idle oaf compred to Olsson within the bank) and that he succeeded in "smuggling out a considerable sum of cash" from the bank during and/or after the days of the hostage drama. This is considered a myth by many, as the rumor started from an unknown source that a large sum of swedish kronor in the form of bills had gone missing during the drama, detected only later when the bank resumed normal working conditions. Sources vary on the subject and what truth is to be found today has been tainted by popular belief. This could still technically be true, and a interviewer making a documentary featured on the DVD release of the afformentioned movie "Norrmalmstorg", interviewing Clark in prison takes up the subject with him, and gets a most excited reaction from him. The interviewer mentions the theory that Clark realised that a internal postage system was used by the bank, with envelopes containing a wide array of contents like paperwork and probably bank receipts etc. were stored as outgoing mail. The theory asserts that Clark filled envelopes with cash from within the bank, added a postal stamp and adressed the envelopes to different recipients, and as the bank resumed normal working conditions, employees unknowingly sent out Clarks mail with the rest of the outgoing mail, thus him getting away with a considerable sum of money. During the interview Clark is extatic by the theory, neighter confirming or denying it, only saying "You are on the right way with that!" to the interviewer. Still many if not most legitimate sources find the theory implausible, and doubt Clark would be clever enough to pull it off. They instead refer to what Olsson had noted at some occations, seeing Clark kneeled down in a corner, his trousers down and depositing kronor bills into another type of depository. Most of Clarks claims are not of realistic nature, some outrageous, others implausible, but the charismatic crook has been courted by crazed female fans and basically become a figure within modern swedish folklore. He has accomplished a lot during his many years of imprisonment. Among other things creating better conditions for convicts, boosting cultural standards of prisons in sweden to an extent and also taken a career merit of journalism. Some interviews of Clark are found on KZbin, most in swedish and without subtitles, if you can find material of Clark it is worth viewing even without context. Clark was and is a fantastically perfect example of body language and eye movement by a not allways truthful individual. And he is a character if nothing else.

Jan was never a cold man. He had a heart and a soul. Why do think his hostages became so calm? And then to do his time, get married, have children, work, have his own business, and raise 2 sons. 1 not so good and the other to become an Officer of the Law. Jan made his mistakes and paid for them. He knew he was wrong. But, he changed and for the better. God Bless him.

Funny piece of trivia: they have guide tours to Norrmalmstorg were they talk about the robbery. The bank is now a clothes store. One time Clark Olofsson was in the area and he came up to a guide group. The guide and the group didn’t know who he was at first. After they understod that he was Clark Olofsson the guide said that he was going to quit because nothing will ever top that experience. Also, Jan-Erik is more know as Janne. Not jus Jan.
@TheCrimeReel4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bella, thats a great story. Imagine the surprise if Clark turned up at the tour. Janne is still pronounced the same isnt it ? I did check on a website that told me it was the same

The Crime Reel You’re welcome, sir. Jan and Janne is not pronounced the same. Jan is pronounced with a long A. Janne has 2 N in it so the A is pronounced short. You also pronounce the E in the end. It is okay if you didn’t know this before. I just thought I would tell that in Sweden we call him Janne Olsson.

I have Stockholm Syndrome for these men, and I wasn't even alive when this occurred. Classic antiheros. The fact that Jan had a history of showing kindness whilst committing a crime (i.e. the heart medication incident). Then knowing he ultimately turned his life around further cements the idea of this troubled, yet redeemable archetype.

This case is fascinating! I'll definitely be looking out for the upcoming doc. From those I've spoken to that have committed armed robbery, treating people you encounter on a job with respect is the standard and sign you're not a scumbag. Getting people drinks, helping the elderly get seated, and talking calmly with till workers and explaining that you don't want to hurt anyone is behavior cons expect of each other. Morality within crime is a really interesting topic to me, and I think helps remind me that most criminals aren't monsters at all, just people in bad situations. Fantastic video as always, I've known about this case for a long time but not all the details you find for your vids! Definitely made a bad day better.

@@asfdasdfds because they don't want to hurt people. They need money and desperation will drive people to extremes, and makes people easy targets for gangs or other criminals. Things aren't as one dimensional as you'd like to believe, I know simplicity makes it easier to digest but it's not an accurate portrayal of reality. Things don't happen in a vacuum, there's always more to a case than just the criminal act itself, that's why these videos are so interesting.

@@TheCrimeReel not specifically criminals but I used to do voluntary work with citizens advice and welfare rights as well as some local homelessness charities, and there's a lot of crossover with criminal history and people in bad situations. I'd love to go back to it if my health permits, or even work directly with probation services. Some people's life experiences have made me cry for them after an appointment; better social, mental health, and addiction services could have prevented a lot of trauma and harm. I learned that very few people are "born bad", most offenders have experienced terrible things and people are often the product of their environment.

Hello Crime Reel! 💛💛 Way to go Kevin! I’ll have to check out that movie with Ethan. Ya know at least this fella had some heart. He didn’t kill his hostages and he sure could have. Sounds like he served his time and turned his life around for the better. That takes guts. Good for him! Thanks for the video! ❤️💜💚

One could argue that Olsson himself was a victim of Stockholm Syndrome in that he was under the thrall of Olofsson. Note that he regrets his attachment to Olofsson just as the hostages did not identify with their sympathy for the thieves once their ordeal was over. This is by far the most interesting of any of the cases you have presented, Mr. Reel. Thank you for this - I did not know any of the details of the story before. Also, the Petty Crime segment is a stroke of genius. On behalf of all the petties everywhere, thank you.

So pleased you enjoyed this case Lara, and I love it when people havent heard anything about a case before As for the Petty Crime, the animals came looking for me and talked me into it lol

Very interesting! I never knew of this particular case referring to ”Stockholm Syndrome.” Patti Hurst during the 70’s another bank robbery is another story related to Stockholm Syndrome.

Hi CR, I remember watching this ! Patty Hurst was diagnosed with Stockholm when she was kidnapped and helped rob a bank ! There is a movie I watched in the 70’s With Linda Blair and Martin Sheen that dips in the Stockholm! Thank you ☮️🌼🐝safe

Its an interesting condition. This is not the only example , as also in the early 70s there was the case of:Patty Hirst, the daughter of an american newspaper tycoon who paid a million dollars for her release. She did not return to her family, instead she joined her kidnappers.

@@TheCrimeReel you should do a video on the Patty Hearst kidnapping. It's fascinating how quickly she went from pleading to her parents to fork up the ransom to "kill the fascist pig" and robbing a bank. The ultimate Stockholm syndrome.

Yes . You are quite right Elizabeth . That case was also a very good example of the Stockholm Syndrome . I believe she became very emotionally attached to her kidnappers . I think it was in the time of the American president Jimmy Carter .

Ah one of most fascinating cases, good psychological insight and very nice episode overall. Interestingly enough i too would feel safe inside a safe during police siege of bank. It has very visually assuring doors (big bulky chunk of metal), thick walls and is built sturdy.

You had a great idea featuring Kiera and any positive promotion of the rescue and saving of shelter dogs and cats and other animals is to be highly commended! Please keep positively promoting the rescuing of shelter animals and hopefully more and more will become interested and involved and this disgusting and ugly stigma of killing innocent helpless animals can eventually be eliminated .
