In this video I restored an old Coffee Grinder, made by 'Clarks & Co.' in England
Age: I guess it´s age to 80-100 years
Restoring time: - around 3 weeks
Facts:
This beauty was made in England, and came with a 'Japanning' Finish. Since there were threads everywhere, i wasn´t able to restore the knob in its original way.
Techniques/materials:
For this restoration I chose two main techniques: hot bluing and 'Japanning'.
I chose hot bluing, because it´s the most natural way of bluing, without using strong chemicals. Why? Because the coffee beans get in contact with the grinder, so I wanted to have it in food grade quality.
'Japanning' is a technique, close to powdercoating, but ways older. You mix tar with turpentine and linseed oil, let it sit for a week, brush it on the bare metal and put it in the oven. After baking in 5 steps the result is pretty resistant and deep black.
I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!
If you want to support my channel hit the like, leave a comment, subscribe and share my work. It helps a lot! :-) Thanks for watching!

at 2:23 the inclusion of the OOPS moment and showing the handle was threaded and not pressed on is cool, the end result is awesome, im impressed that you did include the oops moment as it makes these restorations more real as it shows that we all can make errors.

I am not only late to the party I am late to a party where I am mentioned and you use my japanning recipe. I am ashamed of my tardiness and hope you can forgive me one day. Let's call the flour, vinegar, salt mixture devil's dough, because the stench is sickening and the mess just as diabolical. Your restoration is wonderful. Your given information is more and better than ever and your balance between perfection and preservation of history has museum quality. Thank you my Christiano Bronaldo ❤.

I think the white stuff is dried up, old yeasts. Since coffee powder is hygroscopic, it's an excellent substrate for common yeasts to grow on. Left alone, when they finally consumed all of the coffee powder they die and dry up, leaving that white patina (which is quite common on old kitchen tools, and also usually not dangerous for human health). Great job on the restoration, and the video editing as well.

By chance, when asking about how do they cleaned the door knob, i was told the name of the mixture, it was "engrudo limpia-bronce", or somewhat translated as bronze-cleaning smear. Anyway that was in South America, it may have a proper name here also, but dont know it yet.

Doesn't the heat treatment of the hardened parts soften the steal? In some other restoration videos I saw there was sometimes the explanation "can not hot blue it, but must be cold bluing it because it is hardened". How can you tell if it is hardened and what temperature it can stand without losing the hardness?
@misterpatina
@misterpatina 8 ай бұрын
It softens, when the metal cools down slowly. But youre right in the detail: it doesnt got the same hardness, as it had before. I 'just' did the filing test before and after: the file slipped over the metal and didnt file off anything :-) I guess loosening some hardness begins at around 200 degrees celsius, but iam open to be corrected here.
