"They can build amazing stuff. So why when it comes to cars, are they so completely hopeless?" The Malaise era is where it can't get any further than that question. It took us DECADES to recover from the gas crunch. The Japanese cleaned the floor with us in the 80s, and our recovery in the 90s was completely overshadowed by the rise of JDM tuner culture. 9/11 turned all the money towards military production, and just when we were finding our footing again in 2008, the economy imploded. GM sold its soul to the feds, Chrysler was flogged off to the Italians, and Ford survived by sacrificing Mercury and its entire styling department.

@@RandomCarGuy17 let me remind you of the 800 hp demon. That doesn't violate smog regulations? Make smaller engines for crying out loud. You know, like the rest of the world.
@RandomCarGuy17
@RandomCarGuy17 2 жыл бұрын
@@sasl6987 That Demon has more modern technology used to make the engine qualify for our regulations while keeping it at 800hp. That and the car was built for something completely different from what the Buick LaSabre is used for, just to be sort-of comfy car built for being driven around versus the Demon being used to set fast 1/4 times at a drag strip. There's also actually a benefit to why we have detuned, bigger engines versus just extracting power out of smaller engines. It sometimes can be more reliable to go with a bigger engine not using all of its power. That's part of why Ford Crown Victorias could last so long, they use less powerful modular engines. EDIT: I looked it up. When extracting more power out of a smaller engine, you're typically increasing the compression and putting more stress out of that engine. Versus just using a bigger engine to make the same power, which won't have to work as hard, thus lasting longer. It's also cheaper in terms of engineering cost to use the bigger engine.
@memillionthdoot4436
@memillionthdoot4436 2 жыл бұрын
@@RandomCarGuy17 I (opinionatedly, not factually) call BS on reliability for engines. They’re bigger because we love down-low torque. We would switch to small engines if we weren’t so enamored with 400lbft of torque at idle and nothing else. That, and also a way higher production of towing-capable vehicles here make that almost a necessity. That being said, you’re right.

American cars made between 1976 and the early 1990s suffered from a huge horsepower problem: They were required to be equipped with a catalytic converter. Catalytic converter technology at the time was basically like stopping up your tailpipe with a giant cork.
@Sams88990
@Sams88990 Жыл бұрын
The issue wasn't emissions, it was the way we handled it. Decreasing compression ratios, increasing quench, choking the heads, and an even more unnecessary obsession with swirl ports, along side a few other poor engineering practices, are what made it horrible. Check the value of 1990 Jaguar catalytic converters (pre and post) and hp/cid, vs a 1990 anything American with the same values.

Except that theory doesn't work. Cars in the UK where I live ALSO have catalytic converters, to this day. My BMW Diesel from 2017 has an EGR and a DPF, essentially taking exhaust gases expelled from the engine BACK into the engine to be burned off again to lower emissions, in turn this clogs up the intake manifold and causes carbon build up in the engine intake ports.... Yet the germans still managed to get 313 bhp from that 3 litre straight six car that I have, and it does 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and has all wheel drive - AND it's a big "sedan" car... not some little pocket rocket.

The thing about the Starion, actually in japanese there is no "L" sound. So for japanese saying (or spelling in japanese) foreign words that have an L sound, they use an R sound instead. So Stallion in japanese would be スタリオン (Sutarion). So what Clarkson said there about it being a translation error could actually be true.

@@V-C137 It wouldn't really be "prease" though, it would be "purisu" to fit into Japanese orthography. All Japanese words have a, i, u, e or o as their base, and then they build off of that (ka ki ku ke ko, na ni nu ne no, pa pi pu pe po etc.). These are the only sounds that exist naturally

I have heard that the lack of horsepower comes all the way from the Muscle car era. If my memory is correct, there was this weight-to-power ratio, according to which it shouldn't be less than 10:1 - 1 hp per 10 pounds. Hence, if a car is 3500 pounds, the power shouldn't exceed 350 horsepower.
@rich7447
@rich7447 Жыл бұрын
It's more that US cars are built for low end torque and don't spin nearly as fast as small European over square engines. Since HP = (torque x RPM)/5,252 the peak horsepower on a lower revving engine will be lower even if the peak torque is the same or higher. For instance the Cummins 6.7 standard output in the Ram HD makes 850 lb ft/1,156 nm but only makes 370 hp.

Actually, American english is the original pronunciation of english. The brits adopted their iconic accents to sound more sophisticated in the 1800s, thus Americans preserved the original pronunciation. (Though some cultures did go in new directions with it, such as ebonics or the classic southern drawl)
@Arsenic71
@Arsenic71 7 ай бұрын
@@boogaloobender3462 You might be referring to the Irish accent, which is closer to American than British in terms of pronounciation. At the end of the day English is a subgroup of the West Germanic languages, so in essence they're all speaking German (😉😁). Interesting point though. The written language has certainly been simplified (and in some cases made more logic) in the US.
