Clash Royale's History of the Mirror

The Mirror is a very unique card in Clash Royale. It is the only card that does follow the typical level scale, only card that doesn't have a set elixir cost, and only card that cannot be played first! A very unique concept, despite it's function to be just copying other cards. This video will take a deep dive into Mirror's function, history, and the many impacts it's had on Clash Royale History.

Very interesting you mention the Mirror Piglets deck I would like to call it, it was in 8% of all decks played in Clash Royale at that time because it was the CRL 20-win Challenge and everybody and their mother was using this overpowered deck which literally beat every other deck except other Mirror decks. The stats backed it up as the best deck in the game, as the deck with the most 20 wins. Then the rest is history and Mirror was the pinnacle of the meta for the CRL 20 win challenge.

I have a couple of ideas for a mirror rework Make the mirror 0.5+ elixir. It’s not like we haven’t seen smaller increments of elixir, the E Golem gives 0.5 elixir. It would sort of work like mirror on release. It takes +1 elixir, but would jump up 0.5 elixir. Or Bring back the +2 level, but make the mirror a champion. Champions already break the card cycle and are always some of the better cards in every meta. Functionally, it just removes the need to balance a >3 card cycle.

Making it a Champion would KILL the card in my opinion. Epics are already hard to get consistently and specifically the one you want, much less a rarity two tiers above that that is split between five cards and requires a much higher arena to even begin unlocking. The +0.5 elixir is interesting though. However, I propose a counter rework: +1.5 level increase with the same +1 elixir cost.

you could make it so that the mirror card only adds up 1/10ths of the cards normal cost. this mean skeletons would cost 1.1, while triple musqueteer would cost 9.9. the big problem with the mirror is that currently, playing it with cheaper cards is just not worth it, you must pay at the worst DOUBLE the normal cost, just to get 1level, it's just not worth it even if the right situation arises. now you can do that, without getting absurd negative elixir trade that you normally wouldn't get

Bcs midladder players usually use cards that they have an easy mechanic and doesn't require a special timing or placement. That's why sc keeps witch and wizard in a bad spot. Witch is kinda tough to balance but wizard have a great potential to be viable

I think a good change to the mirror would be to have it work like the imitator from plants vs zombies. Instead of mirroring your last placed card, you can choose which card you want to be mirrored before a match. That way you both don’t have to fully cycle to the card and you can play a different card in between them.

Although is an unique idea, sadly it would make the mirror a spam tool, in pvz the imitator is commonly used to have a copy of a strong instant plant like cherry bomb which can disappear a wave in a blink of an eye. So it could end up taking away its versatility, boosting toxic/bait decks and making spell cycling/spam a topic again

Personally I'd just make mirrors +1 cost into +0.5 because this concept (of gaining 0.5 elixir) already exists in the case of defeating the small elixir blobs(elixir golem) .So it wouldn't take a huge overhaul of the game and buff the card similarly to what you suggested.

I feel like a good project down the line would be a history of buildings and the way they've been perceived in this game. None of them on their own are nearly as interesting as something like Witch, but there are certainly trends and eras among them. Like how 2016 was dominated by spawners, or how just about every meta picks exactly one building to be on top and used far more than the others.

One of the ways I could see Mirror getting buffed is by making the number of extra level dependant on the elixir cost of the mirrored card Because using 1 extra elixir for a 1 elixir card is essentially doubling the elixir cost while using it on a card with like 7 elixir doesn't increase the cost by that much relatively What I think could be a good rework is something like adding 4/3/2/1 levels for 1/2-3/4-5/6+ elixir cards, but that would require adding level 17 cards

36:43 i agree this is a huge overhaul for one card. My idea I've had since the toxic mirror meta is, based on the fact each upgrade is 10% hp and dmg, just experiment w putting it somewhere in between 10% (1 level) and 20% (2 levels.) It probably wouldn't work out that 15% is the precise number but giving it a boost to 12 or 13% extra hp and dmg would be a steady buff, and if it's not good, try 14, 15, 16% better mirrored stats. Until E giant and the GS SK GY mirror deck, i was a huge fan of the mirror buff and i still somewhat miss it. As in the video, the hype to see what would result of it was rly fun and exciting to discover interactions etc

Also the +2 level too strong, but the 3 card cycle was fun; Is a bit annoying to fight, granted, but the flexibility it grants is quite enjoiable even to fight. Honestly, I don't think overhauling elixar for one card is a viable solution. I propose the mirror costing 0 elixar, but reduce the card level by one. It'll have more synergy with cards that are less level dependent like the tornado, freeze, e-spirit. If that is too strong then reduce the card level by 2. I really liked the post EGiant nerf and mirror meta. So many unique decks and bizzare playstyles made the game fun. My favorite card to mirror is actually the fisherman, it allows having a tank be in a constant loop lol.

im assuming you mean it cost literally nothing no matter what card and in which case that would literally be the best card in the games history lmao. 0 elixir and you get a rocket. even if you make it 2 or even 3 levels lower its still one shotting so many things for it being free. and it literally makes ur deck 7 cards since the mirror is free so if you run a champion you get 2 card cycle...would also be absolutely insane on defense. imagine just throwing a golem down at ur bridge to defend urself. doesnt matter if its 4 levels lower a golem is still buying you atleast like 2-3 elixir worth of time for the low low price of free. also goes without saying that you almost just get a free win with its offensive abilities lmao. as soon as double elixir hits you just win. throw down monk and run 2 1 elixir cards then gg. just throw down egiant or golem or something then just rocket mirror cycle and you win. the mirrored rocket is still one shotting witches and what not even when 4 levels lower. either the card levels would have to be so low that its literally only possible to do anything with freeze rage and nado or the card levels are too high so spell cycle is unbeatable and you cant possibly lose on defense cause you can fr just throw down a tanky wincon like golem then mirror it then thats probably gonna buy you like 15+ elixir of time. from there just rocket that shit or just rocket and mirror rocket off rip and just about everything in the game except for tanky wincons is dead.

My solution would to be to mirror the opponents card. Since most cards can counter your opponents card if it was 1 level higher. This can be used for tons of plays since it also allows pretty much a rotating card in your deck. It can also disencourage using spells as much since you know that the spell can be mirrored and can be even stronger.

ive always thought that they should just make it mirror the last card played on the battlefield at the same level same elixir cost. this would make it an extremely versatile card whilst also not being too OP but its as good as a card as the user is. theres nothing it really couldnt do but at the same time it would be a master at absolutely nothing so you really just have to have a good plan and know what ur doing. i think it would also be a cool concept because a lot of my favorite decks only really have 7 required cards so having mirror in there to basically switch my 8th card to whatever i need in a certain situation without being down 1 extra elixir would be really nice. what better way to counter a megaknight than to mirror ur own? what better way is there to counter spell cycle then literally just stealing their spells? you could make some really strong offensive decks but at the same time having unbeatable defensive decks with maybe miner to just slowly chip away. and no skill strats like spell cycle would be removed like i touched on earlier cause if you try it then ur opponent can just mirror ur rocket posion or wtv whilst also having a big and small spell of their own so youll literally just get out damaged. super OP but super balanced at the same time imo. really makes both players have to play and think far more tactically which is what i think the game is about.

The reason why they removed level 6 legendary in the early game was because of the princess not dying to max level arrows and there was no other solution to kill her without using fireball which would cost one more elixir. I think that the mirror should get a -1 elixir cost, still the +1 to card level, but on the card death it would give a elixir to the oponent, dont know if that would be broken or not but that my idea, perhaps also add some kind of purplish textur to the mirrored card to signifie it or just as you said, but make the next elixir you play regenerate twoce as fast, (still need the + cost though to play it, you just get the elixir back faster)

Your idea to fix the mirror would not require any overhaul like you said if they added half elixir cost cards. Essentially if they made mirror cost 0.5 more elixir and added the possibility for other cards to be 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 etc elixir too. This would also make it a lot easier for them to balance OP cards without going overboard. I think the idea you gave would be really good for the game as a whole and not just mirror.

At least it was giving some variation in otherwise quite boring meta, also the problems with +2 level mirror were mostly 3-card cycle/E-giant/EQ and some other broken cards, but all of these were fixed, so I see no issues in bringing it back, I was watching quite a bit of replays back then and it was really fun to see people trying out new decks, new variations, it was actually refreshing and providing tons of new tactical decisions, unlike now where the mirror is just same old trash, which it totally don't deserve, I hope Supercell eventually will bring it back, cause even with Monk and Phoenix it won't be OP, cause they were also nerfed, Monk is borderline useless, while Phoenix is balanced, thanks for another great video, I like your dedication on creating those kind of historical overviews, keep it up!
