The now dead RFC was, as the supporters of the newco tribute act are still, widely known in Scotland to be a major embarrassment.

As a Welshman going to live in Glasgow in the 80's for a year, I experienced the madness, as I attended matches at both clubs. I was made welcome by both sets of fans. I felt more at home at Ibrox though it must be said.

One point of clarification: I thought the song (We Are The Billy Boys) was about Billy Fullerton - not William III as claimed by the narrator. Could nay Gers / Selly fans confirm? I'm neither Catholic nor Protestant and found this film absolutely fascinating. The one time when the oft said phrase, "Football is not a matter of life & death - it's more important" is actually true.

Brought up in Glasgow I am fully aware of the history of Rangers & Celtic but what I didn't know is that until Ronnie Whelan was bought by Liverpool, they had a policy that they wouldn't sign Irish Catholics. I only learned this recently and was surprised of this level of sectarianism shown by LFC. In England this contrasts sharply with their biggest rivals Manchester United who have always welcomed supporters and players from all religions. During the troubles in Belfast one of the only times Catholics and Protestants would mix was on the many Manchester United supporter's coaches leaving the city for the weekly trip to watch United. I remember seeing a documentary back in the 70's or 80's about this amazing phenomenon. This proves that football can be a positive thing in society when politics has failed!

Liverpool had many Catholics before Ronnie Whelan ..Chris Lawler for one . The story that Liverpool were protestant and Tory is in the bygone days of yore . LFC fans are pretty close to Glasgow Celtic fans both in ethnicity and politics. YNWA.

there was a time and misguided belief that Liverpool F.C. were protestent and Everton F.C. were Catholic. there is though an element of truth although not carried on today by either supporters but you do hear it coming out in some songs like the kop used to sing songs affiliated to ulster while Evertonians sang'oh to hell with Liverpool and Rangers too..throw them all in the Mersey etc' it does still lurk but most supporters wouldn't notice it.

I am a working class Liverpool Scouser in England ... we have two clubs in Liverpool. We have Everton who used to have Anfield as there home ground, the rent went up so the left Anfield and moved to Goodison Park (just on the other side of Stanley Park. Liverpool F.C. started because Everton left Anfield ... Liverpool started with a Blue and White strip and Evertond had a Liver Bird as their badge. Things have ganged and yes we had sectarianism on the grounds of just religion, I am glad to say that has faded. We have mixed families supporting Everton and Liverpool and we stand/sit side by side when we play each other we stand together as Scousers never mind who you support!.
