Rangers were very harshly treated by HMRC, who initially claimed that they had broken the rules with their use of EBTs. But later on down the line, turns around and says "oh you haven't broken any rules after all". My uncle has never really supported either side of the Old Firm and he saw that sometime later when Hearts and Dunfermline were also in trouble with HMRC for financial irregularities that neither of those two clubs got treated anything like as harshly as Rangers were. HMRC even said at the time that they were intending on making an example of Rangers but even though HMRC were the ones who had screwed up they still offered no compensation and no apology for their actions. This was a government body, on a crusade and botched it. My uncle says that HMRC's conduct was nothing short of disgusting and disgraceful. It's not so much the playing staff we were concerned about but the everyday ordinary people who worked inside Ibrox stadium. People like the cleaners, catering staff, ticket staff and groundsmen. Shocking.
