Riding the trough downwards on price but still producing visceral, gutteral, bestial imputs you'd have to include the 2003 SVT Mustang Cobra which-with simple bolt-ons- produced 500 bhp without protest from an iron block, supercharged 4.6 L DOHC V8 mated to an unbreakable tremec 6 spd manual. Apart from being slightly underbraked and slightly overweight based on its 101.3" wheelbase and nose-heavy weight distribution the car was workable and produced thrust never before felt till that point. Excellent comparo as usual SCD !!!

The GT3RS every day. I was lucky enough to own a 2003 996 GT2 (yes, GT2, not GT3) for a few years, and that thing was a weapon. No traction control, no electronic nannies, no driver aids, except ABS on the Carbon Ceramic brakes the car came with. I tracked that car, and once you got the front end geometry fixed it was utterly brilliant. I was a track driving instructor, and used to track it with GT3RS and GT3Rs, Vipers, Corvettes, and I was consistently shocked at just how good it was. The GT3 and GT2 of that era, were some of the last Porsches that were raw, unaided and relied purely on driving talent and ability to drive at the limit; no intervening nannies to save your ass.

It's a very nice film. In my opinion, these vehicles are the sweet spot of Driver Cars. Quasi the golden era. I also have a pair of E46 M3s and just haven't been able to get away from them for 12 years. These new-fashioned Turboboxes with XXX screens, emotionless motors, brakes and steering ... no thanks, I'll stick with them here.

For a pure drivers car, the 996RS is not only the easy winner of this test but the greatest 996 and indeed the greatest ever GT3 ! All those that followed were remote and over polished by comparison. One of the greatest 911’s as well, very few modern cars are as rewarding or ask so much of the driver.

I would happily own any of these but ended up owning the one that I lusted after from new the 360 CS. For me it’s the noise and near race car driving experience that ticks all the boxes. The CSL came from an era when BMW were on top of their game, with the bastardisation of turbo BMW like most other manufacturers have moved away from engine craftsmanship to sourcing bolts on blowers for power and outlandish bhp for instant performance, there are real drivers cars. Certainly from the great era of NA engine. Thanks for sharing.

Its one of the most successful designs ever, its crazy what they accomplished with the platform, going head to head with porsche for the hardcore trackday market. Then porsche developed 997, 991 and so on, nissan gtr, mercedes and audi got in the game. But idk if numbers tell the whole story. GT2 and GTR feel number, less fun. This argument could also be made for lotus, few cars provide a physical sensation like that.

All three are great cars, I've owned a 996 GT3 race car and had a friend with the 360 CS and both were amazing cars. Loved the looks of the CSL but the transmission and brakes were not up to par when I tested two some years back.... but they rectified it all with the GTS.

i remember the first CSL i ever saw. it was parked up down a back street. me and this random guy just stopped and stared at it for a while. we didnt know each other but we both had the exact same reaction. we walked round it just pointing out the amazing attention to detail to each other. then we went our separate ways. i own a silver grey regular E46 M3 now. but one day i hope i can get hold of a CSL. its the complete car for me.

3 great cars from a time that produced some fantastic drivers cars. I would pick the GT3rs though I'm a bit biased having owned a Gen 1 996 GT3 Club Sport for many years. Mine had a Manthey K400 upgrade which included a re-map & exhaust resulting in close to 400bhp and a fantastic soundtrack thanks to the M&M exhaust (stock GT3's sound too quiet imo). The GT3rs officially produced 375 but most put out north of 400bhp on a dyno. Love both the 360CS & M3CSL but a shame neither of these came with a manual option as personally not a fan of early paddle shift gearboxes.

I've had 3 E46 M3's, including 2 comp cars (1 SMG, 1 Manual). All awesome, wish I'd held on to them all now. SMG gets a much harder reputation than it deservers, coming from a manual enthusiast, SMG is almost more fun when you are on it. E46 M3 best car I've ever owned (coming from B7 RS4, B5 RS4, C6 Z06, Numerous STI's, Mustangs, E36 M3, VW GTI's, R's etc)
