Ditto on the comment below. I lost my wife and three daughters seven years ago on thanksgiving night. I contemplate suicide on December of that year (2015). Luckily that attempt failed due “circumstances out of my control” however the pain was so humongous that I was still on that path…until again for circumstances of life I ended up watching a very old Michaels video on Marcus Aurelius. That lecture changed my life for ever!. @ Michael: Thanks for exist man. Thanks for keep fighting against all the things life has threw and will keeping through at you. But most of all. Thanks for your humble ways and share your knowledge with us…with me. Even though I have never had the opportunity to met you, please know that in did I love you like a father…you have been very good to me…thanks….sincerely Sid

when you’re Michael Sugrue I suspect you don’t have an unanswered need for thanks and praise… I’ve consumed much of the ‘old’ (late 80’s / early 90’s (?)) Princeton lectures which are just pure *gold*… and now just rolling around in the current series of lectures we’re blessed with, and look… there are occasional spikes in excellence in aspects of life. the man is a total gem - particularly brilliant, genuinely funny, charming, and endearing. so, no need to receive praise but nevertheless - “thx” for the mental sparks and heart warmth, Michael - and to The Universe (or whatever) for your overall human richness. seanM

@davidconroy8554 Жыл бұрын
@@williammcenaney1331 well there are a number of variables that could impact on that. I don't know that I'll live five years, I could be dead tomorrow. Cancer is curable, I don't give a fuck what anybody says, it depends on what kind of cancer it is. I had an enlarged prostate and fixed it naturally, Denis MC Kenna used Turkey tail mushrooms to cure his Ma, she had breast cancer. For Brain cancer I'd use Rick Simpson oil, personally I wouldn't go near a doctor. But of course one would first have to overcome the fear of death.

Prof. Sugrue, without coming across as an obsessed fan, your videos are a blessing on my Recommended page. You've stated before in your TTC lecture tour that Plato sought to supersede Homer as the great teacher of Greece, and for what it's worth, that is how I saw you and your lessons as a fledgling mind. I continue to refer back to the Dialogues as well as your annotations as a yearly tradition. As always, looking forward to your next video with earnest.

Excellent lecture as always professor I'd like to add something else to the preamble of Achilles: the triple insult that leads to his sulking. As we discover later in book 1 The son of Thetis was prophesied to be greater than his father. When the other gods noticed Jove's eyes wandering to Thetis they grew fearful of the prophecy, after all the last divine son who surpassed his father is now king of the gods, so they schemed to marry her to a mortal. This the first tragedy, he's gone from divine to mortal before being born. So Thetis is "wedded" to a mortal but at least for Achilles the man is a king. So Achilles is now destined to be a great king but what's this? His mother receives a prophecy that he will only gain his glory if he goes off to war and dies. Now he's been robbed of being divine, and robbed of longevity. All he has left is his glory. So when Agememnon takes Briseis in the opening, he's symbolically taking the last piece of destiny Achilles has left. I add this because i feel it adds more depth to the pain behind his decision to refuse to fight and to his scene with Priam, a king who kneels to Achilles and gives him the respect he feels he deserves for the first time in his life.

I recently almost bought Plato's republic at a local bookstore but have been massively hesitant to read Pluto's work as I don't want to tarnish my own writing, when you hear things like, 'All of Western philosophy is but a footnote to Plato' it's hard to be original if you consume well-trodden paths.
@cleanslate668 Жыл бұрын
Interesting point about not wanting to consume well-trodden paths. Aren't you writing for an audience though? Shouldn't you therefore know the origin of the tradition you and your audience is in?@@darillus1
