'Can't Buy a Thrill' is not typical of Steely Dan's later work; it is much more of a straight up pop rock album, with a focus on short, hooky songs. Fagen even surrenders the mic to smooth crooner David Palmer on 2 songs.

Side one of Moving Pictures is untouchable. Also, stop what you're doing right now and listen to In Rainbows -- Radiohead's most accessible and warm album -- Weird Fishes/Arpeggi is incredible. I agree with you on Steely Dan. Enjoyable video, thanks for sharing.

I finally listened to Ziggy Stardust today! Was picking up a prescription at Walmart yesterday and walked by the records. It was sitting there front and center and on sale for $17. I dig it!

I fell into the "oh you gotta own this and that" when I started collecting again. After hitting 500 albums I realized i had many I never really listened to. I purged down to 200 and now only get records that are ones I can spin and enjoy vs. just having it on the shelf for clout.

Honestly, I've not listened to almost all of those either. I think it's because i grew up with my mom and dad playing Classic rock that I also knew all greatest hits or radio hits and have never gone back to dig in to the albums. As for Radiohead, I don't get them. I've tried. That being said, Marquee Moon is one of my absolute favorite albums. I only discovered it about 10 years ago, but it quickly jumped to the top of my list.

It took me awhile to get to All Things Must Pass. When I first heard Joni Mitchell Blue, it stuck in my head and probably listened to it 20 times in a row non-stop. I then understood all the critical acclaim. Steely Dan is pure genius. Every album is phenomenal from Can't Buy a Thrill all the way to Gaucho. I like prog rock (Yes, ELP, etc.) and just listened to King Crimson (Court of Crimson King) all the way way through and I'm 62. I need to embrace Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye. Heard bits and pieces but none of their albums all the way through.

nick odd question. Did you play football back in the day? Otherwise, love your channel here, great takes on records. In Rainbows isnt as good as Kid A..last great Radiohead record

The only album that troubled me to see on here is "Marquee Moon". I'm a big Television fan and their first two albums have always been part of my life. I think you would enjoy both of them if you want to give them a chance. There's a recent reissue of "Marquee Moon" I've heard good things about quality-wise- should be pretty easy to find. King Crimson are one of my favorite bands but I can see how they might not be easy to get into. I recommend starting with "Red" and working backwards. "Red" and the two LPs before that (plus the live "USA") are masterpieces.

I’m the same with you on a lot of classic artists. I’ve listened to greatest hits albums, but no regular albums. Bob Dylan is one for me.

I am with you on many of these! Especially the overblown hype of King crimson and steely Dan! Pretentious? Exactly!

It’s true we all got a list with great albums we missed or payed no attention to. I had a cd of core by stone temple pilots for years. Then I bought the record (don’t ask me why) and now one of my favorites. Live goes that way sometimes. Hope you get in to Steely Dan to. I just listen to it for the first time in 2023. It ain’t bad 😅

I have still not listened to "Dark Side of the Moon" been aware of it for decades but sort of like the fact that I never jumped on that bandwagon. LOL.

King Crimson really stand out from the Progressive Rock crowd to me. They get a lot heavier and get a lot closer to Art Rock and Avant Garde. In The Court is a solid place to start but Red/Lark's Tongues might work better for some Metal or even Punk fans. Their 80s albums, Discipline being the best, sound kind of like a heavier Talking Heads and might be a great place for some people to start too.

For me, the King Crimson debut is the only serious miss on your list. Especially two tracks, 'Epitaph' and 'The Court of the Crimson King' are larger than life. Furthermore, considering their character, they are not even progressive songs, so you have nothing to be afraid of...🙂

In this day and age of streaming, you have no excuse for not hearing ANY album. Unless of course the artist do not appeal to you. At least 4 of your picks I could careless about ever hearing.

Listen to Rush in Rio. Amazing live album and a good way to get into Rush. There is also a dvd concert to go with the album.

cant buy a thrill is the only dan album I own. basically for do it again and reeling in the years. The rest of the album is a bore to me. I think you might be surprised by in rainbows. Its sort of a return to form after kid A. wierd fishes is in my top 10 radiohead songs. Nude is also probably one of their best slow songs. You might be surprised by court of the crimson king. the first track is 21 century schizoid is probably a turn off for you but i talk to the wind is a beautiful ballad and epitah is in my top 5 crimson songs.

@Stonecutter33414 сағат бұрын
Steely Dan is overrated. As is In Rainbows, Radiohead long after they were great.

In Rainbows is my favourite album ever. It is great. Also, people who don’t like the Kid A etc often like In Rainbows.

Some of these are heresy, but Rush, though they have some good stuff, Moving Pictures has maybe ... MAYBE ... one good song. Tom Sawyer is one of the most tuneless, boring rock songs I've ever heard.
