I have Folio Society books. Easton/Franklin Press books. Heritage Press. And a couple Canterbury Classics. I love them all. I waver between Heritage Press and Easton for which are my favorites. I love the slipcases of Folio Society and Heritage Press. Middlemarch. I got lost in the middle of the novel and never finished. I'll have to start again.

Awesome video, Kim, and what a great collection. Like you, I love slipcases. and collect Folio editions too - great quality and beautiful illustrations, but yeah, they are so pricey!

Definitely expensive! I look for them used in wonderful condition, but they're not easy to find.

Lovely book, the Middlemarch. Your eyes shone when you showed the title. It’s so good to read those books, clear type, nice illustrations. Oh my, $60 for 8 incredible Charles Dickens?!! I’m envious. I would love the PP but I’m not in the USA. I understand you perfectly. Those books cause joy, plenty of joy. It enhances the reading experience immensely. I decided to start Les Miserables on my birthday (July 9) and I’ll be reading one chapter per day. There are 365 chapters.

What beautiful books. I'd guess the 1939 editions may be a little rare consideringthat time in our history. Maybe not in the North but the South was in deep poverty still.

I have a bit of a slipcase edition habit too. It developed once I took to e-books as if I am going keep a physical copy it is lovely if it is a nice object. They all come from second hand book shops or charity shops. I love your joy in these.

Just another thought! It wouldn't suprise me at all if Heritage Press hadn't made those for a booth at the New York Worlds Fair which occured in 1939 thru 1940!

I have a few slipcases in pocket size books, mostly classics, Hemingway, Tolstoï... I also have a Jane Austen book collection, Arsene Lupin and Sherlock Holmes stories. They are very big, heavy and illustrated! I love that! I had posted a picture of them on my IG feed, they are gorgeous and I read them too.

@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH I'm currently buddy reading my very first Dickens. We just decided we want to go to the beginning and buddy read them all! I will be reading the book you're sending because my HB edition is small font and it's just not the same on kindle. It's kismet.
Lovely editions. I also have the pocketbook edition of Silas Marner and the pickwick papers I haven’t read them yet. What do you like about the stories?
@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH Жыл бұрын
I've read Silas Marner. Eliot's writing is beautiful and I love how she plots and weaves her stories.

Lovely books--thanks for sharing! The illustrations for your Les Miserables edition look very 1930s--who is the illustrator? I have an edition of Moby Dick with illustrations by Rockwell Kent, in the same style. It made my reading experience of the book so much more interesting and enjoyable. There's a guy in my neighborhood who restores old books and makes/restores slipcases, so it is possible to have them repaired or new slipcases made, should you ever want to make that investment in your books.
@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH3 жыл бұрын
I think the illustrator is Lynd Ward but I don’t have them in front of me right now. I know you can get replacement slip cases. I don’t think that’s necessary for my purposes. And I agree with the aesthetics of the book making the whole reading experience more enjoyable. It just does! 🤣🤓

I love seeing what brings others joy. I hope this isn’t a stupid question but how do those boxed copies sit on the shelf? The spines are so beautiful it would be a shame to turn them inward but also a shame to face them outward and expose them to fading etc..
@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH3 жыл бұрын
The spines face out just like a regular book. It’s another reason why I love buying used copies. I don’t treat my books as precious just with healthy respect. 🤓

You sent me to our local online trader o see what was available and I found a book on G H Lewes which I have never seen before. Not a slipcase book but I think will be invaluable on my further reading of George Eliot

Great review! As a former member of The Heritage Club in the late 1970s through the early 1980s, I agree they produced many beautiful books. The club was an offshoot of The Limited Editions Club, which produced limited editions, exquisitely designed, letterpress printed with artwork by some of the best book artists of the time (who traditionally signed the book's colophon). The Heritage Club generally published the same volume, with the same artwork in an unlimited print run, printed offset with different paper and less expensive binding material. Having said that, the Heritage Club volumes (no longer produced) may be the best value in beautifully made Classic editions on the secondary market today. Isn't it thrilling to hold and read one of these! If you want to know more there is a terrific website relating to these books: georgemacyimagery.wordpress.com . I have no affiliation with the site, other than using it as a valued reference.
