Well, the intense rains we've been getting here are preventing me from getting out into the woods to shoot some History of Camping Gear videos, and at the same time forcing me to shoot them in hotter weather than I normally do. So I'm taking advantage of the hiatus to make some gear for camping in hot weather.

My grandfather was a farmer born in 1898. in the summer I can remember him still wearing long underwear, a wool rich shirt with the collar buttoned and bib overalls all summer . I asked him how are you not passing out from the heat and he told me what keeps out the cold , keeps out the hot. I not sure where the science was behind that but it worked for him and I was the one who got the bad sun burn.

Wool is not nearly as hot as some folks think. I've regularly worn wool shirts doing Indian Wars interpretation at Fort McKavett back in the day. It will absorb moisture and release it through evaporation, just not as well as linen or silk will. My Grampa did wear long handles, but in the summer it was jeans and a white cotton tee shirt and a Boston Red Sox cap. Thanks for watching!

👍 I also live on the Gulf Coast and am very interested in your new series. Linen is a good choice, the wrinkles give it style, on you it probably also has panache.

I think you spelled pancake wrong. :) Good to know these are doing some good for somebody. Its going to be a while before we can get out into the National Forest.

I use linen shirts here in New Mexico. I DO get them laundered and pressed now and again to flatten the placket (front where the buttons fasten.)

I hand wash and air dry all of my linen stuff. I don't really have a whole bunch and I can do it in the bathtub, just before I wash the dog.

I still have one linen dress shirt that I bought back in the late 90s. I had two but one is stored who knows where. The only reason it's not popular is it wrinkles easily. That and our linen crop production is probably zero. Between it's use for cloth, canvas, linoleum and linseed oil there used to be huge fields of it. I talked to an old fellow that when he was a farm hand rented land and planted flax. The next year he rented another 80 acres. Soon he owned his own farm. When it's popularity died out he had to become a carpenter. But flax was a good as wheat for a crop. I love the feel of linen.

Yah, I'm not all that worried about wrinkles while camping😀. The ironic thing is that linseed oil used to be a byproduct of linen production, now its the other way around. It does get softer the more you wash it, which I think is a huge plus. Thanks for watching!

How would you compare linen to the moden Synthethic sportsware? Although I'm almost positive you might make a video on this subject alone in the future. :)

Thanks for watching, and more thanks for the question. There's an old saying about outdoor fabrics: "They must be lightweight, durable, and inexpensive...but you only get to choose two of those." The one thing some modern synthetic fabrics can do today that the traditional fabrics could is be breathable and water resistant at the same time (wool is the traditional fabric comes closest). Most modern outdoor fabrics beat out the traditionals in the price and weight department (I don't count cotton as being a specifically outdoor fabric) when the performance is equal. But most of us aren't out in the extremes of temperature and climate where super-performance is required. Traditional fabrics like wool and linen aren't being as mass produced as petrochemically based synthetics (which is ironic b/c it was the other way around just 60-70 years ago), and very little outdoor gear made from them is mass produced. Oilcloth, for instance, costs up to twice as much per yard as modern water-resistant synthetics, its heavier, and most ready-made stuff made with it is spendy.
