Really enjoy the trip down Nostalgia Lane. Brings a smile and good memories. While "promoting" the toy was evident, the stories themselves usually made up for it. It's a shame the movies strayed so far off. Lot of good material over 155+ issues.

I loved the comics and especially the early ones. I think I read issue 12 so many times it started to fall apart lol. A real shame Hasbro never considered Kwinn, Venom or even Scar Face for figures. Could have been a limited release mail away offer for Flag points (remember those?) or something. Great episode and I love the channel. Keep up the good work!

I remember when these comics were new, the only G.I. Joe things I still have from childhood are the comics. I was really expecting Quinn to be part of the 2nd wave of figures, that was probably the biggest disappointment for comic characters never made into figures. Also, the issue #10 cover is burned in my memory, my brother and me used to sometimes go to Springfield Mass to the mall there for good toy hunting, every time we'd joke about seeing Cobra behind every corner.

If they had that much detail in Destro, like the grenades on his arm, I’d have to say that not showing his face was probably due to some big reveal that they wanted; as opposed to not knowing what the final toy was gonna look like

Great video, Michael. These old school Joe comics have a special place in my heart. But it's not simply nostalgia - I still think they're great comics!

I just remembered another memory about these... one of my many trips to my local comic shop, I plunked a few back issues of gi joe on the counter and the cashier goes "good old gi joe... these will never be worth anything. Enjoy!" Joke is on him! They won't put my kids through college but the memories and great stories are PRICELESS!!!

Great video! Loved reading original Marvel comics back in the 80s and enjoying going back from time to time to read them again. Timeless stories- especially from the start of the comic up to the Cobra Civil War - so many great character moments in these issues - especially doc’s comments about facing Destro for the first time at the end of issue 11 - classic - thanks for the reviews and can’t wait for the next installment.

Man, this is a great channel! The nostalgia... As a kid I collected Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, Uncanny X-Men, but G.I. Joe is the only one to which I subscribed. So excited when it arrived in the mail each month. I preferred the early issues and team, before they introduced more sci-fi/fantasy elements and characters.

I had a subscription to these, and are still bagged and boarded. Forgot the awesome story names for these early comics. Rio Lindo was one of my favorites .

Very cool G.I. Joe comics issues 11-15. It must feel really good to have all the 1-155 issues. Very cool video, you rock Michael.

I think the Destro reveal was probably deliberately teased out to add an element of mystery to the character. Didn't they do something similar in the Spiderman comics back in the day with the Hobgoblin reveal? You kinda just see him as a shadowy figure initially.

Glad they didn't drag it out as long as Zarak in the Headmasters series. Watching that right now and wow it took forever to finally get a well-lit shot of him.

Speaking of characters being used in snow environments "Quick Kick" is another prime example. Over this past year, I have gathered a good chunk of G.I. Joe comics. They are very refreshing to read at times. Hearing your comic reviews feel like storytime with GI Joe.

Yeah I remember Quick Kick's debut in the show, shirtless and barefoot! At least Gung Ho had a hat, vest and boots. :D

@@MichaelMercy - “No shoes, no shirt, no service.” Quick-Kick wasn’t allowed in 7-11 and never even got to buy himself a Slurpee or a cheeseburgerdog. Very sad. 😢

Love these old comics- thanks for putting this up. I suppose the show (smartly) focused on the personalities of the second batch of figures. Nice that the OD characters got their due in the comics.

Glad you enjoyed it! These early comics almost feels like a prequel to the cartoon instead of an alternate reality. I never thought I'd prefer '82 Hawk over '86, the one I grew up with, but Col. Hawk in the comic is everything Duke was on the show and more.

Thanks! I started reading gi joe comics around... 85? (I would have been 5 or 6) Most memorable arc for me was the saw viper who went nuts and killed a bunch of joes over several issues. I really want to go back and read the earlier stuff. This is very motivational towards that goal! Thanks!!!

Fascinating stuff...really hope you get the chance to do something similar with Marvel's G1 Transformers comics some day, yes? (Especially the Marvel UK ones...!!!).

IMO, Issues 8 - 24 were otherworldly. Issues 25 - 43 were not far off that mark. Those were Halycon Days defined! What a run!!

Issue 19, wow. Interesting how that one has such significance. That's a noteworthy number for Stephen King fans. It has shown up at different points in his stories, as well as significant moments in King's life (he almost died in a car accident June 19th 1999). And GIJoe adds another layer to the spookiness of 19: as Joe fans probably know, there is a direct link between King and GIJoe (he co-created 1987's Crystal Ball, the character Sneak Peek was named after one of King's sons, and his other son is named Joe). Probably just a coincidence that issue 19 is abnormally significant. Or is it... Seriously though, Google "Stephen King 19" -- it's fascinating.

Fascinating, RVB. I didn't know any of that. I have yet to figure out if synchronicities like this are the universe speaking to us through numbers (frequencies) or if it's human occult activity - or maybe a bit of both.
