i love the Castrovalvan sets, the city looks great given the inside is all studio bound another thing i like is that Adric is absent for much of it, giving the new doctor and companions more focus fun fact, the little girl who tells the doctor numbers is played by the daughter of Caroline John (Liz Shaw)

There are indeed a lot of question marks - you may have noticed that the Doctor still has two on his shirt collar, despite his regeneration and new costume! JNT was quite keen on using costumes as “uniforms” to enhance the brand of his regular characters - I think he thought it made them more recognisable and marketable, hence why poor old Adric had been stuck in the same clothes ever since Full Circle. “The guy on the right looks familiar” - hmm… The little girl who makes a sweet little cameo here was actually the niece of Caroline “Liz Shaw” John, while the medical man in pink is our old friend Micheal Sheard, making his fifth guest appearance in the show. There is an irony to the scene where the Doctor happily chomps into some celery, as Peter hated the stuff and apparently spat it out again as soon as the scene was over!

4:50: Michael Sheard is back! After appearing in 'The Ark' (with William Hartnell), 'The Mind of Evil' (Jon Pertwee), 'Pyramids of Mars' and 'The Invisible Enemy' (both Tom Baker), he is now appearing in his fifth story, as his fifth character and opposite his fourth Doctor. Keep your eyes open for him in the future, he's not finished yet.

Davison's 'Sorry, must dash!' would later become his unfortunate sign off, after he was hounded off Twitter for some perfectly anodyne comments about the casting of Jodie Whittaker. So it's refreshing to see it back in its original context, when he was our childhood hero.

I think that Castrovalva is the first of the 'Regeneration as a big event' stories in classic Who. Something which has carried over into Nu Who. Compare this to 'Robot', where Tom's post-regeneration symptom was just being a bit manic for an episode. Here, we're on episode 3, and Five still isn't quite firing on all cylinders...

Yes, it's interesting that this wasn't the plan until the original first story fell through (in which the Doctor was fully active in trying to prevent an interplanetary nuclear war). Four stories later they got Bidmead back and he built on the TARDIS-twisting ideas of Logopolis with some extra twists on the concept of regeneration as a traumatic change. We struck lucky!

He did fall forty meters onto concrete and died of, among other things, a bad head injury. And had to merge with one of his leftover leisure hive clones (probably The Curator).

2:54 "Hope they're drinking enough water" - there was actually a deleted scene in the previous episode showing Tegan drinking from the river (just after Nyssa took her involuntary dip in it), but it was cut for fear it would encourage children to do likewise.

Janet Fielding (Tegan) said herself that it was never filmed, planned but when they asked her to, she immediately refused becuase it might make her violently ill just being a random stream

The endearing moment between the Doctor and the child (yet another member of Caroline John's extended family to make it into an episode) signals the real change between this version and his predecessor. In some corners, No.5 was dismissed as the 'Wet Vet' - and not in a good way. But even if you were a big fan of the follow-my-own-rules anarchism of Tom Baker's Doctor (and America certainly was, as the libertarian stranger who shows up in town and solves everyone's problems is pretty much a myth of their own making), 7 years of the same thing was enough to make the alternative look good. If you were in paradise that long you'd get sick of it eventually!

The Castrovalvans are lovely. Shardovan and Mergrave in particular excel. The Portreve too is charming. Mergrave would make for a companion as good as Nyssa. The hats look like large ice cream buckets with silk wrapped around them. The 5th Doctor had two episodes per week, so the biggest cliffhanger would be between 2 and 3. Blood was better than event one moohahahaha! 3 microns is 300p nanometers. Note that today's microchips are made 7 nanometers thick, so the technobabble - despite being based in part in real life fabrication processes - is dated. :( I love celery. Oh, the blu-ray release has some excellent new effects...

It's quite a brave decision to keep the Doctor in his regeneration for so long - especially with it being the first new Doctor in such a long time. Though the Davison era was broadcast twice weekly on weekday nights so, I suppose, the viewers weren't waiting as long to discover the new Doctor as they would've done if the show was still weekly on a Saturday night. And, yes, it wouldn't be Doctor Who if there was nobody behaving suspiciously... ;)

I personally think Davison gets stronger with each story so if you're enjoying him now then you'll definitely enjoy his era as it goes on. He's still finding his feet here in my opinion - he did say he watched tapes of the old doctors for ideas and I think it shows, I sense that he's doing a mediocre imitation of previous incarnations but within a couple of stories he becomes his own doctor and masters it.

He didn't... he says that in an interview and then they show the footage of that recorded scene and he bites into it, chews it and swallows it.... a harmless bit of fabrication there by Davison.

You have put your finger on something that a lot of us have long suspected about this era of the show (and much earlier than I expected you to), the companions haven't changed their clothes or had time to shower, so they must all be pretty smelly by now. Producer John Nathan Turner wanted to keep the Doctor and the companions in the same outfits most of the time because he was interested in possible toy merchandising for the series and thought it would help if the characters had an indelible, easily recognized look. Ironically of course, today character options produces toys based on the series and love for characters to have a lot of different looks, so the company can sell multiple alternative versions of each character. So JNT was forward thinking about the possibilities for merchandising, but a bit wrong about keeping the TARDIS crew's sartorial choices so limited.

Perhaps the TARDIS has a futuristic cleaning room that launders your clothes as you shower... though given Troughton-Doctor's reaction to the "sprucing up machine" in The Macra Terror, perhaps he was as smelly as the "hobo" tag would indicate!

Not sure if you are a fan of Big Finish audios, but once you are done with this season, you should listen to Spare Parts. It's a great Fifth Doctor story, and it fits in nicely after the finale of Season 19. (It is on Spotify)

I don't know if celery does have any beneficial qualities, but I share Pete's feeling about it, I can't imagine how much he had to actually eat, but the stick of celery on the lapel was the only odd addition to the outfit, personally I rather like it.

Peter Davison was not at all fond of celery - as the camera reveals just after he takes a bite and the scene cuts! The idea that the new Doctor should wear what his future son-in-law would later refer to as 'a decorative vegetable' came straight from John Nathan Turner and without explanation. Davison, already considering his costume a compromise, reluctantly agreed on the understanding that its presence was explained by the end of his time on the show... And his grimace over the taste of a regular salad favourite isn't the only telling moment behind-the-scenes. Acting in Dr Who, as in most science-fiction, is an act of belief. As the scene cuts away from '...We're caught in a space/time trap!' (which any fan of that period will recognize even outside of context), the camera catches him looking sideways at the camera: '...A bit over the top?...'

Although The Fifth Doctor loves celery behind the scenes Peter Davison actually hates it and spat it out straight away after the scene was done. This story was abit of a mishmash if I'm quite honest it's ok in some areas but confusing in others.
