Hi Marie-Clare I'm a recent subscriber to your channel and I am really enjoying your reactions to classic Who, I myself have been a fan since I was 5yr (I've just turned 36)🤪, been catching up on your play lists here on KZbin (too poor for patreon lol) 😆 and don't worry I've heard you loud and clear about "spoilers" so if you read this before you reach the stories in question, I just want to suggest that if you have the option of watching S19 Ep19-22 and S20 Ep1-4, Ep9-12, Ep17-20 and 20th A.S. with updated CGI effects or special editions, do so 👍🏻 they will inhance your viewing experience 😉

And now we start the Davison era. I hope you enjoy this era. I personally think that this era is underrated, and there are some absolute classics in this era that I'm sure you'll enjoy. Also, Davison was the youngest doctor at the time. He got the role at age 29 (If i'm not mistaken) And if you plan to get this season on blu-ray, beware of the front cover, it has spoilers.

Your description of Tom being less emotional is an interesting one. When Tom was first cast as the Doctor he asked, "How do I play someone who's over 700 years old?" To which Producer Barry Letts replied, "With Olympian detachment." So your analysis of his character is pretty spot on.
@rnw2739
@rnw2739 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Tom's enthusiasm and boundless energy is apparent for all to see in his first few seasons as is his apathetic portrayal for the last few seasons. Tom was admittedly a drunk by this time and a tad megalomaniac towards the show... wanting no companion at all, telling directors how to direct and virtually thinking he knew it all and was infallible. He is simply going through the motions from season 16 onwards and it is visible to any fool.
@whobp8
@whobp8 2 жыл бұрын
@@rnw2739 I think you're interpreting "less emotional" as "emotionless". The Fourth Doctor does demonstrate enthusiasm, humor, curiosity, camaraderie, anger, brooding and other emotions all the time, but when things are serious and stuff needs to get done, he is good at being detached and getting on with things. Consider Pyramids of Mars where he pushes Mr Scarman's body aside and Sarah Jane chides him for his being "inhuman". Or the way he conceals his real motivations from the Vardans in Invasion of Time. Or the way he doesn't really take time to comfort Tegan when she learns her Aunt has been murdered by the Master in Logopolis. Or his understated reactions to the departures of Sarah Jane, Leela and Romana. It's not that he doesn't feel sad to be saying goodbye to these friends, but he doesn't want to be too demonstrative about how much he is going to miss them. He has emotions and sometimes they're very much to the forefront, but he's very good at compartmentalizing them and being stoic.
@rnw2739
@rnw2739 Жыл бұрын
@Jack the Film Fanatic It is as visible as the most visible vision that one could visualise. The Fourth Doctor in say.... 'The Seeds of Doom', is utterly different to the Fourth Doctor in 'Warriors' Gate', and let's not pretend that is due to some fiendishly clever character arc his incarnation was undergoing.... No, he had the hump... constantly. He was often inebriated, occasionally hung over, suffering from delusions of grandeur and his own importance and it was noted by everyone except you clearly. The amount of times he 'shushes' Romana or Adric - completely drowning their line.... Never to Sarah or Harry.... Season 18 sees him looking 30 years older than he was in season 12 and that was due to his excesses, his boredom of the show, his dislike of his fellow actors even! He barely learned the lines anymore, prevarication on set and turning affable writers into screaming, ranting lunatics because he refuses to utter what some have wrote.... The pathetically childish 'gags' he put in simply because he thought them hilariously 'unpredictable'...even though their triumphant delivery was met with tumbleweed silence and expressions of despair collectively. He became the stereotypical, bitchy actors that thought what he said went, at all times, and if anyone dared to challenge then they were merely plebs. His utter dislike of every other actor to play the role before and after him, is very telling... He is absent from 'The Five Doctors' not due to another commitment or job but because he will never share a screen with another version of this Gallifreyan character who (what he laughably believes) is totally his creation! He despises his regeneration scene, palming it off as badly shot (which in fairness it is) and of course, he didn't have a massive hour long speech to utter....like you would be able too after plummeting to your death...

The show did a radical departure from tradition by moving for the first time ever from Saturday evening to twice weekly showings during the week which meant the season only lasted three months. When I was a kid they would show doctor who on PBS on Sat after cartoons around noon here in Mississippi and would play full stories parts. This was in late 70s early 80s. One of the characteristics of the original series, which isn't really evident in the new, is that the Doctors are written to contrast with the previous. So the first is formal and stiff; the second is impish and scruffy; the third is a suave dandy; the fourth is anarchic and wild; the fifth is humble and innocent.

I am excited that you have finally reached my Doctor - Peter is the first one I can remember, and to this day I still think of him as being THE Doctor to a certain extent. He has always been one of my favourite actors too, with a whole stack of memorable TV shows to his name from All Creatures Great and Small to A Very Peculiar Practice. The cricket outfit came from the fact that Peter enjoyed playing the game - indeed, JNT first thought of casting him in the role when he saw a picture of him in cricket gear. They had also worked together previously on All Creatures Great and Small, which had first made Peter a star, and got on well. Peter himself was initially reluctant to take the role, as he worried that he was too young for it, but eventually accepted because he couldn’t bear someone else taking the part instead! He was the first Doctor to have been a fan of the show before joining it, as he had grown up watching Hartnell and Troughton, and was a particular fan of Troughton’s Doctor. It’s great to see someone who has already watched the whole show up to this point reacting to the callbacks here, as it makes it much more meaningful and special. JNT was keen to pay homage to the show’s past to please the fans, and just before Season 19 began a special repeat season called The Five Faces of Doctor Who had been shown on BBC2. This gave many viewers their first opportunity to watch the first three Doctors - the stories shown were An Unearthly Child, The Krotons, The Three Doctors, Carnival of Monsters and Logopolis.

@@MarkWardReacts Oh yes! Amazing, isn't it? The only clue is the Doctor's hair length. They even recreated Tegan's red wash and Nyssa's full "faerie princess" costume. The abandoned story was "Project Zeta-Sigma", a kind of anti-nuclear twin-worlds-in-conflict parable which never really came together script-wise (a bit too reminiscent of Meglos's Tigella/Zolfa-Thura perhaps). Bidmead was persuaded to write a sequel to Logopolis and thematically the join is watertight, as if it was always meant to be. Four to Doomsday was Davison's first, then The Visitation, then Kinda, then this. Funny to see the Doctor not being the Doctor when Davison had so thoroughly inhabited the role at least one or two stories earlier, recording-wise.

I think "Logopolis" was the first story I saw as a child, but Davison is "my" Doctor. This is maybe an odd way to introduce a new Doctor, but they were trying something different, and having a larger team of companions, each with different experiences and reactions, works quite well in dealing with the aftermath of a regeneration... although it's a bit odd, now that I think about it, how unphased they are about his changed appearance! Maybe that's an example of the sloppiness or the avoidance of emotion that were issues in "Logopolis". A clear case of sloppiness is that Nyssa says she doesn't know how to work the console, and then a moment later confidently turns the scanner on! This was the first season to be broadcast on weeknights, rather than on Saturday evenings, I believe.

Have always loved this motley family of characters. Though detractors call it a crowded tardis, it works so well, in its contrasts of character and of backgrounds. The best crowded tardis. We all think in hindsight that Nyssa should more neatly have joined as a companion in Keeper of Traken. She seemed like an emerging companion in her scenes with Adric there. Yet she was written for it just as a one-story character: and JNT was impressed and realised too like you did, how they were missing an opportunity, and continued her.

It's absolutely daft and great fun, with one of the "companions" being a very young Trigger (Roger Lloyd Pack) long before Only Fools and Horses. Roger is a good friend of Anneke "Polly" Wills as his actor dad starred with her in "Strange Report" (another excellent series, Anneke is fantastic in it).

In a round of appearances (including, inevitably, Blue Peter) Peter Davison found himself on the BBC's afternoon show 'Pebble Mill at One' to discuss his approach to the show. There wasn't one. in his mind, he was already too young to play the part - setting a precedent for Matt Smith of course - and his instinct was to return to the Doctors of his teens, rather than follow too closely in Tom Baker's footsteps. Asking the fans in the audience that day for advice, one of them famously suggested he play the part 'Like Tristan (Farnon)... but brave!' - and this seems to have provided the actor with something to latch onto. His stint as the younger Farnon brother in 'All Creatures Great & Small' had made him a household name in Britain and after the confidence and freewheeling humour of his predecessor, he opted for something a patch more vulnerable....

But, I do think you will enjoy the 5th Doctor. Even though Tom was my first Doctor, it was the 5th Doctor who I spent most of my childhood with and was the first Doctor I saw from start to end. You’re in a safe pair of hands here :)

@@rnw2739 Good grief, no. You are perhaps looking at it as someone who may have binged it, but for me, I was 4 when I first watched Tom as The Doctor, but that was in 1979 and I only got two seasons of him and was traumatised when he left. Tom for me is the definitive Doctor, with infinite charm, wit, intellect and kookiness. He embodied the role like no one else. I look forward to the day when I can push a button and make my own AI Fourth Doctor stories ad infinitum :)

I was a huge Tom Baker fan (he's still my favourite Doctor) but even I was looking forward to a new Doctor and the excitement and anticipation. I was 15 and would read everything I could about the new season before it aired. I wouldn't get this excited about a new Doctor announcement again until Eccleston.

Traken, that corner of the Universe was just destroyed by the Entropy field :( SO the Master is all that's left of her family and her people :'( And Troughton's first story was Power of the Daleks :) Missing episode. Patrick Troughton's first story was The Power of the Daleks - set on the planet Vulcan. :) I get what you're saying about Tom Baker but his Doctor's main weapon was humour - he used to make his enemies underestimate him... but he would still explode with rage when it was called for... remember his anger and disgust at the Captain in The Pirate Planet for example. Peter Davison was the Doctor when I first started watching the show properly... though I wasn't yet in at this point. There's plenty of great stuff ahead in his era and I'm already trying to guess in my own mind which of this stories will please you most. :)

welcome to the true 80's and a massive change in the programme! Not the best ending to my favourite doctor but a real breath with the new one. I knew Peter as a Tristan Farnon from All Creatures great and small (a book and tv series from James Herriot about his life as a country vet in the English country side in the 30's and 40s - if you havent seen or read them, you really should!!!) and assorted other roles Did you notice the theme is a little different this time? After nearly 20 years with basically the same theme it was the first of the changes (no spoilers, you would have noticed all of the modern doctors have their own theme!) The zero room was an interesting addition and it was great to see more of the inside of the TARDIS, but you should have heard the uproar back in the day about the scarf unravelling! How dare they unravel his scarf its the scarf - well no it isnt, it was the one he wore in his last season, Now if it were THE scarf that would be bad, for the modern kids, that would be like burning 9ths leather jacket, or 10ths trench coat!! And the masters back, this will be fun!. While 5th is not one of my favourites he has a great run, buckle up for another wild ride!

It's interesting that you're not as sad about Tom leaving as you had been with Hartnell, Troughton or Pertwee. I love Tom, he's still my favorite Doctor, but he'd been in it so long that maybe you (and we, back in the day) were ready for him to move on. He himself has said that he maybe should have left a year or two sooner. If you look at him in "Robot" and then in "Logopolis", you can see how noticeably he'd aged.. Thinking about it, there were kids in elementary school that had never known any other Doctor. It must have been really strange for them to see someone else playing the part.

This is a change isn’t it! Gone are the dark colours and the scarf, in comes a cricket player and sandwiches on the green. I liked his outfit only his trousers, if you look, remind me of that fabric they use on mattresses, lol. It must be the cricket but I he always makes me think of summer and the smell of fresh cut grass in the air. Event 1, the TARDIS has gone from zero room relaxation to Turkish bath steam room in the tap of a consoles co-ordinate register!

Just been watching Dallas Cavell, the Head of Security, in The Avengers (1963). Very exotic! His Dr Who roles were much nastier - getting whacked in the face with a spade by Hartnell, nearly killing Ben, and working as a traitor against UNIT (as did almost everyone in that story, Ambassadors of Death - see also Invasion of the Dinosaurs! Talk about "Trust No-One"!

One thing that always threw me off about this episode is how accepting the companions are of everything that has just transpired; the Master killing both Nyssa and Tegans loved ones and the Doctor regenerating right in front of them. They all just seem to go along with it because the plot demands it. This is the same sort of thing that people condemn the Chibnall era for.

With Castrovalva being the fourth story produced this season, and their limited production budgets, I can see why they made Peter wear dress shoes instead of riding boots like Tom had. As a kid, though, it always irked me.

This always gives me a buzz because, having been a casual viewer for a couple of years, the bonanza of publicity around both the show's history and the incoming new Doctor (the first I could remember in my lifetime) turned me into a fan. 'Castrovalva' (based - for reasons that become clear - on a lithograph of the town of the same name in Abruzzi by the artist and visual illusionist M.C. Escher) was therefore my gateway into the show as a full-time obsessive. Within 18 months I was a paid-up member of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society (you got a photocopied newsletter on coloured paper, stapled together in the corner!) and I think I can safely say it's the one thing I've really clung onto over the years. Of course, back then the idea of the show being in any way sexy and followed by young women on Instagram was for the birds...

In regards to Russell T Davies returning as showrunner I'll be honest I have mixed feelings about it I mean don't get me wrong it's great he's returning for great writing rise but I don't want him to repeat the same thing he did back in 2005-09 Example I don't want to see Eccleston or Tennant back as regular Doctors and I don't want Rose, Martha or Donna to return because they had good endings why ruin that? Also the show is about moving forward and I'm just concerned he will do a few steps backwards and I also don't want it to get too political. The scene where The Fifth Doctor was unravelling the scarf caused some upset in fandom at the time and apparently Tom Baker was not happy about it. I do like the bit though when he's going through a regeneration crisis and acts like The First Doctor then the Second and mentions few past companions until he finally decided who he wants to be. Also Patrick Troughtons first story was "The Power of the Daleks" (complete missing story) which was set on the planet Vulcan and at the beginning takes place in the TARDIS after they left the south pole in "The Tenth Planet" at the time the Second Doctor still wasn't quite use to earthlings or Earth and was still on the run from The Time Lords until his regeneration into Pertwee.
