At time of writing, Arnold Yarrow - who played Bellal, or "Barry" - is still going strong at the age of 100.

A great score for that story. I loved Sarah and Belal's friendship. He would have made a great companion. Jill and Sarah also worked well together. Nice conclusion. 😊

In the Matt Smith episode ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ when the Doctor goes into the intensive care section there is a brief mention of Exxilon...before he replies ‘These are the Daleks that survived me’

The way they did the city melting at the end was so clever, it was made from polystyrene and had a heat gun / blow torch aimed at it. Happy Birthday Mr Pertwee.

The 5 piastre coin. Piastres were used in the currency of French Indochina, the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, Jordan, Cyprus, and Lebanon. The French colonial coin was equal to the Mexican peso, and the Middle Eastern ones were equal to 2p (1/120th of a pound sterling). The Doctor is widely travelled, and although he doesn’t commonly use currency, he does tend to pick some up here and there.

Each season there is at least one character who you would like to have joined the TARDIS crew at the end of their adventure and become a regular. For me Season 11’s character is Bellal (AKA Barry) the Exxilon.

I've imagined for years that when we see the 'Dalek View' what is really happening is the little Dalek mutant inside is using the emergency back up system and physically holding its eye up to the inside end of the tube.

I do like the idea of puzzles being used as an IQ test. The maze was a good example of solving something by putting your mind to it. But the logic of this hopscotch puzzle eludes me. What, exactly, are you supposed to do to safely figure out how not to get fried? The bottom line seems to be that if you didn't bring a sonic screwdriver with you, then you are toast.

Funnily enough, although I understand your reasoning when it comes to the resemblance of the city to the Dalek city on Skaro (Which was originally cobbled together from junk and had to be rebuilt, fact fans!), continuity didn't really apply so much back then. The origin of the Daleks was still a bit vague at this point; a situation not helped by Terry Nation coming up with alternative versions along the way.

One of the things the Pertwee Dalek stories don't seem to learn is: If you're going to respray the props, don't give one of them a different colour or a different colour set of head-bulbs. It makes it pretty obvious there's only four of them...

The deadly floor trap is a really good way of showing the difference between the Doctor and the Daleks. He solves problems with intelligence and resourcefulness. The Daleks solve problems by shooting at them.

So next time you order a bulk electronic item like a Smart TV, don't throw away the polystyrene. Simply use it to re-enact the final moments of the City of the Exxilons. And don't imagine I haven't thought about it...

Discovered this episode has the production code of XXX. Wink wink, nudge nudge. It's also a bit 70s. Jill is a civilian after all, cause clearly only manly men can join the Marines. On the other hand Sarah basically clubs the snot out of that Exxilon inside the TARDIS. Just sort of glossed over really but Sarah really works that guy over with the winding handle. Other thing to note is that there are only three moving Daleks at any one time. Apparently after blowing the models up so readily in early seasons the BBC were mildly embarrassed to discover they only had three working versions when they came to start filming this episode. I sort of still like this one. I remember being scared as a short person, and finding the fact the Daleks and the humans were working together fascinating. I vaguely remembered a bigger plot twist at the end - like they got into the 'brain' and discovered something profound but they just get in there and switch it off.

This is one of my favorite JP stories, but I think they should of named it something else because the story is not about the Daleks, they just happen to be there along with everybody else. When I was getting back into Who in the 90's I kept thinking this was called City of Death.

It would make so much more sense to call this one City of Death than the story that would later get that title.

Not the Daleks best outing. They get killed by a primitive race with spears, humiliated by a root and outwitted by an ornamental floor. The story of the City is infinitely more interesting.

I'll go 8/10 on this one - but a very strong 8. :) It's just a pity that the Daleks never found out they'd loaded useless bags of sand onto their ship... that would have been a nice moment before they got blown up. :D

@GrilloTheFlightless

Absolutely. The comic-spooky music cue used for the Daleks really undermines them. Incidentally, the composer was Carey Blyton, nephew of children’s author Enid Blyton of Noddy and Famous Five fame. He also wrote the popular children’s song Bananas In Pyjamas.

Not sure what's missing from this story for me, because it sounds good on paper. If you compare it to Planet of the Daleks from the previous season though... I think what stands out is that in that story the cast of characters is far more interesting and the stakes develop throughout. Death to the Daleks sets up a mystery and a conflict, and then spends 3 episodes letting it play out more or less how you'd expect. I think what you said about it not being a great Dalek story makes sense. They don't seem strictly necessary to the plot... and in fact the whole thing might have been more interesting without them. I'd be interested to see this w/ a different musical score too -- the Dalek theme just gets on my nerves! Sarah becomes one of my favorite companions... if not #1... but I really missed Jo in this story. It's about a 6.5/10... I actually enjoyed The Mutants more this time through, and I always had that as my least favorite Pertwee story.

That's a very summery look! This isn't a bad story, but it does feel a bit too much like past Nation Dalek tales to me; he had a good excuse for plagiarising himself with Planet of the Daleks, as that was a tenth anniversary celebration, but this time it feels a bit lazy. Carey Blyton's music also feels really inappropriate and annoying, and the human characters, with the partial exception of self-sacrificing Galloway, have no depth to them. On the plus side, Arnold Yarrow does give a wonderfully expressive performance as "Barry", the challenges he and the Doctor face in the city are diverting, and I like the concept of the city being a kind of living entity. Overall, I would give it a 7 - in case you were wondering, the quarry they used this time was in Dorset.

@@johng5859 .....Well you can't blame me, dosn't help that the script is so generic, A baran featurless desert planet, a base/complex/city with grey featureless corridors, Daleks being daleks, Someone with a Bomb or multiple Bombs, The daleks doing some kind of mining operation, it's like a paint by numbers dalek script, the only thing that's missing is escaping up and elevator or ventilator shaft.

Aaron Izzard True enough about this story, though Day is far superior, helped by the fact that Terry Nation did not write it...
