The stories from Classic DW set on contemperary Earth are closer to home to me because they are more realistic in terms of the supporting cast. Everyone plays plausible everyday characters. This didn't jump out at me when I first watched them as a 70s child. But looking back, it really stands out. Classic DW is the era for me.

A great reaction!! - & your wee face when we see Forgill Castle!! :D The whole feel of this is very gothic horror, thanks greatly to Douglas Camfield's direction & lighting, - that nurse creeping about in the woods! & the eyeless socket of that stags head + we keep saying it but those Zygon costumes _are_ amazing, little wonder Jim Acheson went on to win oscars for costume design! I think he might have worked on 'Man of Steel' too? I love those massive explosions in the Loch! & there's something about the Zygons situation always reminds me of the 'Axons' with the organic tech & just generally the 'alienness' of them. And who doesn't love a secret door "behind ze bookcase!"📚🔦

Not to also sound like a total psychopath but I also enjoy the killings! Characters meeting untimely, and often grisly ends is part of what builds the sense of threat in a Doctor Who adventure. Victories should feel like they came at a cost. I have friends who won't let their kids watch Doctor who today for the fear that they'll be traumatised by it. I would think that surely wrapping a child in too much cotton wool is just as damaging. As a kid I found the mild horror offered by Doctor Who to be awesome! But maybe that's why I grew up to be the loony I am today!

Exciting that you know that pub - you made me smile when talking about walking on the same ground as Benton! You may know this already, but "Loch Ness" is Furnace Pond in Crabtree. For the time, the effects work showing the Zygon ship rising out of the water is remarkably good. The interior, as well, successfully evokes an organic environment - on the DVD commentary, Tom Baker compares the ship's control panel to an American hot pizza. Some nice performances in this episode too. John Woodnutt excels both as the Duke of Forgill and Broton, despite the Zygon costume being difficult to wear. That little character moment between Sarah Jane and Harry is also really sweet, when she recognises he is the real Harry because he says "old girl". If you look at production photos of this story, you will see that the guy playing Caber, the Duke's servant, looked nothing like that in real life.

@alexfletcher51924 жыл бұрын
Let's face it, if this was a Hollywood film (particularly now) they would descend to the Zygon ship by submersible or something, under attack from Zygons with exotic death rays, and maybe the Skarasen, and the Doctor would have to open the airlock at the last minute with the Sonic - They just didn't have the time, the money, or the inclination. Why bother with that when you can use the old 'secret passage behind a bookcase' ploy? Instead, they throw the money where it's needed: the blobby Zygons; their pizza-topping control boards and their strangely hard-shelled spaceship.

I also preferred the classic Who episodes that took place on Earth with UNIT. One reason is that whenever he arrived on an alien world or ship, he generally had to spend at least a quarter of the show convincing everyone that he wasn't the enemy/killer. On Earth he didn't have that problem with the Brigadier. It was almost like he was returning home.

Funny how, in your reactions to Pertwee's first season, you couldn't wait for him to get away and have some adventures in space, but now you're so thrilled to see the Doctor back with UNIT. Of course, a certain tall, handsome sergeant has something to do with that 😄.

The novelisation that came out in the 1970s was called 'Doctor Who and the Loch ness Monster' - confusing as no mention of the Zygons in the title!
@ftumschk4 жыл бұрын
I guess they thought that putting Nessie in the title would attract the more general leader. I seem to remember that the Loch Ness Monster was frequently in the media at the time, perhaps reflecting a wider interest in magic and mystery. Books, films and documentaries on ghosts, the occult, UFOs, the Bermuda Triangle and Erich von Däniken's "ancient aliens" best-sellers were hugely popular in the 70s. I know, because I avidly read or watched most of them!
@whobp84 жыл бұрын
It was a standard practice with the early Target novelizations to give them simplified titles to theoretically make them more appealing to children. So The Silurians became The Cave Monsters and Frontier in Space became The Space War, etc. No one would know what the word Zygons meant if they hadn't seen the episode or read the book, but everyone had heard of the Loch Ness Monster

I've never seen the modern Zygons having stopped watching new Who some years ago but these originals still look great now - creepy, scary, covered in sucker shapes that make my skin crawl. I love the spaceship, totally random shape with no attempt to make it look like anything else you've seen before in Sci Fi - very original! The classic series definitely wasn't as kid-friendly when it came to body counts. In fact, many fans have criticized NuWho for it's "everybody lives!" approach. The thing is, without the danger of death, the stakes are always limited. That's why NuWho has lost it's punch -- characters seldom die, and when they do they are often resurrected in some fashion, so no one ever really "dies." NuWho has been notorious for "killing" major characters only to resurrect them one episode later. For example, the opening monologue to _Army of Ghosts_ says that Rose dies, yet the end of the story reveals this to be nothing more than a red herring for audience's sake. Jack Harkness is killed then resurrected. The Master is killed, then resurrected. Bill Potts is killed, then resurrected. On and on. There's nothing at stake and these "deaths" have no emotional impact because I know in the next episode, they'll be alive and well again.
@aregvaetrhg73764 жыл бұрын
Barely any major characters get killed in Classic Who also.
@sixstanger004 жыл бұрын
@@aregvaetrhg7376 You're right, but that's because they aren't constantly "killed" and then "resurrected," because in the classic universe, this is not feasible. When people die, they stay dead. There is no waving a magic wand/sonic screwdriver and pushing some cosmic "reset button." Characters didn't die because death MEANT SOMETHING. It was an irreversible consequence, thus lending to high stakes. In classic Who, you best avoid being shot by a Dalek. Because if you do, that's curtains. In NuWho, if you get shot by a Dalek, it probably just means the writer wrote the scene for cheap thrills and in the next episode it'll all be explained away. For example, Rose is shot by Anne-Droid in "Bad Wolf," and despite this looking exactly like the previous deaths, this ONE instance was actually a teleportation beam to a Dalek ship. Convenient, huh? Then there's _The Magician's Apprentice,_ where Clara is shot and vaporized by a Dalek on-screen, only to be resurrected in the following episode. Jack Harkness is shot by a Dalek in "Parting of the Ways," but is resurrected by Rose. Amy Pond is killed by an Auton in "The Pandorica Opens," only to be resurrected in the following episode. I could go on, of course. But the point is, how many Classic Who characters were "killed" on screen like this, only to be resurrected later?
@aregvaetrhg73764 жыл бұрын
@@sixstanger00 Oh yeah, I agree, Moffat in particular abused that trope.
@sixstanger004 жыл бұрын
@@aregvaetrhg7376 That's an understatement. Rory was "killed" so many times that it became a running gag within the show, a meme on social media, and many fans comparing him to Daniel Jackson's character in Stargate SG-1 (who also had a tendency to "die," only to be resurrected). Moffat's problem was that he often wrote stakes *_too high,_* to the point where he'd be forced to break internal logic in order to write himself out corners. I think River Song is probably the premiere example. He built up her character to the extent of being space Jesus; someone so fundamentally important to the Doctor that there was really no satisfactory answer he could've wrote. In the end, even he had no idea where to go or what to do with her character, so the "big reveal" was that River Song is.... ....the current companions' daughter.

Tom's look at the retreating monster at the beginning of the episode (about 2:12 to 2:14) is probably my favorite moment of the story and never fails to make me laugh....it's so "WHAT did I just witness?" that it looks as though he's reacting to how fake it looks. XD I think the dinosaurs in Invasion of the Dinosaurs looked much better, for all their notoriety (and had a substantially better script behind them). That said, this is probably my favorite episode of this serial. The pacing, character interactions, and story in general take a step up. And that nurse is CREEPY! Love her. And of course I adore the moment where Sarah sticks out her tongue at the Caber! This story may note be a favorite of mine, but it does have some great moments from the TARDIS team.
