Sharez Jek is one of the great Doctor Who characters, simultaneously repulsive, terrifying and even on occasion sympathetic. It’s a terrific performance from Christopher Gable, and the mask, which was based on Zulu designs, is highly memorable. The character is clearly inspired by The Phantom of the Opera, a story that Robert Holmes had previously drawn on for The Talons of Weng-Chiang. You are right about the dark feel - there is sense of real brutality and impending doom about this story, enhanced by the uniformly great performances and the consistently innovative direction. Just a shame the Magma Monster lets the side down a bit…

A powerful performance here by Christopher Gable. I've often thought that this is what a film version of Dr Doom should be like, half brilliant, half crazy, with a strong element of pathos.

I love that rattle sound in the soundtrack... very evocative of a serpentine presence, which suits Sharez Jek so well.

This is one of Robert Holmes' best Who stories. An evil Conglomerate, an insane vengeance obsessed villain, great camera work, fantastic direction, eerie atmospheric music and sets, an amusing Holmesian double act (one of his signature story elements) in Stotz and Krelper, splendidly portrayed by Maurice Röeves and Roy Holder, the Fifth Doctor is absolutely superb AND there's even a dodgy monster! Great stuff.👍

Here we have one of the show's greatest writers (possibly the greatest) towards the end of his career paired with one of the show's greatest directors at the beginning of his career - the magic was kind of inevitable. :)

I've seen this - as you can probably imagine - A LOT and yet still that feeling (you're probably imagining a kind of unstoppable countdown in your head that the Doctor's one-liners are not quite overcoming) is always present in it. And with good reason...

Sharaz Jek is a character described something similar to "The Phantom of the Opera" because of disfigured man attracted to beautiful woman atleast that's the vibe I get from the character a most tragic character and another one of the best one hit wonder villains in Doctor Who history. Originally this role was intended for David Bowie.

As a Bowie superfan, I must confess that I sincerely doubt he would have been as brilliant as Christopher Gable in the role of Sharaz Jek.

'It's a bit dark, this story...' - Well, that's actually why it's so well-loved! I admit I didn't really see the point of that at the time. I have a feeling it's because sci-fi itself in the mid-1980s was going down a similar route all around. Genre shows from the US tended to be based around guns and implacable aliens (including, literally, the Alien) and lots of hardware. And of course we're back there again with the various Batman films et al. Still, we've got the most honourable Doctor of all surrounded by people with literally no morality at all. And that, at least, gives it purpose and vindication.

Here is the best cure for a Toothache. Buy a bottle of whisky and a packet of cotten buds. Dip a cotton bud into the whisky, sit it on a plate and drink the bottle of whisky. When the bottle is empty, you can suck the cotton bud.

Sharez Jek is never less than a monster, especially in how he treats Peri, yet at the time their is a sympathetic element in how he became this monster. Everyone in this story is very much a victim of their circumstances, except Morgus himself who is the real corporate monster.

One unfortunate oversight in this episode, in fact the only thing that really takes me out of it is the fact that Jek is able to make perfect lookalike and sound alike copies of the Doctor and Peri and swap them within about two minutes, also why would he bother? Having rescued Peri and (possibly reluctantly) the Doctor why would he bother. It’s a great cliffhanger but an impossibility and it only makes sense because the viewer thinks the main characters lives are in jeopardy. Also we have General Chellak ‘starting to believe’ then next minute ordering their deaths. It’s a mess but I absolutely love this story and that’s why it matters so much. My second favourite story after Talons.

It probably feels like we haven't had the 5th Doctor for very long because we had the previous Doctor (Tom Baker) for 7 years. But Jon Pertwee only lasted 5 years.

Yes, Tom Baker did hog it quite significantly and his last few seasons were quite tedious to wade through. I think everyone collectively thought 'At last!!' when he finally fornicated off.

Shame a couple of great moments in this episode were cut from this reaction. I love the line about him being more of a tennis player than a cricketer - presumably a dig at John McEnroe. Most of the main cast of this story are dead now. Most recently we lost Maurice Röeves and Roy Holder.

Don't apologize for wearing the same dress if it suits the heat I hear Britain is experiencing at the moment. It's been jolly _cold_ in South Australia, lately, But come an Aussie Summer heat wave, and I'm not really concerned about wearing the same cloths which I'm limited to under such conditions!

Quite simply one of the greatest written stories in Who history with two of the greatest human antagonists, the power hungry Morgus, and Sharaz Jek, a villain who the audience slowly sympathises with. Ironically, The Doctor and Peri are nothing more than accidental supporting characters in this plot.

There is a new reaction channel, the Shallow Proclamation, hoping to do all DW + all spin-offs! but starting with Classic. It's 2 men: Paul who has seen Classic, guiding Thomas who has not. When they started, I posted how important it is that they need to cry sometimes, for men being allowed to: for equality with the women reactors. They have not yet. There is an anazing coincidence in where they are, and this. They are on ep4 of The Keys of Marinus, where Barbara gets harrassed by a crook trader she has been left alone with. Your reaction to that ep does not make an issue of that scene at all. Theirs focuses on it, on what a controversial episode it makes it, and thinking it would never be accepted to make it now ? I remembered its parallel to Sharaz Jek's creeping at Peri here. This was made 20 years of progress later than Marinus. In both cases, surely as the offender is a story villain, it's being shown critically, not endorsed.

I have followed Shallow Proclamation for 2 years since making the above post. Belonged to their Discord community too. Now, on the day of their reaction to Daemons part 4, I'm done and utterly rip up my former impression of them. To stay even half civilised, with any spark of caring heart at all, is defined by an off the scale disgust towards such thing as loving the Wicker Man and having it as a favourite film. Physically sick

Of course if Graeme Harper (who has since done rather more work on the RTD era than he ever did for classic Who) had managed to get David Bowie for Sharaz Jek, we'd all be talking about that. Instead of the 'Magma Creature' that, for some, overshadows part of this production in the same way that, say, the sock-puppet Skarasen in 'Terror of the Zygons' ruins that adventure for a minority. Fortunately, this is a story with more than one great cliff-hanger.

I read that David Bowie was suggested to play Sharaz Jek. Bowie used to frighten the life out of me . In 1974 he came out with an album called "Diamond Dogs". The first track is called " Future legend" , the howl at the start used to terrify me so much I would scream and cry, I was only 5 at the time. Check that song out and you'll see why.
