@@rnw2739 Longevity is no indicator of quality? Wrong! It is most definitely an indicator of quality! A show like Doctor Who does not endure for 20+ years and make a huge comeback after a 15-year hiatus unless it has *some* quality. As for the recent trend of New Who spitting in the fans' faces, that has nothing to do with RTD. RTD brought Doctor Who back from irrelevance through good writing, good actors, and good direction. So yes, I stand by my claim that no, actually, RTD classics is not an oxymoron.

Robert Glenister played Peter Davison's brother in a sitcom from shortly before this story, called Sink or Swim. Its premise was not entirely dissimilar to that of Only Fools and Horses, which started 1981. Two brothers on the make, basically. In fact, Davison does his best to not look Glenister in the face, as he would invariably crack up. There is a moment coming up where they to be face to face, and you can just see Davison's mouth start to twitch just before the edit to a different scene. On the story itself, this is widely considered to be one of the best, if not *the* best, stories of the 20th century run of the show. It could be argued, however, that it also signalled the show's death knell. Due to its hand-held camera work, and dark script, everything following it didn't or couldn't live up to the promise of The Caves of Androzani. That isn't to say that show isn't worth bothering with anymore, but that expectations were raised and then dashed almost immediately. As I say though, the upcoming seasons all have something to recommend them. In my view, at least.

In addition to Doctor Who, Peter Davison was co-starring in a sitcom with Robert Glenister called Sink or Swim at this time, in which they played brothers. They found it very difficult to act opposite each other in this, because every time they looked each other in the eyes, they wanted to break up laughing. Peri's American accent vanishes completely for a moment when she says the word glass at the beginning of the episode.

Interesting fact about this story I just realised: This is the first story since season 15s opener Horror of Fang Rock to feature on 1 companion at all. And that was Leela. Discounting Robots, first since Meglos with Tom/Lalla. Tegan’s first exit in Time Flight and that brief period with Just Nyssa before Tegan reunited with them in Amsterdam in the following story is the only period we had 1 companion but that wasn’t a full serial. Quite a big period between a story with just Doctor/1 Companion.

@@stimulusrespond i know theres some of Just Nyssa in the Time Flight/ARC of Infinity gap. Unless theres any of just K-9 mark 2 between Invasion of Time and The Ribos operation I don’t see any other possible between when we get K-9 mark one until Peri. The others overlap companions Obviously a K-9 is there for Leela/Romana’s Duriation. But a brief period after Doctor leaves mark 1 with Leela and unpacks tHe 2nd before Romana leaves, Don’t know how long K-9 was out of the box for in Ribos. Even if he’s relegated to TARDIS in a couple stories like Destiny and City. Adric arrives before Romana leaves, Keeper is weird but it introduces Nyssa and is essentially the first part of a trilogy that the 3 stories honest feel more like a 12 parter at times, Obviously Tegan joins in Logopolis and Nyssa properly, Adric dies, Tegan leaves then the gap of Just Nyssa for off screen stories of just 1 companion. Turlough joins before Nyssa leaves, Kameleon is on board Tardis soon after, Peri joins story after Tegan leaves and same as Kameleon dies and Turlough leaves. Also somewhere in this timeline he’d build Mark 3 to send to Sarah

As others have mentioned, this story marked the return to writing duties on Who of renowned former script editor Robert Holmes, five years after his last contribution, The Power of Kroll. Originally Eric Saward had approached him to script what eventually became The Five Doctors, but Holmes struggled with having to bring back so many old characters and monsters, and ultimately walked away from the project. As an admirer of his past work on the show, Saward was still keen to work with him, and instead offered him the chance to write a completely original adventure for Season 21. This classic was the result, one of Holmes’ finest scripts for the show and filled with his trademark memorable dialogue and characterisation. Graeme Harper’s innovative direction also has a lot to do with the story’s success. He had previously worked with the great Douglas Camfield, Classic Who’s finest director, and produces work here that stands comparison with Camfield’s best - Harper is also the only director to have worked on both the old and the new shows. I was wondering if you would recognise Robert Glenister, who was 23 when this was made.

I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect that the box under the Doctor's robe at the end may have been wired for explosive squibs to simulate bullet hits. I thought I had read somewhere that they shot the scene two different ways, with and without the squibs going off, and decided that the one with them was just too violent. I could be entirely wrong.

The feeling of getting through Fifth quickly surely is a tribute to enjoying him. Keen to say that as he's my favourite, but he does share some of the earnestness and taking it seriously quality of your favourite. By KZbin dates you have been on him for 9 months - it was last Halloween that you were on his arrival. You were on Second for 8, First and Third for 7, were doing less other shows then so going faster, just saying you been on Fifth for a comparable time. Same as, he did a comparable time in number of stories, but we know that by his time stories had got shorter.

Bob Glenister's first appearance in the show (ahead of playing Edison more recently) is far from his first run-in with Peter Davison. They had already starred together as the leads in BBC sitcom 'Sink or Swim' (in fact Davison was at least as well known for comedy as drama when he was cast). He seems fairly well satisfied to have been in the serial most fans still rate as the greatest one ever committed to VT.

That's understandable that you feel like you went through the 5th doctor rather quickly. After 7 years with Tom Baker and 5 with Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison's era is a bit smaller in comparison. @@robertkramer2271 In Patrick Troughton's defense, when he did it, he did 45 episodes a season. Which culminated to doing the show all year long as well as always being on a strict deadline to get each episode done by. He was exhausted by the third year. As for Peter Davison, he was doing half the episode count and had some breaks between seasons to be able to work on other projects. Different work environments.

'As long as you explain the celery before I leave?' said Peter Davison, right back at the start. Well, they did that! This story actually rather depressed me at the time - for reasons that become more and more apparent as it goes along - and it initially surprised me that it was so feted. Most of the acclaim seems to be pointed to Graeme Harper as Director; once featured as one of the faces seen during the mind-tussle in 'The Brain of Morbius' and since canonized as a 'missing incarnation' of the Doctor, thanks to 'The Timeless Children'. Doctor Who Magazine readers, on the other hand, were more blown away by the return of the Daleks at the time and opinions on that seem to have varied a lot too.

When this series first aired on TV, I could feel like the Doctor was gradually being backed into a corner and something ominous was approaching. As a fan who understood that the future of the show itself was in question at the time, it kind of magnified the drama. First Adric dies, then Nyssa leaves. Turlough joins but brings with him a dark vibe because of his secrets. Tegan and the Doctor seem to get more irritable towards each other, then she leaves and the long-standing TARDIS family is finally broken up. The Doctor now only has Peri, who is someone he hardly knows and who is still coming to terms with the dangerous situations she now finds herself in. Tricky time for the Doctor.

And "glass" is so clearly "mis-pronounced". It's almost accented. And it's such an unlikely word to slip up on. Every English person knows the common American pronunciation. And it was on film. In the studio a slip might be left in because of the long takes with several cameras and limited time. On location they just don't do that. They film several takes and usually rehearse immediately before. It seems very unlikely that such an obvious goof would slip through, especially with Graeme Harper directing.
