See weed would make this story much easier to understand. It reminds me of the classic Star Trek episode 'The Devil in the Dark' from Mar. 9, 1967 in which miners are being killed and their machines destroyed by a creature called a Horta. Spock mind-melds with it and discovers the truth much as the Doctor did. Turns out they were destroying its eggs, it was defending itself and could help the miners dig tunnels much faster than they could on their own.

When they sit around a table these days and decide what is and what is not feasible on the budget, I'm reminded of the days when a giant green (or, if you're Terrance Dicks, 'gween') balloon monster, driving a space egg, weaved an aluminium shell around a neutron star. I mentioned in a previous reaction how the first part of this season coincided with the launch of the equally bonkers Dr Who comic strip (go and ask someone about 'Beep the Meep' for further info) and this serial feels like it may have been lifted from the pages of Doctor Who Weekly. Possibly with tweezers.

I like Organon too. He's a highpoint of this story for me. I especially like the Doctor's joke about looking at Organon's horoscope and seeing he was going to die of indigestion. The way Erato devoured the wolfweeds so quickly makes me think he'd have made a good ally against the Krynoid. Or against the seaweed from Fury From the Deep.😉

The whole season is so Douglas Adams.... This deserves the extra half mark just for the giant willy and Tom’s, um, interaction with it. All it needed was some killer seaweed and it would’ve had the lot

How did I miss this video? No notification, and didn't spot it until the thumbnail appeared on my homepage today. This story is... Different, certainly. But I do like it, much as I do the rest of the season. Next story is also a favourite. Perhaps Nigel and Trevor might be silenced by some food? Just make sure it isn't sentient seaweed.

Lol you missed Part 3 did the seaweed eat your recording of Part 3. Your room is looking fantastic and yes we had thunder lighting and rain last night here to and also all day. This story is a bit slow in some parts I would give 7 and a half. 😀

A question for you MC, and some info. Did you know the season 17 final story is a " missing" story completed with animation , like the Troughton ones. Yes, a colour missing story!! Not missing because it was wiped, but because of a strike. Might not be on britbox. Also , trying not to give anything away here, when BBC released the dvd few years back , the story was completed as one long episode.

The season 17 was the first I saw age 5 the seaweed wolf weeds scared me remember thinking the fella in the leather clothed who I thought was a villain who wasn’t in fact a baddie This was the first story made snd shown third , Romana 2(Lanka ward) said she didn’t like making it as was trying to be too much like Romans 1, but was allowed to play if like herself later on organon actor Geoffrey Boyle plays the first doctor in big finish audios The writer to this David fisher wrote the previous story original draft for city of death massively re written by the editor Glad you liked it, it’s normally regarded as 2 of Tom bakers worse 3 stories The joke about hid lucky number had been done in power of kroll Noe for episode 3 and the fact the film crew were laughing. Behind the camera when Tom Baker picked up the creatures tentacle to blow in it

I was gonna make a joke about how Erato looked like a ball of seaweed, except that Scaroth's head in the previous story was more like a ball of seaweed. Maybe there's a theme running through this seaweed-son of plant based jokes.

Myra Frances' 'compromising' freeze-frame couldn't be any more controversial than her participation in the first on-screen lesbian kiss on British TV (the recipient being that other grand dame of UK telly, Alison Steadman). I'm not sure that stands comparison with Tom Baker apparently giving some kind of oral satisfaction to the green jelly monster - but then it probably wouldn't have occurred to people quite so much then. Tom was always mindful of the fact that he was a hero to kids and his vaporous presence in Soho drinking dens wasn't the subject of tittle-tattle as it might be today. Certainly he couldn't have hallucinated anything more bizarre than the day job.

To be completely honest I enjoy this story quite a bit more than either of the previous two. It’s certainly very odd and you can tell an extra plot had to be introduced into the final part or the episode would end too soon, but I find it loads of fun and the setting in particular is so well realized. People rave about how good the jungle set from Planet of Evil was, way back in Season 13, but I tend to think that one doesn’t quite look real, and distracts me a bit from the story. Really it’s a load of old seaweed next to this story’s jungle.

Can you do an overall list at the end of season 17 with worst to best ? As it's difficult to tell with the same score which you prefer. Because "see, we'd" like to know the order of preference !

Oh yes, it was a bizarre one. It has its fun parts though. And Geoffrey Bayldon was great as Organon. And although he was green, Erato did not look like seaweed.

I give this one a solid 8/10 for sheer enjoyment. It started out a bit weird, took a few weird turns along the way and finished weirdly... If there's one flaw I'd pick up on with this story it's that Adrasta dies with about two thirds of the final episode still to play out - so, with the main seaweed gone, the story loses its way a bit at the end.

Not the most popular story with fans, this one, but still preferable to eating seaweed. I think your score is pretty fair, as it is an enjoyable and faintly surreal romp. Eileen Way, who plays Adrasta’s mean old sidekick who kills the outrageously Fagin-like bandit leader, had previously appeared as the old cavewoman in An Unearthly Child, nearly 16 years earlier. The model sequence, where Erato does his weaving around the neutron star, had to be reshot because the original attempt looked rubbish, another reason (along with Tom’s behaviour and the Erato prop) why director Christopher Barry did not enjoy making this. Incidentally, part 3 was Tom’s 135th episode as the Doctor, which meant that he was now the longest serving Doctor in terms of episodes as well as stories, seasons and sheer length of time in the role...

ummm... really don't know what I think about this one. I wonder what it would have been like to come in part way and start watching with a friend who had already seen from the start. They would tell you the bad guys had these weeds. And you would say, No, that would be silly. Then you would get to the bit where the Hunt dude sets them onto the villain and your friend would turn to you and say... "See? Weed!" But yeah. Bit of a mess really. The sub plot with the other woman and the metal bandits is... largely pointless. The neutron star plot is not really foreshadowed and is more or less: - Doctor! A neutron star is coming to destroy the planet! - That would be awful. We must stop it. To the TARDIS - Ya! We are doing a thing that apparently we can do. (shake camera. Let of sparks) - Well we saved everyone If you made an edit where the creature kills villain woman and then goes straight to the guy having to make a trade deal I feel you would have lost nothing. I don't think it deserves hate... but... yeah, it's a tad weird.

In my opinion the shows entire tone and dramatic content improves wonderfully after Tom Baker goes and the next two Doctors are infinitely superior as they play the part seriously and dont go for cheap laughs or silly asides to camera.
