A tragic fate for Nyssa's father, though with a name like Tremas, you're just asking to have your body be hijacked by the Master. Incidentally, Geoffrey Beevers did a solid job here, and it's great that with Big Finish he got a chance to reprise the role so regularly.

Back in 1982 when this episode was first broadcasted in Australia, this was my first recollection of The Master. The significance was completely absent to me. It wasn't until 1983 when a few Jon Pertwee episodes were being shown that I noticed for the first time The Master in his original evil glory.

I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this but Tremas is an anagram for Master and Doctor Who already had a history of using anagrams to hide the appearance of Jon Pertwee's Master as played by Roger Delgado. Also this may have been mentioned as well but if not: the actor that played the Master in this serial, Geoffrey Beavers, just happened to be married to Caroline John (Jon Pertwee's companion Liz Shaw) from 1970 until her death in 2012. He is currently 80 and still playing this role and others in Big Finish audio stories mostly with Tom Baker as the Doctor.

What if the Doctor had regenerated but the Master had somehow taken over the old body and looked like Tom? How weird would it have been to have Tom play the Master? And anyone who has seen his performance in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad knows he would have made an awesome Master.

That final scene must have been very shocking for viewers at the time, as by this point in the show’s history it was very unusual for a story to end with such a dramatic twist - I wonder how many people back then worked out what “Tremas” was an anagram for before the Master possessed him. Geoffrey Beevers does a fine job as Crispy Master - not so crispy as he was when Peter Pratt played him in The Deadly Assassin more than four years previously, but you may recall that the Master is rejuvenated a bit at the very end of that story, which is why he doesn’t look quite so bad here. I don’t think Beevers wanted to be saddled with a mask in any case. As has been mentioned, Beevers was the husband of Caroline “Liz Shaw” John, and had appeared along with her as a UNIT soldier in The Ambassadors of Death back in 1970. As you now know, this was not the last story of Season 18. There were actually 28 episodes allocated to the season, the most since the 60s, so there were four more episodes to go. The clock on the Master’s TARDIS at the end was showing the time as five minutes to midnight, a subtle signal of momentous events to come…

Geoffrey Beevers is wearing the same cloak/costume that was used for the Master in The Deadly Assassin, but the mask that was used in that story had deteriorated by the time this was made, so they opted to use makeup instead to create the "Crispy Master" look. Terrific reaction. Can't wait to see what you think of Anthony Ainley as the latest incarnation of our villainous Time Lord.

Sadly, when I watched this as a kid the impact of the Master's return was somewhat lost on me. I was a bit too young to remember Roger Delgado in the role. I also didn't remember anything from The Deadly Assassin (which is a bit odd because I did remember the end of Hand of Fear). A lot of water had passed under the bridge since then especially for a kid. I quickly worked out from context who he was but I had no real idea of the shared history the two characters had. Thankfully my mother who remember about him, explained more and told me about RD and his unfortunate death. "This type is not really my forte." is up there with "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" for clever references to the Tardis.

I definitely remember watching this back in 1980, and it's probably my favourite story from Season 18. It would have been the first time I'd heard of The Master. I didn't make the connection to his previous appearance in The Deadly Assassin, as I was probably too young to have seen that story as I'd only been around 3.

I remember seeing that episode as a kid and there were a few scenes that were a surprise. One of the tardis rotating in space as I don’t think I had seen it do that before. An entity getting into the Tardis as I thought nothing could get in when the doors were shut. The masters tardis walking and firing lasers and of course the master stealing the body of Tremas.

Having been reduced almost to a vocal performance alone - first by anonymity and then by prosthetics - it's ironic that Geoffrey Beevers would later return to the role of the Master on audio only, for Big Finish. But that's the wonder of this show. You can be in four episodes (mainly hidden from sight!) and still be playing it in a studio somewhere 40 years later!

The lovely thing about your reactions (indeed, any first time reaction) is that they're unaccompanied by any of the commentary that goes on from jaded older fans - some of whom largely pretend to hate things they really enjoyed as a youngster. We're at the stage of sitting on a high stool, stroking our chins in thought, but for you it's BANG, POW, ZAP! And I always look forward the most to these sorts of moments.

Incidentally, I would give this story an 8. There is a lot to like about it, but the weak portrayal of Kassia, the incessant gullibility of the last two surviving Consuls and the eternity it takes the Doctor to work out who the Melkur really is gets a bit frustrating. Glad you enjoyed it so much, though!

So Geoffrey Beevers took over from Peter Pratt here playing the "Crispy" Master as I believe Peter was unavailable, Geoffrey had the same robe as Peter wore and had different makeup with a explanation being that at the end of Deadly Assassin the Master had taken on enough energy to rejuvenate himself, at least somewhat, giving him less of a burnt look and being in less pain. Another explanation being that during his time on Traken the positive energy slowly begun to heal him. I like the first explanation myself.

Impressive music in this season but Traken's takes the cake. I wish the Doctor was pretending, that's how cool this story is. The cure for mad dogs, wow... the Doctor is almost as impressive as the Master in this and the Master's plan is as impressive(ly evil) as it gets. Ditto for The meatballs comment too. Tom Baker was a friend of the Ainley 'dynasty' that begat 'New' Master, Anthony Ainley (disguised behind the groanworthy anagram 'Tremas' - a ruse that was completely unnecessary, except as a private joke). And 'The Keeper of Traken' is the only story on DVD - now Blu-ray - to be blessed with a commentary from the new face of evil. He was something of an enigma, with even the actors he worked with not being able to offer much insight. But he did have a rubbish beard...

I really dislike how they did the ending, the scrappy loose ends unfinished business. If as you are right they did, they missed an opportunity to end this with Nyssa as a companion, which would really fit logically with loss of her dad, then it's a big scrappy fault that surely ifalls it short of 10. We are left hanging with Nyssa cruelly not knowing what has happened, and we don't know we will ever see any resolution of that. They should have placed the bodysnatch earlier, so that * we would see what follows + a resolution for Nyssa, * the bodysnatch would be part of the fight over the keepership, instead of an awkward add-on after the story appeared resolved. * then the moment of doing the bodysnatch could have been the Master's weak moment in the fight that lost him it.
