The Sontarans were introduced to us in _The Time Warrior_ during Pertwee's era. In that story, the Doctor was speaking to Linx, and he concluded that the war between the Sontarans and the Rutans had made its way to 'this planet' - Earth. Also, Linx asked the Doctor: "You've encountered our race before?" To which the Doctor replied in a very direct tone: "UNfortunately!" All this clearly tells us that the Doctor had previous encounter(s) with the Sontarans which we've never been shown.

I do remember how this started in B&W and shifted into colour, with what I thought was a much older version of the console. Knew who two was of course but was only really tangentially aware of Jamie apart from knowing he was in Emmerdale Farm. One of my wishes was we'd had more stories like this. Maybe every few years have an old Doctor (or companion) show up and mostly follow one of their adventures, tie it in to the ongoing story somehow. Maybe not particularly practical but a nice dream all the same.

Great reaction! The Five Doctors actually led to The Two Doctors, because Troughton greatly enjoyed the earlier story and wanted to do another, and JNT had been impressed by the way that Troughton and Frazer Hines had effortlessly resumed their old chemistry in their brief scene together in The Five Doctors, and wanted to bring them both back. Luckily, Frazer was planning to take a lengthy sabbatical from Emmerdale Farm during production of Season 22, so they were able to get this story off the ground. Originally, the plan was to use New Orleans as the main setting and film there, but budgetary limitations stopped this from happening and so the action was switched to Spain. Location filming took place in August 1984, at the hottest time of the summer, which made life particularly tough for the actors playing the Sontarans. They were unusually tall in this one - the lead Sontaran, Clinton Greyn, had previously played the village headman in State of Decay.

Yes, the 3rd Doctor was the first to meet the Sontarans on screen - although he recognised them when he did. :) It's just a pity that the production team here forgot that the Sontarans are supposed to be short but it's seven seasons since they last turned up in The Invasion of Time so it's maybe understandable.

In a Dr Who Magazine interview in the 1980s, Patrick Troughton revealed his favourite stories (which included 'The Mind Robber'), his preference for future versus past (coming down on the side of futuristic) and his desire to return to the show in the capacity of a monster - so he would be unrecognized. He kind of did and didn't get his wish. His third return to the role since 1969 (and only the third of his appearances to be scripted by Robert Holmes) coincided with an upsurge in interest in the black and white era. Back then the likes of 'Tomb of the Cybermen' and 'The Web of Fear' were looked on with the kind of reverence usually reserved for first editions of the King James Bible, because they didn't (as far as we knew) exist. Their reputation turned the novelizations into essential reads. But here the 2nd Doctor is back again in the flesh - accompanied, this time, by James Robert McCrimmon (Frazer Hines - released from Emmerdale Farm) in one of my favourite pieces for him.

I've been looking forward to you reacting to this for a long, long time. 😃 Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines had had a lot of fun appearing in The Five Doctors, (even though Frazer was just a brief cameo) so the production team invited them back to do this story. Well spotted recognizing Jacqueline Pearce from Blake's 7. It was a last minute decision to call this The Two Doctors, it was originally going to be called The Androgum Inheritance. The name Androgum is an anagram of gourmand as they're obsessed with food. While Dastari is an anagram of TARDIS.
@sergiocampanale38822 жыл бұрын
Indeed ... This story went through many changes mostly due to circumstances. However, it did end up with the perfect set up and of course one of the most perfect and iconic 'villain' pairing ever, the magnificent Jacqueline Pearce and John Stratton as Chesnee and Shockeye .... No wonder the show ended up being about them and their escapades while the other characters tended to become background figures. Plus it was an early example of 'bait and switch' with the Sontarans who are still sold today as the main enemy when they are just patsys who are played by the Androgums.
@eddherring49722 жыл бұрын
Happy coincidence that the 3rd Doctor is shown to have met Sontarans before and now we know when that was. Sontarans are supposed to be short and powerfully strong due to the gravity on their home planet Sontar. Unfortunately this has been overlooked here. It was corrected in Nu Who where Sontarans are more or less consistently short. With Kevin ‘Cho-Je’ Lindsay having played Linx, Styre and the Sontaran Marshall there was some obvious continuity regarding height however he passed soon after Experiment (2 months after transmission) and casting was just down to who was available regardless of their height.

No The Second Doctor never met the Sontarans during his tenure this is the only time the Sontarans first appeared in the first episode of Pertwee's final season "The Time Warrior". The theory as to why The Second Doctor and Jamie are here its referred to in fan theory Season 6b that the Time Lords sent The Second Doctor on a mission seconds before his regeneration and Jamie before his memory was wiped and sent home but then they mentioned Victoria which makes the timelines ten times confusing and not Zoe so its assumed its an off-screen adventure but it doesn't explain why Jamie is older and The Second Doctor is grey if that's the case so nothing about this adds up which is really not worth examining we just accept that their there on a mission. I love the scene where the black and white transitions to colour as a nice little tribute as all of the Patrick Troughton episodes were black and white. The villainess in this story yes that was the same woman out of Blakes'7 Jacqueline Pearce. The 1980s were crazy times for Doctor Who.
@TaliesinapCerridwen2 жыл бұрын
As I understand the irl explanation as to why #2 is working for the Time Lords is Robert Holmes got confused and thought it was #2 who went on missions for them rather than #3 and #4 and didn’t bother to look it up (being a mere mortal he was likely just not in the mood since imo this story screams “Damn it Robert! You’re so much better than this!”). The more imaginative fan explanation (which is I hear semi canon nowadays) is that the celestial intervention agency nabbed #2 when he was about to be exiled and force regenerated and let him go on his way in return for the occasional favour, even sweetening the deal by reuniting him with Jamie and Victoria. Eventually (perhaps because #2 kept trying to cut ties with them or because the high council found out and put an end to the deal) the original sentence was enforced. I hear Big Finish followed through with this in a box set called “After The War Games” and I hear alternative explanation is explored in a story called “Black Hole?” Someone pull me up if I’m wrong.

In other media, the novel Lords of the Storm and the audios Starlight Robbery, The First Sontarans, Heroes of Sontar, and Terror of the Sontarans are also favorites of mine. It's said that this story was written by Robert Holmes because he was a vegetarian, but that wasn't the case. The idea that he was a vegetarian is/was a popular story trotted out by some people on the conference circuit, and it's kind of stuck (Nicola Bryant even repeats it in the DVD commentary). However, in an interview quoted in his biography, Holmes says: "I had this vegetarian theme running through [The Two Doctors]. I was trying to point out how filthy it is to eat all this meat, although I’m not a vegetarian. The things we do to animals!" So, whilst Holmes was sympathetic to animals and vegetarianism, this didn't arise because he was actually a vegetarian himself.
