Classic Ferry Video 2007 - Departure of ferry THEOFILOS, Piraeus (NEL Lines)

In 1995 she was sold to the Shipping Company of Lesbos and operated by Nel Lines, renamed Theofilos for the Piraeus-Chios-Mytilini route with occasional calls at Thessaloniki and Lemnos. On June 28, 2008, Theophilos ran aground on a reef of rocks on the island of Oinousses, about 10 N.M. from the island of Chios. She suffered severe damage to her port side hull, a 15-20m broadside cut that caused a watertight compartment to flood, and subsequently developed a list of 2.5 degrees. The ship was repaired, at an estimated cost to Nel Lines' contractor, The West of England Shipowners, of €5 million. Once repairs were completed, she returned to normal service on 16 May 2009. Since January 2018, Theofilos has been lying in Eleusis, Greece (Near Athens) after its owners declared bankruptcy. Since January 2020, it has been under the flag of Togo. The ship was in Poor condition as of 2020 in Perama, Greece and after two years of layover the ship was sold for scrap in Aliaga, Turkey under the name Ilos in 2022.

I have been on her original Sister ship that later became F/B Fedra under Minoan lines, when I was a kid. Still one of my favourite ships ever.

Was on this ship in the early 90's in bass Strait in a force 11 gale and 65 ft waves, very scary, multiple cars and trucks smashed

Thank you very much! I have similar material to SAMOTHRAKI, but not related to THEOFILOS, but EXPRESS PEGASUS, which will come on 14 March 2023 at 12:00 (European Central Time). And 21 and 22 March there will be two very long Piraeus clips, where you can also see many shots that I have never shown before. But you need a lot of time for that.😉

In the 1970s, there was cooperation between the two German shipyards Nobiskrug in Rendsburg and HDW in Kiel. For example, HDW developed plans for ferries that were then built by Nobiskrug (e.g. the train ferry DEUTSCHLAND from 1972). The design of the THEOFILOS is a typical Nobiskrug design. You can recognise the Nobiskrug ship designs of the 1970s very well. I don't know exactly, but it may well be that the design of the PRINSESSE RAGNHILD from Jahre Line (she was built by HDW in Kiel and delivered in 1981) is based on a Nobiskrug design. This may also be related to the fact that the Jahre Line KRONPRINS HARALD from 1976 was built at Nobiskrug. Perhaps a fellow reader can tell you more.
