I'm getting closer to being able to say "everything I own runs" (except the 65 Galaxie). You know what that means, Something is thinking about breaking very unexpectedly & inconvenient-like. For the moment, Carb Cheater is available again at thecarbcheater.com/ until it sells out again - last batch for a few months as we want to spend our time with R&D for a standalone timing control product, and frankly just to catch our breath!

My dad passed away this past January. He left me a 63-1/2 Galaxie with a 427 before he passed (originally a 390 Cruise-O-Matic car). The 427 was the 427 out of his R car he had before starting a family. He kept the engine, had it in a 67 Mustang for a while. Then put it and a C6 in the 63-1/2 in the early 80’s. Hasn’t ran in a couple years. Hope to get it on the road soon.

@@paulym5814 yeah this engine was the first engine I took apart, inspected, and reassembled. I was only 10 years old. We were returning from a car show and experienced oil pressure issues. Once home I tore it apart while my dad was at work and inspected things during my summer break. We discovered that my dad’s friend re-used a gasket on the upper part of the windage tray and used lots of rtv. Well it squeezed out and was clogging the pickup screen. All parts looked good including all bearings. So I re-assembled. It was the first engine I tore down and re-assembled. So that car has a special place in my memories and heart.

@@ThunderHead289 I suppose you're just tall enough to have an excuse for liking fullsize cars, though it still makes more sense to squeeze into the Maverick daily. I generally hop up from midsize cars to boogie vans and never had much interest in fullsize cars like Galaxie, though it is a size that no longer exists, can tow trailers if they have hitches, and at least I can sleep in them sideways across the benches, where I can't quite stretch out across my B200s, though I lived in my B100 for about 2 months, and spent close to another month in a G20, so at least the wagons have some redeeming value.

Luke I like your channel the best out of all of the other car channels. You’re down to earth, down to business and no BS. You educate and explain how the cars are to be fixed, and how they work. You don’t have any sponsorships or any nonsense like that, and I like it. You’re a working man like the rest of us, and I appreciate that. By the way, I have a C5 in my 86 T-Bird that shifts just like your green dot. You can start in 1st, shift to second, then slam it back in 1st to hold 2nd before throwing it in drive. So I think you are right: your trans absolutely was the precursor to the C4, which then birthed the C5 (only difference is having a locking torque converter). If my travels ever land me in your area, I’d love to turn wrenches with ya one day. Thanks for everything, my friend. Keep up the good work!

I vividly remember the ride home from Clinton, in the back seat, marveling at how cool that white interior with black accents looked. I was smitten. Made me a Ford guy for life. Lifelong Ford guy here. Ive owned six mustangs and even a 68 Mercury Cougar XR7, but have really been a Fairlane, Torino and Cyclone guy. Owned a few trucks from a 69 F-100 to a 2015 F-250 Super Duty 4x4 Diesel. Ive owned and worked on just about every Ford engine from 170 straight six to 5.4 modular V8. My 65 "K" code Fairlane. My 67 Fairlane GTA that had a 428cj in it and a 70 Torino Cobra with a 429scj in it that i was the second owner of just to name a few. I had a 66 Cyclone GT FE with four speed from factory with fiberglass hood , deck and fenders. With aluminum bumpers front and rear. These FEs are great motors. I built one for a tow driver friend of mine's roll back.

I convinced my dad to let me do the same thing (remove the valve covers) to his 2-door 1957 Fairlane 272 V8. We found the same thing only worse since my dad never was much for oil changes. I was 14 years old. The next thing he knew, the engine was all over the yard and I was doing my very first full engine rebuild. No problem for him as he had already purchased a 1963 1/2 Galaxie by then so your '64 definitely brought back some memories.

I saw this useful looking implement today at Home Depot. It was a long round stick. With a board stuck across the bottom of it. And the board had thousands of tiny little sticks coming out the bottom of it. A guy was pushing it around the floor in the lumber department and the only problem he was having is that it kept building up dirt in front of the tiny sticks. Anyway, thinking outside the box like I do, it occurred to me that they might have one of those things in Iowa and maybe they'd let you borrow it for your barn floor.

Otherwise, it was mechanically identical to this one. My mother kept the car after he bought a new one in '67 -- it became the car in which I learned to drive and was my favorite car of all of them he had. My dad always believed the 352 FE block V-8 was the best engine Ford ever built. I would love to have that car but I already have a '55 Chevy that is my money pit. Cruise-O-Matic was name given to the green/white dot, dual range automatic transmissions. Early C4 & C6 were Cruise-O-Matics. Name dropped in '67 when the "normal" PRN321 was finally implemented. Same transmission in Mercury were Merc-O-Matic. I owned two '64 Fastbacks. One loaded with 390 & Cruise-O, other 289 & three on tree that was my favorite. I bought & swapped 390 & three on tree drive train from a identical T-boned '64(less than half the miles). @@ThunderHead289 Ford called ALL of them Cruise-O-Matics (CoM), regardless of "Case" Size, which is actually how they are designated. The CoM on your Galaxie SHOULD be an MX, Medium case, which is actually a precursor to the C6 technically, as the "big block" FEs started switching over to C6s starting in '66. The FX is the smaller case, and is actually the precursor to the C4, which is the light duty trans, made for the Windsor series motors. To make it even more complicated, Ford created the FMX - the most common trans for Ford vernacular, which is even MORE different, but is a combination of the FX/MX with modern touches, like a drop in dipstick tube and gearsets similar to a C6, and was built as a heavier duty automatic for the Small Blocks. What gets even more fun is that a Cruise-O-Matic could be a 3 speed OR even a 2 speed in the earlier years, which was previously denoted as the "Ford-O-Matic". Ford in their ultimate wisdom. I am told they are relatively heavy duty, yet I have also broken 2 of them so far in my 62 Tbird and 66 Country Sedan Wagon. They have a few major weaknesses, mainly to do with the valve body design, losing 2nd and 3rd or Reverse is really common.

All signs pointed to "take the money". If I lived closer to a drag strip that might have changed things, but it was a very purpose built car - wasn't going to just easily drive it to work or anything without major changes. So, out the door it went - and it funded several things important to my life here like all my hay equipment. For what its worth, I put a whole can of Seafoam cleaner in my 22R pickup motor and ran it 200 miles. Changed the oil and then put a whole quart of Marvel oil in and ran the motor another 200 miles. "ALL" of the carbon that once came out the exhaust was gone and the oil pressure at idle went from 10 to 25 lbs and the running pressure went from 60 to 75 lbs. Then I ran some "Restore" engine treatment and the power went up about 15% but the mileage stayed the same. Now I put Marvel oil in the gas. 1 table spoon per tank. It's something we all will begrudgingly acknowledge that ended up with more cars/projects than we have time is a way of life. We HAVE the best of intentions for sure but life happens, and time slips by, then before you know it you've got a barn find in your own barn ;)... Or in our case the back of our shop! Good to see the ole Galaxie getting some love and attention, great looking cars and could become a fun comfortable cruiser!

I'm from western IA originally. 4 good months of decent weather is being generous. In 1968, I owned two different 1962 Galaxie 500s. One a 2 dr ht with a 292 and a 312 four barrel manifold. The other 2dr ht had a 406 with 3 deuces, 4:10 rear end and a close ratio 4 speed. It was quick and a real sleeper. Had 352 flags on it for stealth.

I have to say, I've always loved the styling on the 64 Galaxie and the two-tone paint job sets it off nicely. My 65 Falcon Futura 4 door was Twilight Turquoise Metallic and Wimbledon white. I always loved the way it looked when the sun hit it. Great job giving the Galaxie's paint job a bit of love after all these years. 43:25 My God! That tractor is NEKKID!! KZbin will surely put an age restriction on this video!😂 Thanks for letting see the Galaxie resurrection. I really enjoyed it.

Great video. Best advice for the beams you don't like to look at is...close the door. I always liked the 64 Ford. The older I get the more I like them. BTW, the water pump in 1964 had a spot ground off. It was that one year only, and that is why they get 10% more money for them. SMH Don't ask how I know.

The early Ford cruiseomatic transmission would let you start out in 2nd gear which was great on snow covered days. I also worked in a Texaco service station back in the 1960s, it was difficult to sell detergent oil to many of the old timers. Many insisted that detergents in the oil would loosen the sludge causing engine damage. Detergent oil was rated at S/A back then, i miss those days.

I'll mention to the up & coming carb generation to try and not work the throttle on something that has been sitting until you can get some gas in the carb and give the accelerator pump diaphragm a chance to soak up some gas and soften up so you can hopefully get some more life out of it. Glad to see this Galaxie running again!

Enjoyed this video - thanks for sharing. Back in the day I owned a 1956 Ford Fairlane with the Ford-O-Matic 3 speed transmission. The gear selector has P, R, N, Dr, and L. In normal use, the transmission functions like a two-speed, 2nd to 3rd gear, unless you floor it, then it starts out in 1st gear. To drive the car like a stick shift put the Shift lever into L (1st gear) and accerate - then shift into Dr for 2nd gear and immediatly shift back to L to hold 2nd until you reach maximum revs - then shift into 3rd gear.

37:24 I am surprised that you don't wash your equipment more than you do. I'm not much better than you at washing the equipment, but I do wash my stuff once a month or so. Used to do it once a week but as I am in my late fifties now I don't do it nearly as much anymore. Looks beautiful and if you ever desire to get rid of it I will buy it from you, I would just need a little bit of advance notice for me to get you the cash for it, I have not ever nor will I ever buy a car with a check or card. A person who does the stuff you doesn't deserve anything else but cash to do what you want, need, and possibly something that you have to get for something that you need for your equipment or house or something else like that. Awesome work and I am glad you saved the good old Ford FE ride! Always wanted something that had a good old running FE and people who have been putting a Nickel on the carburetor and watch it sit there and balance on the edge of it while it idles! Original piece and looking car makes it that much more appealing and desire to get one sometime soon.

In the late 80s I had the same car as a daily driver; beige with a 390 and power seat. Smooth, smooth ride. I seem to remember dropping the shifter would let the car actually start in second gear instead of first, which was good for slippery conditions. Mine did have ps,pb and a/c. Always wanted an XL model; ‘64 full size just an ageless design.

Ok, just did some research. Looked like the “Ford-O-Matic actually STARTED in second gear. A move to low would begin in first. However, under full acceleration, the car started in first gear in “drive.”

26:37 It will be interesting to see what lives under the valve cover of my grampa's old C10. I will need to do this same job on it sooner or later. During the revival process I've been doing real frequent oil changes(It's due for its third since I got it and I've only put ~120 miles on the thing) and every time I drop the oil it comes out jet black. Detergent oil doing detergent things!
