Part 1 of 2. Classic Game Room reviews EINHANDER for the Sony Playstation 1 from Squaresoft released in 1998. Einhander means one hander in German! Is this the best game on the PS1? For that matter, is Einhander the best side scrolling shooter SHMUP ever made? As far as shmups go, Einhander is a maniac shooting game set in a 2d horizontal scrolling distopian future with the feel of Blade Runner. It uses 3d elements and pushed the PSX to its limits with incredible graphics, gameplay, sound and replay value. Einhander is a side scroller like Gradius III IV or V, Thunder Force or Life Force. But this game is different because it uses gunpods and the mechanized arm that controls them. It's amazing and regarded by some as the best shooter ever made. It also has a light saber, homing missiles and a foxy announcer who teached you things in the training seminar. This game should be remade in 2008, 2009 or 2010 as a Playstation 3 PS3 game or something for Xbox Live Arcade.

This game is an absolute gem.True masterpiece.My favourite shmup of all time !.And right up there with Radiant Silvergun,Ikaruga,Thunderforce ,etc as the best in the genre.

I remember renting this at Blockbuster when the game came out. I couldn't put this game down, it is truly one of the best Shmups I've ever played. I wish they would make a sequel or a remastered version.

This game was an enjoyable kind of hard, plus the weapon selection was huge, the music was kickass, and the designs of the bosses were amazing.

I ate this game up when I was a kid, I finished it completely secret ships and all. I still have it to this day case and manual, this is truly an over looked gem. The music, style, controls, gameplay fantastic I don't remember any lag when the game starts getting brutal around stage four

The first time I saw the japanese game cover when I was a kid I though "Who cool! A game about x-rays!". I still have no idea about minimalistic graphics design back then. So yeah, the excellent artistry behind old game covers is slowly demeaning along with the quality of contents. Oh boy.

Truly an awesome game. It has this incredible vibe. For the longest time, I thought this was a german-developed game that Square only published. Nope, Square did it all in house.

I bouhjt this game as soon as it came out back in 1998. It was so great, so difficult to beat in the hardest level and so perfectly made that no other side scrolling shooter can beat it. I still play it from time to time in my old PlayStation I... It remainds me of my childhood...:)

Im a fan of side scrolling action. Ive played a lot whether its like this, platforming like Contra, Megaman, or ariel shooters like Gradius or Raiden, for example.... Einhander, is still to date one of the most fun Ive ever played. It never gets old

Unlockable ships : A: unkown fighter , levels up weapons when it picks up a gun pod and looks like small police car. B: serene , can use any weapon including juno and flash beat game on hard mode to unlock.

Hands down one of the best PS1 games...I keep this game safely locked away with my other Squaresoft treasures. A lot of games come and go but I'll keep my Square games forever lol. They really define the games of my childhood.

Still have my old copy, one of the first and greatest playstation games I purchased. Thanks for the memories though. I had nearly forgotten how awesome it was. You've got some serious skill though. I used to just toy with the bosses because I wanted to see all of their cool moves.

These 2d shooters were way more fun and challenging than the big budget FPS that we get spoon fed today. I wish game producers would give us more of these on a collector edition disk for PS3 &Xbox. Something like Thunder Force i ii ii iv v &vi. I would pay the going rate of these so called top shelf FPS for a collection like that. If anyone thinks this is a good idea and would put down their hard earned cash for a collection like that in HD, give me a thumbs UP!!!

This game is basically Zone of the Enders as a 2D schmup, especially with the music. I love ZOE...still have both of them, even the one that costs £30 nowadays. Completely worth it. And yes, I *am* boasting ^_^

@214cardenas the technique of the playstation 1 is now nearly 20 years old. So the graphics of the old games were good for its time. Nowadays they look and they are pixelated of course but in those days when we came from super nintendo or sega genesis or something they were awesome. Greetings from Germany. :-)

Salander boss music in einhander is actually a remix of thunder force V 1st stage boss song when fight it underwater. i never notice that until now. Einhander actually pay respects to Thunder Force, thats whats up.

4:34 - lol The last time I played this game was probably 1998 (I was 8) and I just remembered it... and now I really want it. If you position yourself correctly at about 2:54 and keep shooting, you can break through the smiley wall at 3:14 that you would normally turn at and get something nifty, though I forgot what it was...

I had this game on the PS1, I loved it, The first time I played it was on a demo, went running to the store and bought it. I wish I still had it, they sell them on ebay for $50+ If its in unopened mint condition youll have to pay $100+. Same with Rtype Delta.

@Ultrox007 the flash is a railgun that falls out of the rotating thing coming out of the ceiling in level 3 if you destroy every single enemy that falls out of it. It's the most powerful weapon in the game and allows u to kill the first boss in 7 seconds = D also, there are two unlockable ships, and one of them is a red astraea which gives 9999 ammo to one of its weapons. The other is a cop car from the first level which doesn't actually hold gunpods, but has an upgradeable machine gun

crazy that this is the first and only game they've done in the genre and it's still one of the best in the genre. at the time they easily beat out the competition that was far more experienced in the genre. r-type delta on ps1 is also a very good game, but this is definitely better imo.

To get the extra ships you had to beat the game on hard without using continues, and find all the secret bonus points. The red einhander ship is the best.

to get a red einhander ship, you have to get 15 s bonuses. to get the first ship you kill, you have to beat the game on hard (i think). to get the juno, you have to wait for it to pop out of the 1st level boss. to get the mosquito, you have to destroy this weird apc looking thing on level 5. to get the flash, you have to destroy the falling thing on level 3, then ALL of the things that come out of it.if you do it correctly, you will get your wanted flash rail cannon. all of that is from memory.

I picked up a copy of this game and the prices on the physical dics are going up where it costs $100 or more for a new copy. With used ones going into the 50-80 dollar range! I don't even know if this game is available in the west digitally so if you manage to find a decent copy at a good price pick it up! It might be hard to find it later!

I play all my PS games on my PS3 now. The best thing you can do if you care about grapics is play the games on an emulator. I personally like to play most console games on the original system so you get the same controller and feel for the game. Just a word out to all the gamers here.
