I still own my original Playstation with a few games (like Twisted Metal 2, Driver, Metal Gear Solid, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, 2Xtreme, Spyro The Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot Warped just to name a few). This made me a fan of Playstation from the moment I got my hands on a controller. I have so many memories with this console, and still to this day recommend the console if you want a good (sadly, now) classic gaming system.

1:30 I love Nintendo, but Sony kinda smashed them on this one. I mean Nintendo came out with their analog controller and the rumble pack later but then Sony came out with a controller with 2 analog sticks and 2 motors. In my opinion the dual shock is vastly superior controller.

+TheMentalRelapse The beginning of your sentence nailed it. As always, Nintendo brings the innovation and the competitors do copy and paste. To me, the N64 controller is much better, much more innovative and has much more "soul" than the original PSX controller. While the Dual Shock was great (and still is) it only came to existence due to Nintendos controller of this generation.
@TheMentalRelapse9 жыл бұрын
felix8709 I got a N64 before I got a PS. I later traded it for a PS. I think the N64 controller was very innovative and it works great for 3D pladformers but I just prefer the dual shock. To each his own.

While this doesn't apply to certain aspects of life, as a gamer I feel lucky to have been born when I was. I started out on the Atari. I was around for the 8-bit and 16-bit generations. I also got to see the evolution of 3D games and it was incredibly exciting. The leap from the 16-bit to 32-bit generation was absolutely mind blowing. The 90s was such an exciting time for gaming. The transition from the fifth to the sixth console generation was again a huge leap in fidelity and refinement. While the XBOX 360 and PS3 brought HD graphics to console gaming, it didn't have the same impact. We are now at the point of diminishing returns and unless something changes the face of gaming entirely, there will never be leaps forward like we saw with earlier console generations and that makes me incredibly sad.
@SoulSecureOfficial9 жыл бұрын
+napalmhardcore Yeah, dude. I'm just not enthusiastic about the new crap that's coming out. We have the best games ever already and they're even better for us, cuz we remember when they came out.
@napalmhardcore9 жыл бұрын
+Rahmemhotep I personally like both new and old games. What I don't like so much are some of the trends of modern gaming. DLC, micro-transactions and games released with major issues in need of patching are the more obvious ones. When it comes to online multi-player games for example, I hate the fact that a lot of them spend half their life in beta. It takes away all the excitement of waiting for a games release date. It also devalues the game for people like myself that do wait for the games official release, as the majority of the player base have already been playing it for months and will be bored of it not long afterwards. I'm also worried for the future of gaming. I've heard speculation about how in a few years all gaming will be a streaming service like Playstation Now. That scares the crap out of me because it means if something like a license expires or a game doesn't have a large enough player base they will discontinue it. Afterall, it would take up server resources and a host machine to keep that game streamable, so if they can't turn a profit on it they'll want to re-allocate those resources.
@SoulSecureOfficial9 жыл бұрын
It's pretty messed up, but very likely. Companies can't churn out games like they used to due to costs of the ridiculous production standard of today and gaming has been at a down turn for a few years now in my eyes. Indie games are no exception. Most indies are just a sort of counter culture to mainstream big company titles that often take 'nostalgia' and 'retro' factors to a really awful and cheesy point. I'm not saying that nobody makes any good games anymore (Nintendo still does for one thing), but it seems like most are missing the point. This is probably due to the new, massive generation of gamers who won't appreciate a great old romp in the 32 bit era, because the graphics are, "ugly," and the music is not a live recorded orchestra or what have you.
@napalmhardcore9 жыл бұрын
+Rahmemhotep I'm hoping when the time comes that companies try to push the idea of streaming only gaming that people speak up against it. I have not even tried Playstation Now on the basis that it will be one more count to their "this many people have used the service" technique of promoting/advertising. Some might say, "don't knock it until you've tried it", but I'm battling the long term implications that this type of service would bring. I agree with you on the indie point. There was a boom of genuinely fresh and creative games that came along a few years ago, and that is when the indie market exploded in popularity. Now there is this smugness that is displayed by fans of indie titles that gets on my nerves. They overlook how many indie games are just as guilty of the lack of imagination as the triple-A titles they are panning. For instance, if you look at the tags for all the indie titles on Steam and see how many times the terms Metroidvania or Rogue-like are in the tags, or the amount of JRPGs that are basically clones of classic titles. I think kitsch is an appropriate description of the majority of them. I've seen a fair few comments made by younger gamers about ugly graphics. I normally chalk this up to them being too young and ignorant to take into consideration when the games were made and what was standard for the time. On the other hand I've also read comments from younger gamers where they love older games and do "get it", so I guess there is hope. I will add something in relation to that last paragraph. It does annoy me when it is taken too far the other way. While it pretty much goes without saying that gameplay is more important than graphics, I've seen the phrase "graphics don't matter, only gameplay" spammed across various comment sections. It is more the fact that these people rarely have an intelligent argument to give when engaged in a debate. The remark is made without critical thinking like a parrot. I think graphics do matter to a greater or lesser extent dependent on the game. Better graphics add mood, atmosphere and immersion, as does sound.
@SoulSecureOfficial9 жыл бұрын
I agree. I see some people online making the same comment. I'll be the first to admit that sometimes when I try to play a game with a graphic style that doesn't appeal to me or just too many 'ugly' polys or sprites, bad lighting and an awful musical score I tend to not want to play it anymore. The thing is that this doesn't usually happen for me unless the gameplay sucks or the mechanics are flawed or the story is lackluster or contradictory.

Ridge Racer's drifting only really works when in first person, and it takes a bit to pick up. I couldn't play any Ridge Racer game properly until I realized that. The music is also definitely an acquired taste, if you're not a fan of early-90s hardcore techno, you won't get it at all. Probably the most ordinarily enjoyable song in the game is Grip (dunno if that's in the original or only in Revolution). maybe one day you will enjoy the songs Rotterdam Nation '95 and Dat Dan Day...A from Ridge Racer Revolution though, haha one day R4's a great game, but the handling always felt weird to me and I don't think it has particularly great track design, especially coming off of Rage Racer's absolutely amazing courses. It's easily the best looking PS1 game though, period. The soundtrack is standout too, one of the finest around.

It's kinda good that Nintendo pulled the dick move it did 'cause without that we gamers never wouldn't have... -the Game Cube -PS2 -Wii -PS3 -Wii U -PS4 And yes the Xbox's. My point is that competition is good and the true winners are the gamers!
@MiguelVergaraK10 жыл бұрын
if you read into the story, it was all a giant Sony dick move to begin with, Nintendo just realized that and let go. And yes, we do have that to thank for. I think competition's good, but I can't think of a single thing MS has done for gaming that's actually necessary, I would much rather have a Sony vs Nintendo gaming life than a 3 way war (and I do have all consoles, but 3 a gen is just one too many)

@marty1361210 жыл бұрын
Well I wouldn't say 360 beat PS3 at all in terms of games and sales, the Wii on the other was great but I think it actually hurt Nintendo in the long run. Take a look at the Wii U, a lot of people that own a Wii are not the kinds of people that will be buying new systems (Think seniors). Regardless Playstation has never fallen off the map after 4 gens like SEGA and Nintendo's gamecube.
@marty1361210 жыл бұрын
Except thats wrong. PS3 ended up selling second most, and 360 in 3rd. And as for Multiplatforms? You are wrong on that front too GTA 5 (PS3) - 17 million 360 - 14 million Bioshock Infinite (PS3) - 3.10 360 - 2.71 Tomb Raider (2013) - 2.22 360 - 1.71 DMC - .73 360 - .36 Those are just a few examples. There are some big games like Cod, and Battlefield that do sell more then PS3, but by the end of the gen Cod Ghosts only sold .7 more on 360 then the PS3, when compared to the 360 version of Black ops in 2010 sold 2 million more then the PS3 version. I'd say after 2009/10 Sony turned it completely around and in the end bested 360. As far as I see it, Uncharted 2's release, and the slim redesign was the crucial turning point.

Also popularity is not a garant for quality in any way, shape or form. The humour of the masses is not an indicator for a great sense of humour. They can't break 150k subscribers because most retro game channels have a hard time doing this.

***** Maybe it has to do with me getting older, but a channel who reaches more than 100k people is still an amazing thing. And what's bad about not being for anyone? Nothing. I like these guys, and so do all the people too who will stay. There are more than enough channels for everyone. Their format is sustainable enough, because every console will become retro at the right time and then they will cover it. They will never get out of content, but they have to take breaks because of the idea behind their format. I don't have a problem with that. I don't know what the problem was between Gamesack and TGH, but while i like TGH, he is exactly what he is: a historian. While his format is interesting it isn't entertaining. Pretty good episode. I like several of the focuses. However, one thing that many people don't focus on so much: for all of the good original software and contemporary arcade ports, the PlayStation got a ton of great classic arcade and console compilations between North America and Japan. Atari (Atari Anniversary Edition) Atari/Atari Games/Williams/Midway (Arcade's Greatest Hits series, Arcade Party Pak) Activision (Activision Classics) Mattel Electronics (Intellivision Classics) Capcom (Capcom Generations series/Street Fighter Collection series) Namco (Namco Museum series) Konami (Konami 80's Gallery/Arcade Classics, Konami Antiques MSX series, Deluxe Pack series) Seibu Kaihatsu (Raiden Project) Jaleco (Jaleco Collection Vol 1) Irem (R-Types, Arcade Gears: Image Fight & X-Multiply) Sunsoft (Sunsoft Memorial series) That's what I could think of now. Even beyond compilations there's even more old school goodness, like the Arcade Gears series from Xing, the Hamster Arcade Hits stuff, Capcom's Rockman/Mega Man Complete works, budget re-releases from Agetec/A1, Success, Mud Duck, D3... so much fun stuff.

And constant moving started to eat the plastic away, so the rail became uneven and therefore the sled (and the laser-diode) was tilted to one side. That made it so, that it could not properly focus to disc anymore. When you turned the machine upside down, the sled rested on the bottom part of the rail, which was still straight so it could read properly. Of course, that too was slowly worn and you got the same problem again. They fixed this later, by making the rails from metal...

What about it? Both (together with the SNES) are indeed Top Tier Konsoles but still, imo, the PS1 is the only Legendary Tier one.

Kevin Mintahafari where did you get ps2 and dreamcast from yeah they are great systems no doubt about it but they can't beat the classic iconic legendary and my favorite system of all time the ps1

Beyond MK I agree the ps1 is my favorite system of all time and it had so many awesome games like twisted metal 1 and 2 final fantasy 7 and 8 and then the ongoing tekken series and honestly the very first game that I played for the ps1 was twisted metal 1 that's why it's my favorite game on the ps1 and it will always have a special place in my heart ☺☺☺
@culturedbrother8 жыл бұрын
Sure. I mean, almost every console has its top tier, maybe even legendary tier (like the PS2 and SNES), games but looking at the PS1? The iconic "Final Fantasy" Series (and my favorite one is on there (FF8)), the start of the "real" Metal Gear Solid, the start of the "Gran Turismo" Series, the best "Ridge Racer" game (Ridge Racer Type 4) to date, the start of real Horror (for home-consoles anyway) with "Resident Evil" and "Silent Hill", back then the underrated but now considered a legend of a game "Legend of Dragoon", its first mascot called "Crash Bandicoot" and the jump to success for Naughty Dog (with "Uncharted" or "The Last of Us"), real vehicle combat with "Twisted Metal" or "Destruction Derby" and too many games to count. "Tekken", several "Tales of ..." games, "Vagrant Story", "Jade Cocoon", "Wild Arms", "Xenogears", "Suikoden", "Driver", Spyro the Dragon", "Rayman", "Rival Schools", "Castlevania SotN", "Einhänder" (generally the PS1 was a paradise for SquareSoft back then), "Hard Edge", "Tenchu", "Hogs of War", "Kula World", "Medievil", "Rollcage", "Persona"........................yeah, i could sit here all day.

Ok, I feel like dropping 5 PSX titles that I haven't seen on the show to have a nose at if you want. Not in any order really. 1. SHOOTER : X2 (not the pc game!) - Team 17/Ocean/Capcom. Horizontal/vertical shooter, good music and mech bosses with great designs which uses good parallax, sprite scaling and rotation etc (don't play on ps2 as you'll get graphical glitches and menu problems). 2. RPG: Original Wild Arms! - Media vision/Sony. Why does no one talk about the original! It's one of my favorite RPG's ever. Fantastic intro/music and story especially. 3. FIGHTER: Gekido - Naps team/Infogrammes. Unusual 4 player sidescrolling beat 'em up with weapons, loads of bosses and unlockables. No one ever talks about this either. 4. SIDESCROLLING ACTION: CT Special forces - LSP/Manfred Trenz. Great Metal Slug-a-like from the creator of Turrican with fantastic music and very varied levels. 5. JUST FOR FUN: Mickeys Wild Adventure - Disney. An updated version of Mickey mania on the Genesis with CD audio and updated level designs. I've never heard anyone discuss the differences between them. They're both great! If only 1 person finds any of these new to them, then my job is done.

I think the many 20$ greatest hits games where the main reason this outsold Saturn back in high-school when this came out I was big into games and u couldn't of told me this would beat Saturn, at 14 with my 1st paycheck ever I bought final fantasy 7 for Playstation.

I read in video game mags that the sega satern was being dropped because of sales and lack of game recognition.. So I sold mine before others found out its being discontinued and got good money for my system and 5 or 6 games and turned around and got a P.S. because all the games I wanted to play and franchises I was familiar with were all on sony and Sony was gonna go strong for 2 or 3 more years.. helped keep my money moving so I didn't get stuck with d/c 'ed console and loose alot of value...

This is the system that finally pulled me away from Nintendo. I was a hardcore Nintendo fan but when I found out that the Nintendo was sticking with cartridges as opposed to CD's I figured I'd give Sony a try. Strange logic, I know but to a teenager in the 90's it seemed like Sony was more cutting edge. It's a tie between ps1 and the snes as my all time favorite. What's interesting is that I probably would have ended up liking the Saturn more since it played fighting games better. By the time I found out about the Saturn, it was already over for them.

The first PlayStation was an amazing console, as was the PS2. I feel like things started going downhill with the PS3, despite it having some great titles. Sure would be great if Sony's next console featured backwards compatibility for all previous consoles, with the capability to play the entire back catalogue from the original discs or to buy digitally from the store. I also wish Sega would release another official console that allows us to play all the old cartridges or buy them digitally from an official store.

If the technology of the hardware is going to become more advanced and move forward the console can't be backwards compatible with dated hardware. To be backwards compatible with the PS1 or PS2 would be holding back the advancement of the technology in the new console.

One of my favorite games that was lesser known was Mass Destruction. A top down tank shooter. Kinda' like the Strike games but in a tank instead of an Apache attack helicopter. Which reminds me that Soviet Strike was my first game to own on the system. If it weren't for high school my memories of that period in life would be pretty awesome.

The best there was. The best there ever will be. I bought a playstation with the money I earned through my paper route. The only annoying thing was getting corrupted memory cards. Oh boy. I figured out that leaving the cards in the system was the main culprit to the corruption.
@GameSack10 жыл бұрын
Were they 3rd party cards or official Sony cards? I've had two Sony cards since the beginning and they still work great! I always leave them in the system.
@MrBlaarghh10 жыл бұрын
Game Sack I used both third party and official cards with the same results. I had more problems with the PSone slim console. I deduced it was from moving the consoles with the cards still inserted in them (my parents made me pack up the playstation after I was done with it each time). Nothing like getting 40 hours into an RPG and having your game save corrupted along with every other game save. I used to remove cards like a surgeon and place them back in their case after use. I took no risks!

I just plugged in my old beast of a Playstation a few days ago and played the first Medal of Honor again. Boy, it still was fun as it was in its prime. The graphics are always blocky as it was, but its great because it ahows how far we've come since then. Im a person though who doesn't mind, as long as the story and gameplay is great. :) I was able to buy a PS1 for my 6 yr old for 5 bucks including a controller. So now I suggest would be a good time to get a ps1 if you want a nostalgia trip. :)
