Before the NHL Hockey series from Electron Arts dominated the Sega Genesis and hockey video game world at large there was Mario Lemieux Hockey, which is like Sega's unsuccessful answer to Konami's Blades of Steel. Mario Lemieux Hockey for the Sega Genesis has numerous teams from real world cities but no NHL teams. Don't count on the Penguins, Blackhawks or Flames... they won't help you. THis game was awesome! Best hockey game ever. I played this all the time. Brings back memories. NHL hockey was nothing compared to this. A 1991 hockey game that owned.

I bought my copy of Mario Lemieux Hockey for the real Hockey puck that came along with it. It's still one of the coolest extras I've seen in game. It sure blows away the lame DLC they give you now when you pre-order a game.

We never had a Genesis growing up. The first time I played this was at a Sega promotional event outside of Six Flags. Sega set up a temporary pavilion where they had a bunch of kiosks that housed Genesis consoles. Each kiosk had a different game that you could play. I played Mario Lemieux Hockey for probably an hour straight that day.

I loved this game (and still do). It was like 16 bit version of Superstar Ice Hockey (C64). Only "problems" I had with it was the lack of co-op and the lack license and individual stats that EA's games had. I liked how it allowed you to use just one player on the ice and let the CPU handle the rest of your teammates (like in Faceoff!). It had some interesting "fake" names here and there, like "Curri" (Kurri) in Edmonton and Skriko in Vancouver.

I had no idea who Mario Lemiuex was. I assumed this game had to do with our friend the italian-american plumber. I couldn't figure out what the word Lemieux meant though. Guessed it was some league or something :P
